The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids gives parents of younger children all the tools they need to feel good about giving a tablet to their little ones. It comes wrapped in a large, kid-proof case and is backed by a two-year, no-questions-asked replacement warranty. Twelve free months of Amazon Kids+ gives you access to plenty of age-specific, child-friendly content. And the tablet itself has a large, relatively sharp screen, decent speakers, and enough power to do whatever children need it to. Out of all of the Amazon Kids tablets, the Fire HD 10 Kids strikes the best balance of the bunch, earning it our Editors' Choice award. The iPad has more third-party apps and a better display, but it costs nearly twice the price and isn't half as targeted toward children.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 has a good build, a solid screen, and just enough power to browse the web, play casual games, read, and stream videos. You can connect your favorite headphones via Bluetooth or the standard headphone jack and get through most bus, car, plane, or train rides thanks to the long-lasting battery. The biggest downside is Amazon’s limited app selection. Even so, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better tablet for $139.99. The $99.99 Fire HD 8 is more portable, but also more sluggish. The $229.99 Fire Max 11 is faster and has a sharper screen, but suffers from shorter battery life. That makes the 2023 edition of the Fire HD 10 the top model in Amazon's tablet lineup, as well as the best tablet we've tested under $150, earning it our Editors' Choice award.

Amazon's Fire HD 10 refresh for 2023 offers a decent upgrade over previous generations, with stylus support and a faster processor. It still features the crowd-pleasing 10.1-inch 1080p display, making it a solid choice for binge-watching on a budget. While it still comes with 3GB of RAM, Amazon claims its processor now offers 25% faster performance, making the Silk Browser less painful to use.

If you’re looking for a slate to use at work or for advanced creative tasks, then this won't be it because it’s simply not powerful enough and the operating system too closed. But if you want something simple and durable to stream TV shows and movies, read ebooks and control your smart home, then this ticks all of the boxes thanks to its decent-sized screen, sturdy build, and affordable price point. While it may be lacking in some areas, the Fire HD 10 is packed to the brim with handy features, like the option to add profiles for each family member including your children. Added to that is the fact that it can double-up as an Alexa smart display when you aren’t using it, with all of the perks of a device like the Amazon Echo Show. Generally speaking, the Amazon Fire HD 10 (2023) is a fantastic choice for those on the hunt for an affordable family-friendly tablet. It's not an upgrade-worthy tablet, but it's still a great tablet for all the basics it offers.

For the price, the latest Fire HD 10 offers incredible value, thanks to its large, sharp screen, punchy speakers, built-in Alexa smarts, and the ability to keep up with demanding games while offering a smooth user experience. Its only real downside is the lack of the Google Play Store, but as we’ve seen, that’s a quick and easy fix. Regardless of whether you want to take that extra step or not, there’s no escaping the sheer bang for buck on offer here, making this a solid contender for your Android tablet shortlist.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 (2023) may not inspire desire or excitement like an iPad might, but it’s still a damn fine deal. It packs in a sharp screen, solid build, epic battery life, and good-enough performance at a price that’s a fraction of many competitors. Granted, there are shortcomings and annoyances. Amazon’s app ecosystem is lacking compared to Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store, and the middling processing power means that high-end games are largely out of the question—if you can even find them on the Amazon Appstore. But as a go-anywhere device for streaming media, casually browsing the web, and keeping in touch with the world, the Amazon Fire HD still feels like a bargain with this latest revision. It’s a strong pick for the budget-conscious buyer.

We are now on the 13th generation of the Fire tablet line, more than a decade from the launch of the device family that has arguably done more than any other to define what budget tablets can be. The Fire 10 bears all the benefits of years of iterative design tweaks. It has a screen that is decent but never wows, loud dual speakers, a robust design, strong battery life, enough performance for most people and a selfie camera that allows for clear video calls. That it also comes at a price which can drop as low as £80 is the icing on the cake. There are a few strings attached of course – you’ll find ads on the lock screen, a profusion of Amazon services trying to sell themselves to you, a lack of easy access to Google’s apps and a restrictive base internal memory allocation. If you can live with all of the above, the Fire HD 10 is one of the best and most balanced budget tablets on the market today, and as such it earns our recommendation.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 is for anyone who reads a lot on Kindle and Audible, has a Prime subscription, and streams the occasional show on Prime Video. If you’re already invested in the Amazon ecosystem, you will appreciate having everything at your fingertips when you first power it on. However, at £150/$140 (with ads), this is only slightly cheaper than other budget Android tablets, which represent better value for money, largely because they’ll give you access to the Google Play app store, which offers more choice than its Amazon counterpart.

I still struggle to fully recommend Amazon tablets, as the software is so obnoxiously outdated that it effectively blocks off one of the main uses for a tablet. If there’s any chance you might want productivity features from your tablet, do yourself a favour and spend a little more on something like the Oppo Pad Air – it’s much more suited to work, has a better display and is currently only £179. If, however, you’ve no real need for access to Google Drive or the Chrome browser, the simple fact is that you’re not going to find a better tablet for this price. Performance gets a tidy little boost, battery life is still competitive and the display remains sufficient for most people. It’s not the flashiest tablet out there, but for casual streaming, light gaming or something to keep the kids quiet for a bit, the Amazon Fire HD 10 (2023) reigns supreme.

While iPads still seem to rule the tablet universe, when it comes to comparing the Fire HD 10 (2023) with any iPad model, it's all about the price. Qualitatively, the iPads will outshine Fire tablets in terms of their displays, cameras, sound, processing power, storage, and certainly app selection. However, the Fire HD 10 (2023) is passable to quite good in all of those categories, for a price of $139.99 for the 32GB model or $179.99 for the 64GB model (tack on another $15 each to banish the lock screen ads). Considering that a basic iPad starts at $329 for the older iPad (9th Generation) or $449 for last year's iPad (10th Generation), it boils down to what you really need to do with such a device.
