The M4 MacBook Air keeps the same slim, lightweight design and vibrant display as its predecessors, but now sports the upgraded M4 chip and a new 12MP Center Stage camera for improved performance and video call experiences. The performance boost is most noticeable in media handling and AI-driven tasks, while battery life and sound quality remain stellar. It also introduces new features like support for two external displays, Wi-Fi 6E, and a new Sky Blue color option, all at a lower starting price. Overall, while current Apple Silicon users may not see a generational jump, those on older models or new buyers will find the M4 MacBook Air a compelling upgrade.

Most people, if they own anything other than a phone, keep only one additional device. If you decide that device should be a laptop, the MacBook Air is the best choice there is. It’s light as a feather and powerful enough to handle everything I could throw at it with absolute grace. Personally, I don’t have room in my life for a MacBook. I always plan on having some manner of desktop Mac to run my Plex server and store my media libraries. I’m happy with my Apple Vision Pro headset for handling lighter work and home entertainment. If I were to add another form factor to the mix, I would sooner grab an iPad for its unique capabilities as a tablet. Still, I was impressed by my time with the M4 Macbook Air for this review. It’s good to know that the vast majority of people who prefer laptops still have an excellent choice.

Mark's MacBook Air M4 review is here, and although it's not the biggest upgrade, Apple reminds us all why the MacBook Air is the best laptop for a lot of people.

Apple hit the sweet spot with this laptop, delivering an affordable option that should check all the boxes for a swath of users. The MacBook Air 13-inch M4 feels like the return of the original M1 Air. It's an undeniable value that will give you years of excellent performance, even if you pick up the base model. My limited complaints are also similar to those of the M1 Air, there are features that the vast majority of people will never miss. If you need one of the best 2-in-1 laptops, best Windows laptops, or best gaming laptops, then this isn't the laptop for you, but the MacBook Air 13-inch M4 is one of the best laptops and best MacBooks for most people.

The new MacBook Air may not be as seminal a machine as the recently updated Mac Mini, but it’s easily one of the best MacBook Airs Apple has ever released. It’s powerful, well-built, thin and light, has a long battery life, and is even cheaper than the model it replaces. Furthermore, it now comes with 16GB of memory as standard, which addresses one of our longest-standing and biggest issues with Apple’s base configuration MacBooks. However, it’s not perfect. The Liquid Retina display is starting to look outdated now given that most Windows laptops are steadily transitioning to OLED displays. Throttling can be an issue on longer or more intensive workloads. Also, having just 256GB and two USB-C ports is a bit miserly. Thankfully, none of these are dealbreakers and don’t detract from the fact that, for most people, the MacBook Air is all the MacBook they’ll need.

The 13-inch MacBook Air M4 offers the same design as the previous model but delivers better performance and a sharper camera while also delivering long battery life. I wish Apple would have included a nano-texture display option to reduce glare and that the SSD were a bit faster, but the $100 price cut solidifies this MacBook Air as the best laptop overall.

Apple’s M4 processor update, baseline memory increase, and price decrease have elevated the MacBook Air to its highest perch yet. Any time a company releases a product that can do more for less than the last model, we must recognize that. Hence our Editors’ Choice award for this year’s MacBook Air. While we don’t recommend owners of the recent M3 MacBook Air splurge on the M4 model, it should easily eclipse any MacBook Air released before last year’s edition. However, we’d be remiss not to recognize that the MacBook Air’s lofty position as the most emulated laptop of all time has come full circle. PC-based laptops that have been chasing the Air for years are starting to run faster and last longer, thanks in part to advancements in throughput and efficiency by AMD and Intel.

Apple's 13-inch MacBook Air remains my favorite laptop. The MacBook Air 13-inch (M4) has an excellent build and design, working on it is a pleasure, and the M4 provides all the power I need for the widest range of tasks. I appreciate the long battery life, bright, colorful screen, and clear audio. It has enough ports to support my almost always connected external screen, and I’m glad there’s still a vestigial 3.5mm headphone jack. macOS and the supporting Apple ecosystem are unparalleled. I’m still somewhat disappointed in Apple Intelligence, but hopeful we’ll see significant updates in the coming months – and Siri must get better soon if Apple hopes to compete in the AI space.

I’m going to go ahead and give the 2025 MacBook Air 13 a perfect score. It’s about time. To begin with, this might very well be the perfect 13-inch (or 14-inch) thin-and-light laptop design. It’s solid as a rock, looks great, and is eminently portable given its insane thinness. No, it doesn’t have OLED (yet), but until OLED can provide the same kind of efficiency, it’s not necessarily the best tradeoff for this class of laptop. It’s also very fast, beating out its competition in multi-core performance and demolishing it in single-core speed. And, its battery life maintains the most attractive performance-efficiency ratio over the best Windows has to offer. With a starting price of $1,000 for a very usable configuration, the only reason to pass up the MacBook Air 13 is if you just simply can’t live without Windows. I suspect that this will be fewer and fewer people as time goes by.

There’s remarkable consensus among reviewers. While the M4 MacBook Air represents an iterative update, they said, the combination of improved performance, better webcam, enhanced external display support, doubled base RAM and a lower price make it a compelling option. Tom’s Hardware called it “a really solid value,” while The Verge said “the MacBook Air continues to nail the fundamentals at a fairly affordable price.” Gizmodo recommended it as “the best starting place for those looking to get into Apple’s laptop ecosystem.” Wired maintained it’s “the best MacBook for most people.” Primary criticisms center on the limited port selection, the continued presence of the display notch and the missed opportunity for more vibrant color options.

After all of my testing and typing was done, I’ve returned to the same conclusion I had last year: the 15-inch MacBook Air M4 is the laptop I’m telling nearly everyone to get. Unless you need a laptop small enough for a seat-back tray on a plane (get the 13-inch MacBook Air or think about the iPad Mini), the combination of a larger display with Apple’s nimble M4 performance and excellent keyboard is hard to argue against. Those who prefer a laptop with a touchscreen should check out the Microsoft Surface Laptop and the Lenovo Slim 7x, and especially the former if you like USB-A. Lastly, anyone who’s got a MacBook Air with M2 or M3? Unless you really need that extra 20% or so performance or really fancy this Sky Blue design, I think you’re already good.

Once again, the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air are basically everything we want from ultraportable notebooks. They’re zippy, wonderfully light and can last well beyond a full day of work. While the M4 chip isn’t a transformative upgrade, it helps Apple keep pace with evolving PC notebook chips. And now that the MacBook Air starts at $999, even Windows users should consider making the jump.

This year, Apple has discontinued the older MacBook Airs, so if you can find a good deal on an M3, I’d grab that. However, those models will sell out soon, leaving most buyers with two options: a new M4 or a refurbished unit. Apple has some solid deals in its refurb store. At the time of writing, a base model M2 with 8GB of RAM is only $879, which is a great deal for office workers and students. If you need more power, there are some other refurbished deals, but this store changes its stock often, so you’ll need to see what’s available. If you want a new MacBook Air, I’d recommend buying it from Apple’s education store since anyone in Canada can access it.

Overall, the M4 MacBook Air is a good, if minor, update to an already fantastic laptop, and it has a lower price to boot. If you have an M3 Air or even an M2 Air, there are some reasons to upgrade, like the better camera and external display support. But the performance difference is modest. On the other hand, for Intel and M1 MacBook Air owners, the performance gap is sizeable enough that upgrading is definitely worth your while. Something to keep in mind, too, is that while the M3 MacBook Air is going away, you might be able to pick one of those up at a deep enough discount, new or refurbished, to make you forget about the features you're not getting with the M4.

I'm pretty sure that even Tim Cook would agree with me that Apple is simply coasting along with minimal product maintenance on the MacBook Air in 2025. So in the unlikely event where Apple's CEO listens to me, here goes nothing: Tim, feel free to write your opinion in the comments! I would also like to tell you, and just to you, Tim, that I don't think this is a bad thing. While the changes this year are marginal, the MacBook Air with M4 SoC is a better deal for two reasons: First, it comes with a better webcam, better connectivity for displays, and with the unmissable, more powerful SoC, providing it with obvious technical advantages over its predecessor. Unfortunately, these are not large enough technological leaps for existing customers to buy the new model.

Apple added just a helping of newness to the 2025 MacBook Air to keep things interesting, though I’m not sure there’s enough for recent buyers.

Apple revealed an updated MacBook Air, Mac Studio, iPad Air and entry-level iPad. They all have new chips, but CNET’s Bridget Carey says that with questions looming over the effect of tariffs, what’s most refreshing are the prices.
