Reviews for the Alienware 15
Galactic? A bit late, but Alienware now also upgrades its premium laptops with the GeForce 900M line. As one of the first editorial offices, we had the opportunity to test the 15-inch model and the graphics amplifier. These are our impressions.

Alienware is the Kleenex of gaming PCs: no it's not for wiping your nose, we mean it's a brand that stands for the entire category. "I want an Alienware" is synonymous with I want a gaming PC. It began as a boutique brand with killer specs and crazy looks, and in the many years since Dell bought Alienware, they've brought a scale of manufacturing and marketing that's made it a (for this sort of computer) volume leader.

The Alienware 51 gets points for style. The exterior lighting is appropriate bling for a gaming laptop and the customization options ensure that you’re not locked into a color you don’t want. Heck, you can even disable the lighting if you want the laptop’s reserved, but classy design to speak for itself.

Alienware hasn’t been the best about pricing competitively over the last few years, but this specific build of the Alienware 15 lines up pretty well with what you get from other manufacturers. The GPU is what gives it value — other systems with a GTX 970M run more towards the $1,750 to $2,000 range, though a lot of those systems include an Intel quad.

The Alienware 15 is the “Goldilocks” of the Alienware family of notebooks; if the Alienware 13 is too small and the Alienware 17 is too big and too expensive, this one is “just right.” Not only do customers have a wide range of CPU and GPU options to choose from, but customers can buy a low-cost configuration to start and upgrade the graphics later thanks to the Alienware Graphics Amplifier.

While our midrange Alienware 15 doesn't quite match the gaming performance of the 2015 Razer Blade or the Aorus X3 Plus V3, it's significantly more affordable. The optional Graphics Amp also means you can get performance unmatched by any laptop GPU, and at a total price of $2,300, it costs about the same as the Razer or the Aorus.

All in all, with its relatively long battery life, solid construction, and attractive IPS display, there's a lot to like about the Alienware 15, especially if you value the complex, customizable lighting scheme. The system also proved quite quiet compared to other gaming laptops we've used lately.

The Alienware 15 is an excellent machine obviously. Very good thermals with no throttling, very good keyboard, good 1080p IPS, slick looks, many features, low noise and very good performance. The AW15 basic version, although with an I5-4210H will be faster than GTX 960M machines by around 20-30%, so if you can get one for $1000-$1050 it’s a good option.

Spec-wise, this machine has a powerful GPU with overall good performance, but the CPU can’t keep up with most of its competitors. For the price of around €1600 you can easily snatch a notebook with quad-core Core i7 CPU, but you might be disappointed with the GPU performance. So the question here is: Are you willing to trade the CPU for a more capable GPU? IF the answer is yes – go for the Alienware 15. It’s a great notebook and gives you a room for improvement with the Alienware Graphics Amplifier and the CPU will still handle any modern game and it won’t affect your FPS much.

Alienware isn’t a brand that has historically been associated with value, but their recent line-up of gaming laptops have been priced quite fairly. Configurations loaded with a GTX 980M and 4K display start at $2,150, cheaper than similar 15” systems. The entry-level systems are also decent value compared to laptops with similar hardware, starting at $1,200 for a GTX 965M and 1080p display.

The Alienware 15 is a very accomplished premium gaming laptop. It combines a stylish and well build chassis with a great selection of features for a pretty reasonable price. Performance wise it’s a powerhouse and exactly what you’d expect for the price, plus Alienware offers a decent selection of configuration options to get the right price/performance balance for your needs. It has also provided easy access to the key upgradable components so doing your upgrades later on is an easy option.
