Tempting. New case, new name and new components: Alienware risks a lot to offer the best gaming notebooks in 2013. The integrated features won't be easy to beat for the competition. Despite its 14-inch form factor the notebook can be equipped with a high resolution anti-reflective display and a GeForce GTX 765M. A well balanced package or just an overpriced beauty?

Dell sticks with their design from the past few years with their redesigned Alienware 14 laptop but the internals have all been updated to give it a solid gaming experience at a reasonable price tag. Features such as the keyboard and the custom lighting are well appreciated by users but it could use with some improvements to make it even better.

The world of gaming laptops is hugely competitive, so Dell’s designers should be commended for making the Alienware 14 stand out: its matte metal chassis looks and feels fantastic, and the lights across its surfaces look good without becoming garish. It’s also fast, with plenty of potential to be made faster, at least on the CPU and storage front.

Alienware's designers have done a great job tempering the excesses of traditional gaming laptops with good looks and matte aluminium, and the Alienware 14 doesn't just look great – it shifts, too. The quad-core processors puts paid to applications, and the GTX 765M graphics core handles modern games at high settings. It's not thin, light or quiet, but it's a more portable proposition than most of its 17in rivals.

In short, unless you really love the design and marginally better portability of the Alienwar 14, we favour the Asus G750JX as our gaming laptop of choice. The Alienware 14 is certainly not without its charms, and we don’t think any buyer would be disappointed in its performance, but only if money is no object. Great performance and distinct style, but the price is just too steep compared to its rivals for us to give a whole-hearted endorsement.

Surprise: Dell's legacy as an OEM and Alienware's gaming cred still make for an awesome combination -- both the Alienware 14 and 17 rank among the best gaming laptops we've reviewed this year. Excellent build quality, killer components and excellent performance have left us with little to complain about.

The Alienware 14 is a noticeable upgrade over its predecessors; it's a well-rounded notebook with very few cons. This notebook's highlights include outstanding performance thanks to its Intel quad-core processor and Nvidia graphics; a well-executed design and AlienFX customizable lighting system; excellent 1080p IPS display; superb build quality and chassis strength; good speakers; a plentiful port selection; a tolerable level of noise and respectable if not outstanding battery life. The mild cons list includes a thicker than expected chassis at 1.6", 6.1 pound weight and pricey options (starting $1,099, but our optioned-out review unit was $1,949 without an extended warranty).

Some laptops have loud fans that kick in when performing high-end tasks that drive the CPU or GPU. Dell has revamped its gaming line, including the new Alienware 14. The design changes don't go nearly far enough, but no complaints about the performance.

Alienware has made improvements to the look of the chassis compared to its previous 14in gaming machine, the M14x, giving the Alienware 14 a thicker, 'floating' design that's adorned with a comprehensive lighting system. The Alienware 14 supplies plenty of speed in a relatively small frame. It's mainly aimed at gamers, but even professionals who want a fast laptop should consider it.
