Despite some small drawbacks, you just won't find a tablet with these features and performance at this price.

The Fire HD 8 is one of the least compromised budget tablets out there – but that doesn’t mean there aren’t compromises to be made.

Amazon is doing really well in tablets as they don’t really need to make a profit on them. They view the tablet platform as an on-ramp to their other products and services like books, video, games, store items, apps, music, audiobooks, and magazines. This order of goods is exactly how their UI is laid out, too, which reinforces this position.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 is a “good enough” tablet at a great price, making it easy to recommend if £100 is your absolute maximum budget. Its screen is fair, the build quality is fine and there’s plenty of storage. While it doesn’t feel incredibly fast, it has enough power to do justice to some of Android’s most impressive games.

Like the 7in Amazon Fire tablet before it, the HD 8 does a great job of not being a frustrating, terrible experience for just £90. Is it fantastic? No. But it’s a tablet for £90 that isn’t terrible, which is an achievement in and of itself.

But Amazon's tablet wasn't designed for business use. The slate's biggest downside is its limited app library, which is missing such key offerings as Microsoft Word and Excel. Other than that, you get what you pay for: decent (but not fast) performance, a bright (but dull) display and a plastic design that feels sturdy but probably isn't as durable as what you get with a pricier tablet. Despite those limitations, this $90 slate is hard to beat for the price.

The Fire HD 8 is evidence cheap tablets aren’ t progressing as fast as cheap phones. It is basic. However, it is also very affordable and can handle games and apps very well given the price. Not perfect, but the best you can get at the price.

Despite its shortfalls, Amazon’s latest Fire HD 8 tablet is quite the tablet. At just £90 for the basic 16GB version, its excellent battery life, superb build quality and decent performance make it a great choice for those looking to save a bit of money, and it’s a particularly good choice for kids. It has its shortcomings, but at this price, you’d be hard-pushed to find a better value Android tablet for less. It wins a Recommended award.

If you’re after a simple and affordable family tablet boasting fast access to all of your Amazon Prime content, then the All-New Fire HD 8 tablet is a worthy purchase. The hardware is basic but backed up by lots of great software features, and the sub-£100 price point makes it easy on the wallet.

The latest Fire HD 8 delivers faster performance, a bigger battery and more base storage than the previous version for almost half the price. Its 8-inch screen is bright, the speakers are loud and it offers expandable microSD storage and ample parental controls. Amazon Prime members can access gobs of free video, music and other content with their subscription. Display isn't as sharp as that of current iPad Mini models; to truly take advantage of what the tablet has to offer, you need an Amazon Prime membership; slow charging (takes 6 hours to fully cap battery).

The Amazon Fire HD 8 ticks a lot of the right boxes. It’s affordable, well built and plays back video to an exceptionally high standard. But we’ll say it again – you need Amazon Prime to fully enjoy it. It’s not that it is a complete necessity, but the prominence in the operating system of Amazon’s own apps and services means without a Prime membership it’s a frustrating user experience. This caveat aside, it’s an incredibly priced media consumption tablet that exemplifies Amazon’s place in the low-end market – this over makes it an attractive, interestingly unique option.

The smaller Amazon Fire tablet, at $49.99, is practically an impulse buy. That's a big part of why we give it four stars and our Editors' Choice award. The Fire HD 8, at $89.99, takes a little more thought. It's an inexpensive tablet for consuming media, especially Amazon media, and that can be enough. My daughter, for example, has a tablet she uses exclusively for listening to music, playing Minecraft, looking things up on Wikipedia, and watching Steven Universe on Hulu—and the Fire HD 8 does all of those things. I just hope she doesn't ask for Marvel Unlimited.
