Acer knows how to make good, solid, reliable Chromebooks, and this model is no exception. Performance was always decent, the screen size is a welcome addition, and the long battery life makes it a great option for travelling. It’s just a shame that the display panel doesn’t quite match up to that of the Toshiba Chromebook 2, which is similarly priced but does offer a richer experience. If you can accept the screen though, the Acer Chromebook 13 is a very nice machine that will get the job done.

In a market that is getting more and more cluttered by the day, Acer’s Chromebook 13 is a solid device with great performance that will suit the needs of most mobile users, provided the Chrome OS is to their liking or meets their needs.

But should it be on every shopper's short list? Frankly, we opened the box expecting the Acer Chromebook 13—with its big 1080p screen and cutting-edge CPU/GPU—to set a new standard for affordable Chromebooks, and we're a little disappointed that it didn't. It's a solid contender, one we enjoyed keeping in our briefcase for days and using for hours at a time, but it loses points for its pale display and merely adequate benchmark performance.

So should you buy it? If you're set on a 13-in. Chromebook, the choice basically comes down to this or the $300 first-gen Toshiba Chromebook. The Haswell-based Toshiba has superior performance but worse build quality and a lower resolution (though similar in quality) display. Ultimately, each system has its own strengths and weaknesses; which is better is really just a question of which qualities matter more to you.

The Acer Chromebook 13 is the first Nvidia-powered Chrome OS device we've seen, but it won't be the last. HP and others have similar designs coming soon, and with the growth of popularity in Chromebooks overall, there's a chance this won't always be an Intel-dominated category.

Nvidia is looking to challenge Intel in the Chromebook market, and it's off to a solid start with the Acer Chromebook 13. While not as powerful as Core i3-powered Chromebooks, this $300 laptop benefits from a sharp 1080p display, a comfy keyboard and enough endurance to last the day. It's also wrapped in an attractive -- if smudge-prone -- chassis. That's a real bargain.

The Acer Chromebook 13 FHD is the finest Chromebook on the market today in its price range. The 720p "HD" version will cost you $279 while the 1080p "FHD" version we have here will run you a cool $299 USD. That’s certainly not half bad.

Is the Acer Chromebook 13 the best Chromebook on the market? That's a tough one. I can't claim to have tried them all, but I'll admit I was impressed. So is the 1920 x 1080 version the model to get? For my eyes, the extra pixels make the menu and tab text too small on a 13-inch display. Still, the extra 16GB of storage might come in handy but having a full-depth SD card slot will plug the gap for most people. Also, I didn’t notice any extra benefit from the additional 2GB of RAM, but I suppose it adds a level of future-proofing if you're likely to hang on to it or pass it on.

The Acer Chromebook 13 (CB5-311-T9B0) is definitely notable among its peers, if only for its new processor and larger full HD display, but it doesn't offer a significantly improved experience, and the experience is everything when dealing with Chromebooks. The new CPU may promise better gaming support, but there's not much out there now that takes advantage of it, and the laggy media performance didn't leave us too thrilled. The smaller Acer Chromebook C720P-2600 remains our Editors' Choice, due to its smoother performance and touch screen, but if you want a larger Chromebook with a nice display, the Chromebook 13 is a pretty good bet.

While it bumped up the cost a bit originally, Acer's decision to switch from Intel's Celeron line of processors to an Nvidia Tegra CPU – the first of its kind in a Chromebook – proved to be a sound one. Thanks to the chip's efficient architecture, the Chromebook 13 lasts almost nine hours on a charge. Furthermore, the laptop's excellent keyboard, reliable touchpad and lightweight design make it an excellent productivity tool.

Even without the ability to run Android apps, Acer's Chromebook R 13 would be one of the nicer models available. Workers will appreciate its comfy keyboard and long battery life, not to mention its flexible 2-in-1 design.

The Acer Chromebook R 13 is an excellent example of a solid, mid-level system. It's got a very good display, great battery life, a comfortable keyboard, and (because it has 4GB of RAM) enough power to run a video or a reasonable number of tabs without pausing for breath. Not to mention its touch screen, moveable display and ability to use Android apps. If you're shopping for a Chromebook, this would definitely be one to consider.

Would you be happy with your purchase if you bought one? I can confidently say yes to that. The R13 is a beautiful, well-built machine for a very good price. The overall look is way beyond its pricetag and its performance is plenty for most users. A great screen, keyboard and trackpad round out a very solid offering from Acer. I suspect as Android shows up soon on this device, it will be another top seller in Acer’s growing catalog of Chromebooks.

The few negatives aren't really negative. The display could be better, but it's fine the way it is and I have no real complaints outside of the glossy surface. I'd love to have the same keyboard and trackpad experience on the R13 that the Chromebook Pixel gives me, but I wouldn't expect it at this price.

The Acer Chromebook R 13 is a very good piece of hardware for the price, and the combination of Android emulation and a long-lasting battery makes this convertible a seriously compelling option. Productivity users or heavy multitaskers should consider a Chromebook with a more powerful processor, such as the Lenovo ThinkPad 13 Chromebook or the Dell Chromebook 13. However, if you want a convertible Chromebook for a great price, the Chromebook R 13 is your best choice.

Acer’s Chromebook 13 is a beautiful device. It lacks the 360-degree hinge and included pen of the $900 “Spin” version, but that’s okay. Professionals may not need the versatility of a 2-in-1 device, making this clamshell version a perfect fit.
