Reviews for the Alienware x14 i7 RTX 3060

For those of you looking for the most portable gaming laptops, the 14” category is it, and this year Alienware entered the game with their X14. It’s a premium aluminum and magnesium gaming laptop and it’s currently the thinnest gaming laptop on the market. For those looking for horsepower over battery life, it has Intel 12th gen H series processors and GPUs up to our RTX 3060. It has a bright wide gamut 144Hz display, the usual X series advanced cooling and Thunderbolt 4. It’s been out a few months but is often discounted now, making it a temping deal in the arena vs the Razer Blade 14, Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 and Acer Predator Triton 300 SE 14” gaming laptops.

The x14 is the slimmest 14in gaming laptop on the planet, and it’s one of the lightest too. Combine that with its solid mainstream performance, Alienware’s impressive build quality, a great keyboard and sharp screen, and you’ve got the ideal partner for compact gaming. At this size, though, you’ll have to accept compromises. The speakers disappoint, and the pricier Razer Blade 14 has better battery life and quieter operation. If you’ve got a hefty bank account, that laptop is also available with faster components. You shouldn’t really tick every box in a tiny gaming laptop, though, and the Alienware gets the key stuff right thanks to solid quality and performance in almost every important area.

Review of the Alienware X14 with an I7-12700H and a RTX 3060. It's a beautiful laptop with so much potential but a few little quirks make me a bit uneasy. Watch for the full review!

The Alienware’s x14 is the world’s thinnest 14-inch gaming laptop. This is a blessing and a curse. Though portable and sleek, the x14 can’t brush aside the fundamental physics problem of a laptop this small. It’s loud, runs hot, and performs no better than a budget gaming laptop with a 15-inch display and RTX 3060 GPU. Still, the x14 is an admirable performer given its size and specifications. On paper the x14 should be blown away by alternatives with more powerful GPUs, like the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 and Razer Blade 14, but real-world results place the Alienware close to its competition. The x14 is also properly priced, with the base model undercutting the Razer Blade 14 by $500. It all comes down to this: do you need a thin 14-inch gaming laptop? If so, the Alienware x14 is a great choice, but if not, go for a 15-inch model.

The Alienware x14 is the world’s slimmest gaming laptop, and it impresses elsewhere with good gaming performance, a fantastic processor and a great design, screen and keyboard. That said, more gaming grunt is available from other 14-inch machines, and the speakers and battery both struggle to perform.

Squeezing big-boy gaming performance into a compact laptop is always going to be a matter of managing compromises and, viewed from that perspective, the Alienware x14 does most things right. The display is top quality, while the looks and build quality are a match for the rest of the Alienware range. The combination of an Alder Lake Core i7 CPU and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 GPU strikes a very happy balance between performance, thermals and cost of ownership and the sound system isn’t bad, either, considering it’s stuffed inside a laptop that’s less than 15mm thick. The trouble is that, for similar money, Asus has a laptop – the ROG Zephyrus G14 (2022) – that’s just as good performance-wise, comes with more RAM and has better battery life. That makes it the best option in the compact Windows gaming laptop space, just ahead of the Alienware x14, although the difference is marginal.

The Alienware x14 is easily one of the most distinctive-looking gaming laptops of 2022. Its all-white ultra-thin chassis and dual-torque hinge set it apart from other devices. On the inside, it’s a more-than-competent portable gaming rig that delivers solid performance thanks to its RTX 30 series GPU and advanced cooling features. And though its $1,649 starting price isn’t exactly cheap, it’s more affordable than thicker gaming laptops like the Razer Blade 17 ($2,400) or Maingear Vector Pro ($1,999). My only gripe with the laptop is its lack of an OLED model. The FHD display is great, but it doesn’t present games at their very best. Because of this, you may want to opt for a rig like the 4K OLED-equipped Razer Blade 17 if you care deeply about display quality in your gaming laptops. But if you're all about gaming on the go and prize portability over power, the Alienware x14 is a great choice.

The x14 might not be quite as powerful as its bigger siblings, but given its even more portable dimensions, there's a lot to like. When compared to a $1,800 x14 with 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD and an RTX 3060, a similarly equipped x15 costs just $50 less. The main trade-offs being a little less thermal headroom, a more cramped keyboard and a slightly slower 144Hz screen (instead of 165Hz on the x15). That's not a lot to sacrifice for an even more travel-friendly thin-and-light design. However, if you don't need a new gaming laptop right now, the smart move would be to wait a month or two for some of Alienware's competitors to release updated systems for 2022. Both Razer and ASUS are coming out with refreshed versions of their 14-inch gaming laptops later this spring, and once those become available, we'll have a much better idea of how the x14 fares against its biggest rivals. But if you like the x14’s combination of style and sleekness, this is a slick gaming laptop that’s made to move.

The Alienware x14 is an excellent 14-inch gaming notebook, an all-around solid laptop, and the best effort within the X Series thus far. It retains the sleek look while matching or besting its competition on performance, avoiding the power dropoff we see in the x15 and x17. Going super-compact really adds value at this size, making for a genuinely road-ready gaming laptop. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 is also great, but it’s the Razer Blade 14 that really trades blows with Alienware’s machine. The Blade 14 features a more premium metal build; its RTX 3070 configuration is less expensive than what we reviewed here; and its display is more advanced at 1440p and 165Hz. The Blade 14 (and the G14) will be receiving AMD’s Ryzen 6000 processors early this year, too, so the current processor advantage isn’t intrinsic to the x14, and won’t hold forever. On the other hand, a smaller SSD would put the price advantage back to the x14; its ready-now Alder Lake CPU is blazing fast; and its RTX 3060 stacks up to the Blade’s RTX 3070.

Thin and light gaming laptops like the Alienware X14 are becoming more common as mobile PC components become more power efficient and PC makers get better at designing cooling systems that don't take up as much space. We've already seen a few laptops try to pack high power and light weight in a single chassis, but now Alienware is throwing its legendary hat - and design into the ring. And, it ends up with one of the thinnest and lighting gaming laptops we've ever used. This laptop is just 0.57 inches thick and weighs just under 4lb, making it easy to carry in your backpack. But it doesn't sacrifice power to fit in that chassis. The model we reviewed comes with an Intel Core i7-12700H, 32GB of RAM and an RTX 3060. That's not the most powerful hardware on the market, but its more than what you'll find in most laptops this size. But with that high power in such a portable chassis, you're going to have to pay.

And that’s where Intel-based laptops have seemingly plateaued, as opposed to AMD’s past couple of CPU generations, which have shown vast improvements in efficiency. With Microsoft Edge running over a dozen tabs that I need for work, the X14 lasted just over four and a half hours. That’s a couple of hours less than what I was expecting, especially since Alienware brags that its 80Wh battery is the largest capacity ever put into a 14-inch gaming laptop. This merely acceptable battery life is not far from my experience with Alienware’s bigger 15-inch and 17-inch gaming laptops. I’m confident that the incoming wave of AMD-equipped models will improve on the results that we’ve seen so far with Alder Lake. Fortunately, the X14 conveniently charges via USB-C, and it comes with a compact 130W USB-C charger. What’s more, Alienware says that you can use any USB-C PD charger to charge the X14. But unless you’re using a relatively speedy one, the X14 may actively drain instead of charging.

Alienware's X14 has pushed the limits for how "thin and light" a Windows gaming laptop can be. The X14 is a sleek new laptop that's trying to push in the space recently dominated by the Razer Blade 14, and the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14.

The Alienware X14 is just a smaller version of a winning design from Alienware, so it looks promising. What’s really going to make or break this laptop is how well performance and thermals will scale with this chassis. We are also not huge fans of the extra bit on the back of the laptop that stops it from fitting in smaller bags, but we’re sure that’s a problem that will only apply to a minority of this laptop’s potential audience anyway. But from what it looks like, this is going to be an excellent gaming laptop for on-the-go use, and we can’t wait to carry it around for a while to see if Alienware’s vision has been executed.

The Alienware x14 looks like a great gaming laptop for those who want solid performance from a portable device. Though not exactly cheap at a starting price of $1,799, it is relatively affordable for a machine of its kind. We’re impressed by its slick design, crisp 14-inch display and the number of available configurations. 12th gen CPUs and RTX 30-series GPUs are what we expect to be the standard for 2022 laptops and it’s good that the Alienware x14 features both out of the box. Alienware’s exclusive suite of power-saving and performance-enhancing features should also make this laptop last long on charge. Based on what I’ve seen, the Alienware x14 has the potential to be one of the best gaming laptops of 2022. We’ll see if this is true once we spend more time with it.
