Reviews for the Aorus X7 v2
Two are better than one. Although it has not been long since it appeared on the market, the successor is already available: Not even five months after our test, Aorus launched the next model of its slim high-end gamer, the X7. Instead of a pair of GTX 765M in SLI, now two GTX 860M graphics chips deliver a lot of gaming performance.

The Aorus X7 isn’t perfect (we don’t like the noise or heat) and the second GPU may be wasted on some games, but it’s still one of the most desirable gaming laptops we’ve seen. If you’re not bothered about having a slim, attractive laptop and want to spend less, however, consider buying the Scan 3XS Graphite LG156. It also has great graphics performance and is powerful enough to use in place of a desktop computer.

While the Aorus X7 doesn't pave new ground in the field of portable gaming laptops, it isn't overshadowed by the competition, either. For $2,299, the X7 offers a Core i7 processor, dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M GPUs, three SSDs in RAID 0 configuration, a gorgeous 1080p display and stellar audio. The fact that Aorus managed to cram these components into a chassis that measures less than an inch thick is nothing short of an engineering marvel.

The Aorus X7 v2 is a sturdily made all-metal gaming laptop that keeps its waistline to around 1in, even if it still tips the scales beyond 3kg. With its dual-GPU setup it proved itself the fastest gaming laptop in the group, albeit with an unsurprising price premium.

Building on the foundations of the original X7, the v2 refresh takes the same sexy-looking and svelte 17.3in chassis and packs in some of today's highest-performing gaming components. Outfitted with a quad-core Intel Haswell processor, dual GeForce GTX 860M graphics, 16GB of memory and a trio of SSDs in RAID 0, the X7 v2 really is as fast as it sounds.

Despite these flaws, the Aorus X7 is an amazing machine. It's also incredibly expensive. In terms of performance, it just about beats the cheaper Schenker XMG P504, which is only around £100 cheaper. The mix of high performance and portability make the Aorus X7v2 one of the most attractive slim gaming notebooks on the market. Equipped with SLI-enabled dual Nvidia GeForce 860M GPUs the laptop offers graphical performance on par with any laptop on the market. The device also features a lightning fast processors, ample RAM and storage options, and best of all it crams all of that into a manageable 6.6 pound frame.

Gigabyte deserves praise for making a laptop that’s consistently quick in a chassis that’s much slimmer and lighter than rivals, but the Aorus struggles to cope in some departments. It’s loud and hot, has poor battery life, and its keyboard and screen aren’t as good as others. At this price, the Alienware 17 is a better option, and the MSI GT70 is better if you want to spend a little less cash.

When you need speed, the Aorus X7 v2 can deliver. It has dual GPUs, triple SSDs, a quad-core CPU, and it flies. It's super-slim considering all this good stuff is inside, but it is a wide unit that can be cumbersome to transport. Basically, put this unit on your wishlist if you're a gamer or enthusiast after a portable powerhouse. Just don't expect perfection from its input devices.
