Chromebooks are still a niche device that can be very interesting due to their lightweight, unpretentious, and easy-to-use operating system. But this lightness comes at the cost of certain limitations that may be critical for some. First of all, because of the lack of some professional software. Chromebooks offer basic functionality. Speaking directly about the Acer Chromebook Plus 514 (CB514-3HT), it has a 14-inch 1920×1200 IPS touchscreen, can work almost full-time without an outlet, has a comfortable backlit keyboard, and is generally pleasant to use.

The Acer Chromebook Plus 514 isn’t the definitive Chromebook to go out and buy tomorrow, but then again, that isn’t the point of a £399.99/$399.99 device. It is instead a laptop designed to offer what most people need for a price that most people would be happy to pay, and while it may not excel in any one area, it remains a respectable all-rounder choice. The quad-core Ryzen 3 7320C processor powers it to decent benchmark results and nippy real-world performance for the productivity tasks this laptop is designed for. What’s more, it’s a good-looking laptop with a sleek silver plastic chassis, while it also offers a plentiful port selection for a laptop at this price. The battery life on offer here is decent for a Chromebook, although we have seen better results with the likes of the Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 and the touchscreen Acer Chromebook Spin 514.

But let’s face it: you won’t be too mad with any Chromebook Plus purchase at this point. And that’s the point, right? I can’t say the 514 does anything exceptionally better than the competition, so it really comes down to what’s available at the time of purchase, what the prices are, and where you shop. Being available only at Costco clearly makes this one a bit less popular, but as I’ve said with all these Chromebook Plus models; if you pick one up, I think you’ll like it.

The Acer Chromebook Spin 714 is arguably the best Chromebook most of us should buy right now, thanks to its slimline body, practical 2-in-1 design, high-performance spec, and excellent 16:10 screen. But what if your Chromebook budget doesn't stretch to the £699 required per device? Enter the Acer Chromebook Plus 514. One of the first wave of premium Chromebooks bearing Google's new Plus designation, it gives you a screen of the same size with the same resolution, good working ergonomics, and a capable spec based on AMD's new Ryzen 3 7320C CPU, all for less than two-thirds of what you'd need to spend for the Spin 714. You'll have to abandon any hope of a sleek metallic chassis and a super-bright display, but if you're trying to cut your IT costs, you need to make some sacrifices somewhere. With the Acer Chromebook Plus 514, you're making them in mostly the right places.

A solid, decent performer, with the Chromebook Plus label attached that ensures a certain level of quality. While it can't match the premium-level Chromebooks out there, the Acer Chromebook Plus 514 offers great value for money for office work and student use.

Chromebooks have a reputation as low-power devices tied to online services, and to an extent that’s still true, in that you’ll get the best from one if you sign into Google’s cloud offerings and use web apps. However, the new range of Chromebook Plus machines offers more, including Android compatibility and AI in the form of the Gemini chatbot, and Acer’s Chromebook Plus 514 brings all this in a chunky plastic shell with a keyboard that’s great to use and isn’t going to goad you into typing ripe language. Overall, it’s a successful budget laptop, but not one that’s going to appeal to power users.

The Acer Chromebook Plus 514 straddles the line between ultra-budget models (there are still a few with, shudder, 1,366-by-768 screens) and more premium Chromebooks, offering the latest AI enhancements but cutting back on the niceties in the name of savings. This Costco model provides impressive battery life and plenty of storage, making it a capable platform for Google's latest Gemini AI tools. However, it's held back by tepid performance, consistently trailing in productivity benchmarks. While it presents a fine bargain for a low-cost machine, it doesn't reach the heights of the best Chromebooks we've seen, like the Editors' Choice-award-winning Asus Chromebook Plus CX34. For those prioritizing affordability and new features, it's worth a trip to Costco, but power users will want to look elsewhere.

Now we come to the internals, and things get very interesting. The processor is the very capable Intel Core i3-N305 that gets a decent 8-10 hours of battery life and is paired with 8GB of RAM and a whopping 512GB of SSD storage. Yes…for $249 you are getting a capable Chromebook with a half a Terabyte of storage! And though I have no use for this amount of space on my Chromebook, I’m always happy to have it. And that surprising inclusion along with the solid keyboard and screen highlight what is so great about this device. Acer has delivered the core things you need to in order to build a great Chromebook experience and they’ve done it on a wildly-low budget while throwing in a few unexpected upgrades along the way.

Acer’s Chromebook Plus 514 is a solid entry-level Chromebook that manages to avoid most, though not all, of the problems that typically come with a sub-$500 laptop. It has a good keyboard, plenty of RAM, far more than enough storage, and a mix of USB-C and USB-A connectivity. On the downside, the display is dim, the touchpad is too small, and processor performance is so-so. Still, shoppers looking for a budget Chromebook could do much worse, and the Chromebook Plus 514 offers a lot of bang for the buck.

Just about all the Acer Chromebooks -- from basic to premium -- I've tested over the years are recommendable, and the Acer Chromebook Plus 514 (CB514-4H/T) is no different. It meets all the requirements to be stamped as a Chromebook Plus model, and it delivers good performance and even better battery life. It has a respectably bright display with a matte finish to limit glare. And it has more storage than you'd typically find at its $350 starting price. It's a simple, sturdy Chromebook for school, work or home. And, once again, it's easy to recommend.
