Acer’s latest stab at the Chromebook game is a bit of a mixed bag. Its metal-clad chassis is excellent, the keyboard is great, and for a sub £200 device, you’re getting superb build quality. The display, however, is a big let-down, as is the lack of SD card slot and limited internal storage allocation.

Finally, the 14 for Work not only has to compete with other Chromebooks, but all portable enterprise devices as well– and there are plenty of equally priced Windows laptops on the market with 1,080p screens and Core i5 processors (and loads of internal storage). In this sea of already-trusted options, a newcomer like the Acer Chromebook 14 for Work may struggle to find a home.

The Acer Chromebook 14 has a 14-inch 1080p HD IPS screen, premium-feeling aluminum construction, a quad-core processor, better-than-average system memory and storage, good connectivity, and a sweet $300 price tag to top it off. Its only drawbacks are a lack of SD card expansion and a slightly stiff keyboard. We think this chromebook is close to the ideal for the category, and a viable alternative to a "traditional" Windows or Mac laptop with a $500 or higher price tag.

The Acer Chromebook 14 for Work is part of a new generation of Chromebooks. This isn't a low-end laptop aimed at budget shoppers, nor is it Google's Chromebook Pixel, which originally sold for $1,299 and was designed for people who work in the cloud and want hardware as good as anything Apple produces.

Acer’s Chromebook 14 is about look and feel. The aluminum shell and high-resolution display do a lot to separate it from its lower-cost cousins and give you a better experience. You’re already paying a little more just for those two perks. It’d cost you even more to get better performance and features, but for mainstream users, the Chromebook 14 represents a fairly sweet spot.

The Acer Chromebook 14 could be an unequivocal winner. It has the looks. It has rock solid build quality. It has a satisfactory screen, keyboard, and touchpad. But, intermittent video playback issues, even on the lightweight Chrome OS, holds this Chromebook back. And, that's really too bad, because Acer was so close to downright nailing it.

f you were burned by netbooks or are looking for an excellent second computing device, I’d recommend giving Chromebooks a chance – you may be just as pleasantly surprised as I was. With firmly planted roots, a waning PC market and support for Android apps on the horizon, the Chromebook’s future looks bright. Given its price, it’s hard to go wrong with the Acer Chromebook 14.

Design matters to a lot people when they go to buy a laptop including myself, even for an inexpensive Chromebook. The Acer Chromebook 14 certainly is a standout in the category. I really liked having the extra screen real estate, too. If you can live with not having the best performance for its less than $300 price, put it on your short list.

The $749.99 Acer Chromebook 14 for Work sports some top-of-the-line components, a sexy design that is protected against falls, and IT administration tools that make it an actually viable productivity tool. But although you can get the design and tools for as little as $349, you will have to pay more for the high-end components.

Availability in the UK hasn’t yet been announced, but based on the US price of $249, the Chromebook 14 will cost somewhere in the region of £220 in the UK for the base, non-Full-HD model. Its chances? Pretty good, I’d say. Build quality is solid and if the Full HD screen makes it to the UK, the Chromebook 14 will be one of the best budget Chromebooks out there.

However, users can’t install popular third-party software from Microsoft, Adobe, Apple and others. If you can’t run it in the Chrome browser on a Mac or Windows computer, then it won’t run on a Chromebook. That’s about to change. If you’re reading this after Fall 2016, then you probably can now install Android apps on a Chromebook. This will open ChromeOS to a whole new world of excellent productivity, gaming and entertainment apps. Until that happens, ChromeOS has a narrow appeal to people who can live inside their browser 100% of the time.

The Acer Chromebook 14 for Work is a Chromebook and some people won’t enjoy using the OS. ChromeOS fans like knowing they aren’t vulnerable to viruses like Windows and even Macs suffer today. The OS is also a simple environment. If a user starts to notice strange behavior, they can quickly erase the computer and start fresh in under 10-15 minutes with all their apps and shortcuts back in place. That can take hours to days on a Windows or Mac computer.

We have some serious issues with the screen, and it's never going to win any prizes for its speed, but we're willing to overlook these based on its exceptionally low price. For just under £200 all-in, you've got a serviceable (if not stunning) everyday machine, which makes it excellent value. If you need to refresh your laptop on a budget, you could do an awful lot worse.

There's a lot to like about the Acer, including it's smart design, larger screen size, and impressively long battery life. These are offset by a few less than desirable components. The display is adequate at best, the keyboard is also average, and performance feels hampered by the low memory allocation. It's a solid machine, but the compromises may be too much for some.

Acer mostly succeeded with the Chromebook 14. It’s slim, light, and affordable. What’s not to love? Even the design makes you question if there’s some type of catch. The aluminum allow body is stunning and luxurious. You’re getting a surprising deal at $299 as that price generally gets you to a plastic body with a recycled design. But, for as much as we can applaud Acer’s Chromebook 14 for its design, we have to point out the display’s shortcomings. If the screen you look at for hours at a time is very important to you, you’ll need to continue shopping. However, it’s not an awful display. You just expect something better for the price.

So many people moan about Windows continual upgrades, with a Chromebook they still occur but in the background. So do you really need Windows, the answer lies in what do you use your PC for, if you use Windows programs then the answer is yes. However if you use it for Browsing, sending and receiving emails writing books or using spreadsheets possibly not as a Chromebook can do all that and now it even supports the Google Play store.

Acer’s Chromebook 314 is one of the best budget laptops out there thanks to its attractive price, good build quality and port selection, and exemplary battery life. The biggest weak point here is undoubtedly the screen, with the low resolution and flat colours falling way short of laptops with Full HD IPS displays. And while performance is decent for the price, it does mean you’re restricted to basic tasks. But with all that being said, you’re unlikely to find a better laptop for the price. If you want a machine with a Full HD IPS panel, the functionality of Windows and more powerful hardware, you’ll be required to pay a significant premium over the 314’s price.

The Acer Chromebook 314 is a return to the principles that made Chromebooks so appealing to many people when they first arrived.
