Apple has given the MacBook's performance a much-needed boost, and it helps OS X zip along much better. Its critical flaws remain, but the 2016 version is less of a risk than it was last year. We just wish it was a bit cheaper.

There's no escaping the fact that this is a very similar laptop to its 2015 predecessor, which so divided the tech community. But we think the problems have been overblown. The engineering on show is superb, and the performance is completely acceptable for a modern-day computer of this size. The arguments that there should be more ports on the MacBook only exist because people want one, and are frustrated that their current set-up needs will not allow for it. Apple has undoubtedly improved the MacBook for 2016. It is a truly outstanding laptop that will be wrongly categorised as a luxury technological item. There's a difference between something costing a little too much and it being luxurious - just like the MacBook Air, this laptop deserves to fall in price and rise in specs to continue to be what we consider an excellent flagship computer. The world and its ports just need to catch up.

The Apple MacBook 2016 is an excellent piece of hardware with all the compromises and frustrations common with mobile tech. The single USB Type-C port is the hardest to swallow, especially given that USB Type-C accessories are prohibitively expensive. In a few years, USB Type-C accessories will be cheaper and this will be a moot point. But during this transition, we’re annoyed that a $1,299 laptop doesn’t ship with any extras to take the edge off. We can look past the other drawbacks — the lousy camera, shallow keyboard, and non-touch display — but the single port hinders productivity.

As good as last year’s model was, I felt like a really needed an excuse in order to justify buying one. This year’s model, however, with its better battery life, faster storage and quicker CPU is a laptop that needs no such vindication. If portability is the most important thing to you, there's simply nothing else like it. However, if you need more power, this probably isn't the laptop you're looking for.

The 2016 MacBook is much the same computer as that of last year in most respects, but it's more powerful and a little longer-lasting. Those in possession of a 2015 MacBook will find little reason to upgrade – unless they have a particular liking for Rose Gold, that is.

Apple finds itself in a simultaneously difficult and enviable position in 2016. Having cast its spell over the laptop, the smartphone and the tablet, it has run out of things to revolutionise, things to invent. It seems that Apple is starting to plateau, in both creative and financial terms, but (perhaps unfairly) it must live up to its own hype every time it releases a product. Such as this amazing MacBook, an update to the original 12-inch MacBook unveiled in 2015.

Apple did a fairly minimal amount of tweaking with the 2016 MacBook, dropping new Intel Core M processors and a faster SSD into the snazzy, slim, and solid-feeling chassis that debuted in 2015. We're sure the Rose Gold hue will make the system more appealing to some, but the other color options will still be there for those who prefer a more traditional (and professional) look.

It’s the MacBook Air’s prettier, younger brother. But sometimes we wish it had a bit more of the MacBook Air about it. One USB-C is only really going to cut if you’re one of those stereotype millennials who uses a laptop solely to watch YouTube, obsess over their Instagram likes and waste time browsing inane websites. For the remotely hardcore crowd, this is better as a second, ultraportable PC. And for the bargain-savvy buyer, why not check out Apple’s first-gen MacBook refurbs? Unless you’d lap up that extra hour’s battery life, the older version is just about as good.

Should you buy one? If your needs are relatively light, and if you value design and portability over everything else, then you'll love the MacBook. But you'll also find yourself grimacing occasionally when you release you've left the vital dongle you need to connect a monitor and power simultaneously at home. Thankfully, at least with this generation, you'll get closer to all-day battery life from it.

The decision of whether you should buy a new MacBook is a simple one: does it play to your strengths? Perhaps you need the lightest and most portable OS X machine out there today, one with good battery life. Maybe you appreciate an incredible, vibrant display that's equally as good at rendering your crisp documents as it is displaying the same amount of a spreadsheet as a 24-inch monitor.

For a lot of people, the MacBook is the ideal laptop. It’s light, small, easy to carry, and offers good performance for productivity software, though it can handle pro apps fine (you’ll just have to wait a little longer for some tasks). The MacBook is meant to serve for the user constantly on the go, and it serves that purpose well.

As ever, the 12" MacBook is a surprisingly polarizing little laptop. The first generation sold so well folks had to wait months to buy one, so some people obviously love it (and are willing to spend this much on an ultraportable). Others have lambasted it for lacking ports, having a Core M rather than Core i5 and for costing so darned much.
