Reviews for the Alienware x16 R1

Our Alienware x16 R1 Review reveals that this model is a prime contender in the Best Gaming Laptops 2023 category. With its sleek design, it distinguishes itself in the competitive gaming laptop market, offering a harmonious blend of aesthetics and functionality. Its 16-inch QHD+ display delivers sharp visuals, while the speakers, albeit with room for improvement, provide a satisfactory auditory experience. The laptop’s performance is undeniably robust, driven by the Intel Core i9-13900HK processor and the Nvidia RTX 4080 GPU. However, while the GPU stands out, the CPU’s performance, when juxtaposed with some competitors, indicates a delicate equilibrium between design and capability. The varied port selection and the customizable lighting elements further amplify its allure. In essence, in this Alienware x16 R1 review we conclude that positions it as a formidable player in the Best Gaming Laptops 2023 arena, presenting a fusion of style, prowess, and features that cater to both gaming enthusiasts and creative professionals.

The Alienware x16 hits home runs in just about every category, being thin, solid, stylish and with a stellar QHD+ display that brings textured gaming environments to life in vivid realism. It also has a satisfyingly desktop-like mechanical keyboard. Despite running quite hot at times, the x16 outperforms a strong field of rival 16-inch contenders in GPU and CPU performance and produces impressive frame rates in AAA games. This makes it an extremely worthy proposition for gamers chasing the best performance in a 16-inch gaming laptop.

The 2023 Alienware x16 had the potential to become quite the beast of a gaming laptop but falls short in some areas that I’m surprised haven’t been addressed yet since it’s a prominent issue in a number of their laptops. If you’re willing to try undervolting this, it can be a lot more viable to use but as it is, it’s a bit tough given its starting price of RM11,999.

This particular review unit, priced at RM17,344, is a difficult pill to swallow. It has splendid hardware with top-notch performance that goes along with the gamer aesthetics. Just that coupled with some software bugs and the somehow lacklustre cooling capabilities, I start to question if Alienware developers actually care about the Command Centre or not. RM17,344 is a lot of money and those who are ready with this budget, want to get the best of everything possible. At the end of the day, this is still a high-end flagship-level gaming laptop that targets gamers. It is for those who are looking for a portable gaming machine that they can carry around easily compared to even a mini ITX system. The laptop itself can be customised with different CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and more on Dell’s website. That goes without saying, the final price tag is totally up to your decision whether if you pick all the high-end components or settle with something that suits your wallet’s taste.

The X16 is an undeniably slick gaming laptop. Alienware’s design team has done a fab job, delivering a machine that isn’t in-yer-face like a lot of rivals, but still find room inside for cutting-edge components and plenty of cooling. Connectivity isn’t compromised either, even if some might find it a bit cumbersome having all the ports at the rear. This isn’t the outright fastest RTX 4080 laptop around, and while not stupidly expensive, it carries the sort of price premium we’ve come to expect from anything Alienware. An Asus, MSI or Lenovo alternative will leave less of a dent in your wallet, despite packing similar hardware. Fan noise is also dramatic when gaming, and it doesn’t have the best display around. But those are the compromises you make if good looks are your top priority.

Every part of the Alienware x16 is top-notch: the stunning, clear, very bright and colorful 2560x1600 display, the cracking sound system, the RGB lighting, particularly the gorgeous RGB touchpad, and of course, the guts of the machine, the Nvidia RTX 4080 and the i9-13900HK. But it is very expensive, particularly considering some of its competitors use the more powerful i9 HX for their CPUs. Even so, if you have the money, you’ll find in the x16 a fantastic, very colorful laptop you can use for years to come.

The Alienware x16 R1 is the whole package, with high-end performance, premium features, and a design you can't ignore. From the metal chassis and 240Hz display to the mechanical keyboard and RGB everything, it's an easy win for the Alienware faithful, and among Dell's best releases. However, if you're willing to spend even more money—which, when you're already at three grand, is basically dollars and cents—you'll find even more capable gaming laptops in arguably more widely acceptable and helpful designs. To that end, you'll find some downsides, namely the awkward port placement and the noisy fans. Compared with the category-leading and Editors' Choice-award-holding Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 8, the Alienware x16 R1 is a worthy alternative, but it doesn't quite dethrone the Lenovo as our favorite 16-inch gaming laptop. It all comes down to price versus performance: The Lenovo simply brings better performance at a more palatable price.

The Alienware x16 features comparable performance to many of this year’s gaming laptops with 13th Gen Intel Core CPUs and RTX 40-series laptop GPUs. But it’s the X16’s slim profile and overall sleek design that distinguish it from the pack. If you want a gaming laptop that both looks great and runs phenomenally, this is an overall solid choice. However, I wish the display on the Alienware x16 was a bit brighter and more colorful, and it can run hot in spots when gaming. If the Alienware x16 isn’t to your liking, a similarly-specced Razer Blade 16 ($2,699) is an ideal alternative for those who want a stylish and powerful gaming laptop. The Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 ($2,899) is also a good choice even if it’s decidedly chunkier than the other two gaming laptops. Even if the Alienware x16 isn’t a revolutionary gaming laptop, it’s still worth considering due to its excellent gaming performance and killer design. If you can afford it, this is a laptop worth the splurge.

I sincerely hope Alienware iterates on this design in the future. The x16 needed a little more time to bake to reach its full potential, but the laptop we have today is still a solid starting point. Great performance, an excellent keyboard, and a relatively thin package make it stand out among desktop replacements, even if it doesn’t quite surpass a machine like the Zephyrus M16. Although this is a solid foundation, there are a fair few problems. The lack of the full 100W of USB-C power delivery vastly limits the laptop’s portability, and the screen, despite being good for gaming, needs a second pass for color accuracy and quality. It’s possible Alienware could address the screen, at least, with a software update, and maybe a minor mid-gen refresh could add proper USB-C power delivery. We’ll just have to wait and see.
