Reviews for the Acer Iconia A1-810
The new tablet icon? Acer's Iconia A1-810 is a 7.9-inch Android tablet with "Uncompromising Performance and Extreme Mobility" – at least according to the manufacturer. We will check if this is true in our review.

It is 20x14x1cm and weights 372grams. The screen surrounds are creamy grey and the back is silver. A not so small Android Tablet that is advertised as useable in one hand. Certainly for those with smaller hands this maybe a slight problem. It is however a near 8inch screen and means normal web pages display without any problems.

Acer's attempt at a low cost Android tablet does a decent job but falls short due to the highly competitive market. It does cost less than $200, offers a decently lag free experience and features an HDMI connector and MicroSD slot most of its competitors do not. The problem is that the tablet it bigger, heavier and features a display that feels like a first generation tablet when compared to those released in the past couple of months.

We got our hands on Acer’s 7.9-inch Iconia A1 recently and were quietly impressed with a budget tablet that appeared to be punching above its weight yet keeping its feet on the canvas. Useful budget device that, while not as good as the more expensive iPad mini, punches above its weight impressively.

The price might look attractive initially, but the Iconia A1 is a damp squib. Its screen is grainy and dim; it isn’t the smoothest or slickest tablet; the battery life is average; and we’re not sold on the physical design. Ultimately, you’re better off opting for a smaller-screened device.

Overall we are pretty impressed with what the Acer Iconia A1-810 has to offer. Let’s be clear, this tablet is designed to offer great value for money and isn’t comparable to a lot of tablets on the market such as the iPad Mini in terms of specification because it’s around £100 cheaper. The main selling point of the Acer Iconia A1-810 is it’s price. At around £160 from Pixmania for the 16 GB version, we feel it offers excellent value for money as there isn’t much competition at this price point without compromising with 8 GB of capacity or a dated version of Android (or both). The RRP of the 8 GB version of the tablet is £150, but we couldn’t find it available for sale at the time of writing. At this price, we would be inclined to opt for the 16 GB anyway as a £10 premium for double the memory capacity is great value.

It may look like one, but the Acer A1 is no iPad Mini. For a lot of folk, though, that in itself is a benefit. Android buffs seeking an eight-inch tablet have few other choices than the A1, and the iPad Mini is obviously not among them. And, it has to be said, the Acer offers much better expansion and connectivity than the Apple product. It’s clearly less expensive to manufacture than the Mini, but then it costs a whole lot less too.
