Reviews for the Apple MacBook Pro 14 2023 M3

There are many spec sets and sizes of MacBook Pro on offer and these include the suped-up M3 Max versions. The higher you go, the more dizzying the prices get. Small businesses can use Apple Financial Services to find a flexible payment plan, which is probably best for newer businesses. You can also work out upgrades and trade-ins here. Similarly, the Apple for Work service can also help with after-sales support. However, even with the most affordable variants, the M3 MacBook Pro is a brilliant laptop. It has a premium feel regardless of RAM size or color. If you're after a professional-looking machine, that's innovative and reliable, the Apple M3 MacBook Pro should be top of your list.

All things considered, a starting price of S$2,320 is reasonable – if not for the lacking unified memory. The stingy 8GB base configuration puts a leash on the laptop’s full multitasking potential, demanding a S$600 top-up for 16GB of RAM. Still, it’s hardly a dealbreaker, so as long as users are willing to cut a compromise, they stand to gain a lot more from its versatile and reliable capabilities. A confident work-and-play machine, the MacBook Pro 14 M3 is a worthy successor to Apple’s entry-level lineup. Serious gaming isn’t its forte, but where it lacks, productivity mastery awaits.

Can you make do with 8GB? I suppose you can if you are only going to use it to reply to emails, check spreadsheets, work on presentations, and do the occasional light video editing. But it would severely limit the longevity of the machine. Remember, you cannot upgrade the memory. With storage, you can still make up in other ways like subscribing to iCloud+ and external storage drives. Ultimately, it is Apple’s stubborn refusal to outfit its entry-level machines with 16GB of memory as standard that prevents this MacBook Pro from getting a hearty and unreserved recommendation. But even then, this remains to be a mostly fantastic machine. Make sure you weigh your needs and spec your machine accordingly.

The Apple MacBook Pro 14 M3 has quite a few things to love about it, but the incredible battery life is worth mentioning again. Outside of another MacBook model, you’ll have a hard time finding better battery usage in a laptop. The screen is also fantastic, and the performance is surprisingly good even with the base 8GB RAM. That said, if you’re doing more than a little photo or video work, that RAM may not prove enough, and opting for more memory raises the cost considerably. The port layout and lack of Thunderbolt 4 is another issue, and getting around this requires upgrading to either an M3 Pro or M3 Max chipset, which costs even more. If you’re not sold on macOS, the Lenovo Yoga 9i Gen 8 (2023) is a great alternative, while Apple’s MacBook Air 15 M2 (2023) is a more affordable option than the newer M3 models that doesn’t slack in the power department. The 2023 MacBook Pro 14 M3 straddles the line between a heavily upgraded MacBook Air and a scaled-down MacBook Pro.

Besides, if you’re going down the premium professional creator laptop route already, chances are that you’ll find the latest laptops over on the Windows side of things just as expensive. The Asus Zenbook Pro 14 OLED for instance is in many ways a brilliant laptop on its own, packing an Intel Core i9, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 and a 14.5-inch OLED display that for many will be just as good as the Liquid Retina XDR panel here. It’s also RM10,999, which isn’t that far off from our MacBook Pro 14 that we have here. Then there’s the Dell XPS 15 that offers an Intel Core i7, 16GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce 4050 with a 15.6-inch, 3.5K OLED display, also priced at RM10,999. All in all, the new MacBook Pro with the M3 Pro is kinda ticking all the right boxes at the moment for a high performance, professional laptop.

As a successor to the 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro, the 14-inch MacBook Pro M3 is worthy. At $1,599/£1,699, the new MacBook Pro is $100/£100 more than the 13-inch MacBook Pro with 8GB of memory and a 512GB SSD, but the new laptop offers significant updates in all areas: the display, the audio system, the ports, and of course, the chip. However, the MacBook Air complicates a customer’s buying decision. The 13-inch MacBook Air M2 with 8GB of memory and a 512GB SSD is $1,399/£1,449, and a similarly configured 15-inch MacBook Air is $1,499/£1,599. So, the Air is cheaper, but its display isn’t as nice (but it’s still high quality) as the MacBook Pro’s, and the Air doesn’t have an HDMI port or an SDXC card slot. It’s likely you don’t need those features and can’t justify the extra money for the MacBook Pro.

The rest of the hardware remains best-in-class. The keyboard is a joy to type on and now has a proper row of physical function keys. The trackpad is humongous and extremely accurate and responsive. The six-speaker sound system continues to impress and is easily one of the best speaker systems you’ll hear on any notebook. There’s convincing bass and there's little distortion even at high volumes – weaknesses of many lesser notebook speaker systems. Perhaps what’s most telling is that while watching an episode of Loki, I didn’t feel that the speakers were lacking at all.

The Apple MacBook Pro (14-inch, M3) is a premium-looking device that offers great build quality thanks to the unibody aluminum design. The build is solid and the hinge stiffness is perfect. The Magic Keyboard may not have the best key travel but it’s comfortable for long hours of typing. The big touchpad is the real deal here, it’s one of the best trackpads that we have tested up to date. We intentionally bought the device’s base version with a 512GB SSD and just 8GB of unified memory. The latter is enough for normal work but if you open more than 12 websites at the same time, the memory will be filled and the swap file on the SSD will start to grow in size. That’s why, the 16GB version is more future-proof but you have to pay an extra $200 for it and a whopping $400 for the 24GB amount. Speaking of which, both memory and SSD are soldered so choose your configuration wisely before buying. At least you can connect an external HDD or SSD if you are running out of storage.

So, how does the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M3 SoC stack up? It boasts a pretty sizeable sharp, and vibrant display, one of the best webcams in the market, an impressive setup of speakers, and all the essential ports you may need as a professional. Moreover, not only does it offer more performance than most people will ever be able to extract out of it, but it also impresses with an outstanding 22 hours of battery life. Unless you have a very specific use case — like working on AI applications, or rendering complex CAD files, or creating complex animations — the M3 is enough. However, if your work involves a lot of 3D animations, rendering complex engineering and designing models, and working on AI models, you will be better off with the M3 Pro or M3 Max variants.

During the pandemic, I made a major shift and became a full-time Mac user. Before we were all confined to our homes, I used to switch between my MacBook Air for personal stuff and writing to the Windows workstation at the office for all official work. Stuck at home for close to two years, I did not have the second option and life became a lot simpler. In 2021, I made another shift, this time to the first MacBook Pro running on Apple silicon. And since then I have been using this device as my go-to computer. Now, maybe it is time to shift again, to the new 14-inch MacBook Pro powered by the M3 Apple silicon.

No, the M3 14-inch MacBook Pro doesn't have any staggering upgrades per se, but according to our testing, it has a significant performance jump over the M2. This translates to an uptick in performance, whether you're diving into photo retouching, video editing, and other tasks. Plus, for the first time, MacBook Pro comes with hardware accelerated ray-tracing, which means the graphics featured in games, particularly reflections and shadows, should look more realistic. And they're splashed across the laptop's striking 3024 x 1964-pixel mini-LED display. Keep in mind that there are rumors that an updated Air, equipped with an M3 chip, is coming next year. If the Air's thin-and-light, fanless design is sufficient for your workflow, it may be worth the wait. However, if this Pro meets your needs as a creator, go for it.

The M3 Pro MacBook Pro is a great laptop for all intents and purposes — the M3 Pro is blazingly fast (especially in graphics), battery life is astounding, and you’re getting a better display alongside those stellar speakers in a rock solid aluminum design. But in the face of a new, lower cost 14-inch Pro with M3, it’s hard to justify who will actually benefit from this middle-of-the-road option in the face of saving $400.

Now, onto the most important question of this review: Should the MacBook Pro 14 M3 be your next laptop? In the around-three weeks of review period, on its own, I found the MacBook Pro 14 M3 to be a pretty perfect laptop. It has a great display, excellent battery, and it can handle decently power-intensive tasks. For anyone willing to shell upwards of Rs 1,70,000, the MacBook Pro 14 M3 is definitely a good buy. But in its base variant, it is also a good buy only for people who require its pro screen and pro speakers. And who need a cooling fan — because they will be doing a lot of video and performance intensive work on it. Otherwise, and for more regular use, the MacBook Air 13 (or Air 15) with its sleeker and lighter design is a better option. The Air 15 even has a better battery life, and while it lacks the M3 (it comes with M2) for regular office use — say emailing, some coding, browsing and so on and so forth — you are unlikely to notice a difference.

If you’re going to buy a MacBook Pro 14in, my advice would be to stump up the extra cash and go for the M3 Pro or M3 Max versions – in Space Black – or to stick with the cheaper M2 MacBook Air, in either 13.6in or 15in sizes. The entry-level M3 MacBook Pro might fill a gap in the range where the 13in M2 MacBook Pro once existed but, although it is faster than the M2 MacBook Air machines, it doesn’t make as much sense from a performance-per-pound perspective as it perhaps should. Although its battery life is superior to competing Windows machines, it isn’t any better than other, cheaper machines in Apple’s laptop range.

I didn’t see this coming, but Apple has gone and announced its M3 family of chips and updated its lineup of 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros. A corollary effect of all these announcements is that the 13-inch MacBook Pro (you know, the one with the Touch Bar) is no more. Instead, we now have a 14-inch MacBook Pro that comes with the base M3 chip. Is this now the best MacBook for most people in Apple’s MacBook lineup? How does it compare to the MacBook Air? How fast is the new M3 chip? And can I play Baldur's Gate 3 on it? The answers to all these questions and more are in this review.

Apple's confusing laptop family finally makes sense this year. The long-rumored 15-inch MacBook Air arrived months ago, and the company surprised us by delivering two MacBook Pro revisions in less than 12 months. While I appreciated the speed bump that the M2 Pro models brought, the new M3-equipped MacBook Pro 14- and 16-inch are a clearer sign of where Apple is headed. The company has killed off the long-suffering 13-inch MacBook Pro, which was cursed with a Touch Bar and an aging design. Now, its Pro machines are truly geared towards professionals, while the Air models are meant for everyone else.

It’s hard to look for flaws in a notebook that’s consistently rated 4.5 stars, especially when not much has changed. The design, while a bit staid, is still beautiful, the display is bright and colorful, even the speakers and keyboard are great. In fact, the MacBook Pro 14 has only gotten better with the addition of Apple’s new M3 chip, which delivers better overall and gaming performance than its predecessor with even longer battery life. And while consumers faithful to the discontinued MacBook Pro 13 are going to gnash their teeth about having to fork out an additional $300 for the $1,599 MacBook Pro. It’s simply the best all-round MacBook Pro on the market that can do everything well without breaking the bank hands down.

Overall, Apple made the right move consolidating and getting rid of the 13-inch Pro. That extra inch of screen is great, everything works beautifully, and the return of physical function keys on the entry-level MacBook Pro is chef’s kiss. I just wish you got more for the starting price — $1,599 is too much for 8GB of RAM, and just because you can’t use two external displays with an M3 chip doesn’t mean you couldn’t make the most out of three Thunderbolt ports. It’s hard to tell who Apple imagines using this entry-level MacBook Pro. It seems to have a clearer idea of the serious Pros and the hordes of casual users. But the line between an Air and an entry-level Pro is blurrier than ever. I consider myself smack dab in the heavy Air user / light Pro user category. I spent a lot of time hopping between them while writing this review, running numbers while sifting through various configurations. It just turned me into the confused math lady meme. Gripes aside, I’ve been very happy using this as my daily driver for the past week.

By bringing base-level M3 processing to the 2023 14-inch MacBook Pro, Apple has rebuilt the bridge between its Air and Pro lines that the 13-inch model represented. This is exciting news if you fit that niche, but it doesn't make for Editors' Choice honors—that credit goes to the M3 Pro version. Intel and Nvidia have undeniably made remarkable gains to challenge Apple's leading laptops, but the new entry-level MacBook Pro can not only ace most creative tasks but run honest-to-goodness games on its superb screen. If you want more power than the MacBook Air provides, this is the MacBook to buy. Just know that workstation-class customers should look elsewhere in the MacBook Pro line, not to mention the Windows world.

The MacBook Pro 14-inch with M3 chip delivers blistering performance and an even brighter display along with surprisingly robust graphics and super-long battery life. And at $1,599, it’s relatively affordable. However, Windows systems in this price range are better for gaming, and you get one less port than the pricier M3 Pro MacBook.
