The iPad 10.2 (2019) is Apple’s refreshed and still-reasonably-priced iPad with a marginally bigger screen, Smart Keyboard Cover compatibility, and extra RAM. Even though it’s not very different from last year’s iPad 9.7, which now also runs iPadOS, this 7th-gen iPad continues to be brilliant at the basics.

Apple's 10.2" iPad has been out for around 6 months now, and it's now become a MUCH better iPad than before. There have recently been some amazing software feature additions, including new multitasking and file management features. The best feature is the new cursor support that came with iPadOS 13.4. This basically allows your iPad to use a bluetooth mouse or supported trackpad like the Magic Trackpad 2 to get an actual cursor that you can move around and click on the screen. However, the best way to use this new cursor feature is by putting on a keyboard case that has a built-in trackpad, like the brand new Logitech Combo Touch keyboard case, and that's EXACTLY what we did.

It might not instantly appear so, but the iPad Air is the pick of the current iPad range. It is more affordable than the Pros and only a little more expensive than the much smaller Mini, and while it does command a fair premium over the entry-level iPad, its better screen and potentially longer useful life more than justify the extra outlay.

It lacks the sheer tech muscle of the iPad Pro range. And does not even have the sort of specs that the Air and Mini do. In fact if anything, the iPad of 2019 seems almost like a clone of its 2018 avatar. The few things that do mark it as different, however, also make it special. As does its price tag.

The standard iPad is the most affordable model in Apple’s current tablet range, and sacrifices have had to be made to deliver a large screen at a low price. That means it doesn’t have quite the same video and audio sparkle of its siblings.

Overall, the iPad 10.2 is certainly a great tablet with loads of features that would make us recommend it to you. However, it comes with a couple of caveats. If you already own a recent older iPad version, like the ones from last year or the year before, you won’t get much out of an upgrade to the latest one. Similarly, if you see an older model on sale for significantly less, you should go for that instead. For first time buyers who want a cheap iPad though, this is a great deal, if not one of the best.

There’s no denying this is a great, even fantastic, tablet that’s easy to recommend. If you want to upgrade an older iPad to a device that feels slicker, offers integration with the Apple Keyboard and Apple Pencil and has a larger display, then you’ll feel right at home with the iPad 7.

Yes, the iPad is a computer. And for $329 (£349, AU$529) as a starting price, Apple has made the iPad its lowest entry point for a computer, period. Of course, what a computer is to you may vary. My family uses an iPad on a daily basis, sharing it around the home. Just the basic 2018 model. No keyboard. My wife does all her everyday work on it. She doesn't look for a laptop. Crazy? I don't know, she seems happy. I use a laptop. But I commute with an iPad.

We're not saying everyone should go for the more expensive option. If you're looking for something to play around and browse on, this is fantastic, and it's definitely capable of more when needed. But if you plan to be more productive with your tablet, we'd choose the Air.

The biggest competitor to the iPad is the iPad. Apple offers the iPad mini starting at Rs 34,900, which is small, light and convenient to travel with. The iPad mini offers twice the storage, but the smaller 7.9-inch display may not be enough for you. At Rs 44,900, you have the iPad Air, which comes with a faster A12 Bionic chipset. But if you want an affordable tablet that not only works as an entertainment device but also as a makeshift computing device, it doesn't get better than the iPad (2019).

The iPad (2019) has a big display, performs reasonably well, and offers great battery life. It's nice to have the Smart Connector on this iPad, in case you want to use Apple's excellent Smart Keyboard Cover accessory and don't mind shelling out for it. Since the processor is older, there's a chance that the iPad (2019) may feel a bit sluggish a few years down the line.

With its slightly larger screen and the introduction of the new iPadOS 13 operating system, the 2019 iPad is the safe, familiar and affordable iPad option. It lacks some of the speed and design points of the higher-end models, but that's why this is the perfect iPad option for many – as there's still no better entry-level tablet around.

Apple has made its entry-level iPad even better with some small tweaks while keeping its price the same (prices start at S$499). That’s a commendable feat. If you feel like your iPad or tablet is getting old and needs replacing, this new iPad is a no-brainer. You get most, if not all of the important features of the pricier iPads but at a much lower price. And with all the new features enabled by iPadOS, it might even be enough to replace your desktop or notebook. In short, there’s no question that anyone looking to buy a new tablet should start their search with this new 7th generation iPad.

If you’re looking for a budget iPad in the market, then yes, the 2019 iPad is the best tablet to go for. The entry-level iPad, in my opinion, is a good option there with a big screen and solid performance. Battery life is solid, too. iPadOS is a powerful mobile operating system, and the tablet supports tons of apps and features. I think you’ll like the new iPad.

The iPad Air, though, has a marginally larger screen that's noticeably nicer, thinner body, slightly lighter weight, better camera, and guaranteed future-proof faster processor, plus extra storage. For £130 more, that's a really solid set of upgrades.

The £130 extra you can pay for a base configuration iPad Air buys you a faster processor, a lighter frame and a better screen, but for most people, none of these things are must-haves, especially as the iPad remains an attractive and well-performing tablet despite its aging hardware. And the slightly bigger display and Smart Connector bring it even closer to the mid-tier tablet.

And here’s a tip: if you absolutely must get the iPad (2019) and are planning to outfit it with a Smart Keyboard — every Smart Keyboard is compatible with it. For the purposes of this review, I attached it to an old Smart Keyboard made for the iPad Pro 9.7-inch. And while it looked a bit funky, with a keyboard smaller than the actual tablet, it still worked. Do with this information as you will.

The addition of a Smart Connector and Apple's new iPadOS software turns the entry-level iPad from a passable laptop replacement into a device that may actually be the best sub-£500 device for business users, with excellent battery life, a great screen and some very versatile features.

Still, though, the iPad is so great across the board that it's still the tablet I'd recommend to most people. For writing with an easy-to-use physical keyboard, to gaming in AR, watching movies and listening to music, there's no tablet that's better at everything as the iPad.

Apple’s new entry-level iPad packs a new, bigger screen and a magnetic Smart Connector. It’s no faster than the model it replaces, which sometimes feels limiting, but its blend of improved software, long battery life and a great app ecosystem still mean it’s the best tablet you can buy for under $500.

Even though the processor is getting a little long in the tooth and Apple’s Smart Keyboard is too pricey, it remains impressive that you can get a computer this good for this price. It’s not a device that I would recommend upgrading to if you have a tablet you’re even moderately happy with, but it is a device I am sure you’ll be happy with if you buy it.

By including options such as the Smart Connector and improving the screen size, Apple has made the iPad as appealing as it probably can without changing the price, and as such, as I see this as a quiet and rare push to bring people to into Apple's wider ecosystem by making an extremely attractive entry-level device. It's also a relatively affordable Apple device to buy if you'd like to take advantage of Apple's offer of a free year of Apple TV+ for buying a new Apple device. And once the price drops at third-party retailers - and it inevitably will within the next few months - it'll be even more appealing.

The new iPad for 2019 was something of a surprise - we weren't expecting Apple to refresh its entry-level tablet, but what we've got is something that delivers better performance and a more attractive screen at a strong price point.

The overall look and feel is familiar, but because of its larger display, this iPad is slightly bigger and heavier than the one it replaces. The last generation iPad had a 9.7-inch display while this new model has a 10.2-inch display. It’s a Retina class display, which means it’s super sharp. The panel itself supports a resolution of 2,160 x 1,620 pixels and like all the other displays that you find on Apple products, it looks crisp, sharp, and vivid.

The entry-level iPad is an excellent, relatively affordable all-purpose tablet. Add a Smart Keyboard and an Apple Pencil, and you have a solid productivity machine. It's not as powerful as any of the other iPads (including the $399 mini), but it's the most affordable of the bunch and we expect it will serve you well for at least three to four years. If you want the utmost power for pro-level tasks, get the iPad Pro. And if you value portability above all else, you might want to consider the iPad mini. But the standard iPad is a one-size-fits-all solution for most tablet buyers, and our Editors' Choice.

The design is starting to look old at this point, especially in the presence of Apple's super fancy new iPad Pros, but then those machines are considerably pricier. At this price, with this much portability, and with all of the new functionality enabled by iPadOS, the most affordable iPad looks like a very tempting alternative to budget Windows notebooks. Furthermore, this new iPad will also act as a low-priced gateway, alongside the new iPod Touch, to the world of Apple Arcade.

This is Apple updating its standard iPad to take advantage of the new iPadOS operating system and ensure that the iPad customer doesn't get left behind, and not much more. Using a series of "older technologies" already tried and proven on other devices like the iPhone 7 or the current iPad Pro range, Apple is able to deliver a new iPad that is likely to appeal to many, especially those who are getting involved with the Apple tablet for the first time or upgrading from an earlier model. If that sounds negative, it shouldn't be. From our brief play, this looks to be a good all-round iPad that will please those not looking for the latest cutting-edge Apple tech or to break the bank.
