8-inches of metal. You're looking for an affordable tablet that is compact and stylish? Then you should look at Acer's Iconia A1-830 that wants to convince with a metal back and Intel Atom processor for a price of 170 Euros (~$233).

Like the Iconia A1 before it, the Acer Iconia A1-830’s price is good. However, unlike its predecessor, the A1-830 delivers passable performance and screen quality, plus a more solid build. In the overall scheme of things, the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HDX 7in are better-quality devices, with superior displays, quicker performance and longer battery life.

At a price of $249, it’s hard to see the A1 830 as good value, even if it does compete on price quite well with Apple’s own iPad Mini, which Acer is drawing heavy inspiration of. The problem is there are better options for a little bit more out there, and if you had to pick, we’d probably tell you to shell out that little extra or wait for this to drop even more before considering pulling out that wallet.

The Iconia improves on older Acer tablets with better build quality, and it's got enough power under the hood to handle day-to-day Android usage. The screen isn't good, though, and the lack of the latest Android software means this device misses out on a long list of features. The £140 price is tempting, though, and the Iconia is good enough to use on a daily basis - something we couldn't say about most budget Android tablets.

Like the Iconia A1 before it, the Acer Iconia A1-830’s price is highly attractive. However, unlike its predecessor, the A1-830 boasts passable performance and screen quality, plus marginally better build quality. In the overall scheme of things, the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HDX 7in are better quality all-round, with superior displays, quicker performance and longer battery life, but at a lower £138, this tablet has some budget appeal.

For $180, the Acer Iconia A1 is a solid Android tablet that could be good for kids or as your first budget tablet, but there are more options that can give you more bang for your buck in either price or features. The Nexus 7, Kindle Fire HDX, Tegra Note, and the Galaxy Tab 3 7-inch can be yours for just a few more greenbacks, so the A1 certainly isn’t an affordable tablet in a desolate space. Possibly the most interesting part of the Acer Iconia A1 is the fact that it ships with an Intel processor, but that’s just a curiosity that won’t impress those who are actually going to buy it.

For $179, the Iconia A1-830 is an affordable tablet that offers a fairly big screen for a low price. We also like the metal back, which gives this slate a sturdier feel than some other low-cost slates. Unfortunately, the somewhat dim screen and below-average battery life may give some pause.

Acer has really come out swinging with this device. Not unlike what Motorola did with the Moto G, here Acer creates a tablet that looks great and works great at its price point. At $180 USD, this device is ready to take on the rest of the market at that point without a doubt.

People expecting the Acer Iconia A1-830 to be a cheap iPad mini will likely be disappointed. It looks like an iPad mini, but the Android OS means it's nothing like an Apple tablet. It's also not particularly remarkable in terms of the specs it offers, thanks to a low-resolution screen and middleweight processor. However, it looks and feels pretty good for the price.
