If you already own the last-generation iPad mini, the answer is probably no. You don’t need the improved performance of the A17 Pro to browse the web, reply to emails, play games, and catch up on shows. The A15 Bionic in the last iPad mini is perfectly capable of that. In fact, possibly the only thing that the new iPad mini can do that the last iPad mini can't is Apple Intelligence. Really, the main reason why you might want to update is because of Apple Intelligence. But since it isn’t available for me to test, it’s impossible for me to say right now if it’s worth upgrading for it. Remember I said this new iPad mini was tricky to review? This is why. My main issue with the iPad mini is that its display is starting to look dated and could really use an upgrade.

Every time I attend a press launch event, a product briefing, or an interview, I make sure to carry my Moleskine reporter’s notebook. It’s an integral part of what I do, and I’m sure my fellow journalists can relate to this. I often joke that you’re not a journalist if you don’t carry a notepad with you. However, as a tech journalist writing about personal technology for a living, I also try to review new products and incorporate them into my daily routine to see how I can benefit from them. Recently, I had the opportunity to try out the new iPad mini, and honestly, what intrigued me more than the usual features associated with the iPad was the idea that I could replace my pen and notebook with it.

Apple actually included a fair amount of upgrades in the iPad mini–but if you were hoping for Apple to unveil a new approach with the iPad mini, you’ll need to keep hope alive for possibly a few more years. Basically, the new iPad mini is a chip upgrade to support Apple Intelligence and not much more than that. If you have the 6th-generation iPad mini that works well, and you’re wondering about upgrading, the question to ask yourself is how much you want to use Apple Intelligence. Try it on another device if you can and gauge how much you use it, then you can figure out if you need a new iPad mini. If you don’t care about Apple Intelligence (even after trying it), chances are you won’t care about the new iPad mini, either, unless your 6th-generation iPad mini needs repairs and you’ve been putting them off.

The iPad Mini 7 is compact and fast, and its Apple silicon processor is built to last for years. While I wouldn't buy it for the AI features or to edit media, it's an excellent companion tablet for Apple users looking for a device that can go with them. It also performs well for quick work, like editing a video in CapCut or a social media post in PS Express. Apple appears steadfast in making Apple Intelligence its future, but the road has been full of obstacles and stumbles.

Unless you're looking for an all-in-one media consumption companion tablet and don't mind a lackluster display, most people will be better off consuming content on their smartphone over the iPad mini (2024). This doesn't necessarily make it a bad tablet, but it's designed with a specific type of iPad user in mind. Most people are better off using their smartphone instead of shelling out the cash for an iPad mini. After all, if you have an iPhone or a recent Android device, the display is likely OLED, features a higher refresh rate, and is nearly the same size as Apple's tiny tablet. As far as I'm concerned, Apple's bigger iPads are where it's at.

Meanwhile, the basic non-Mini iPad has no 2024 upgrade yet despite being two years old. I'd expect, and want, exactly the same features this Mini has on the 11th-gen iPad to come: Pencil Pro support and Apple Intelligence compatibility. In the meantime, entry-level iPad shoppers are going to get compromises. The Mini is the basic set of upgrades I'd expect for a multiyear tune-up, and hopefully, Apple doesn't cut any more corners on the next basic iPad. I'm not won over by Apple Intelligence yet, and by the time Apple's AI features evolve to be truly, deeply useful, there might be newer iPads to consider. Maybe an entry-level iPad update, launching next year, would be an even better fit. In the meantime, anyone hoping for a not-too-expensive iPad for kids might consider the Mini for its relative updates and slightly lower cost than the Airs… but it's still not super-affordable enough to replace the basic iPad.

The things I enjoy about the iPad mini are all present and correct in this 2024 update. It's still an arguably perfect-sized companion device, neither too expensive nor too large to make you question why you're carrying both it, and your laptop, in your bag. The screen is great for video — markedly bigger than even that of an iPhone 16 Pro Max — but in a device still comfortable to hold one-handed. And, if your handwriting is more legible than mine, an iPad mini with Apple's stylus makes a fantastic note-taking device. At the same time, having my finger summoned to the Touch ID button feels clunky compared to other Apple devices seamlessly using Face ID. The jelly scrolling of the iPad mini 6 hasn't been fixed, and the camera improvements are marginal.

If you’re looking for a smaller format tablet, the iPad mini remains a great choice. Thanks to the chip upgrade, this is now a hugely powerful device that can easily fit inside a jacket pocket. It’s perfect for travel or just keeping in touch on the move. What the iPad mini A17 Pro isn’t is a laptop replacement. This is very much designed to touch and draw. There’s no Magic Keyboard option as there is for the Pro and Air models. Even the base level iPad has a Magic Keyboard Folio accessory. For the mini your only choice is a third party model. If you want to explore Apple’s Intelligence features when they launch later this year, the iPad mini is the cheapest way to get access to them.

Apple’s latest iPad mini is tiny but mighty with all the features and performance you’d expect from the larger iPads in a compact, versatile form factor that you can carry anywhere. On the list of good things coming in small packages then the iPad mini should be right at the top.

There isn’t a better small tablet on the market than the iPad Mini 7 and even though this isn’t a huge upgrade if you picked up the iPad Mini 6, its beefier internals and support for the forthcoming Apple intelligence still make it a worthy upgrade. Performance is faster, there’s support for a newer Wi-Fi standard, no more 64GB storage option and double the memory – plus it works with the superior Apple Pencil Pro. The biggest decision you have to make is whether you want this – which of course benefits from its dinky dimensions – or the £100/$100 pricier iPad Air M2. Both are great, though I would go for the Air – unless size is the key factor.

The variety in iPad sizes is impressive. You can get everything from a 13-inch giant iPad Pro down to an 8.3-inch iPad mini. Most people probably live in the middle with the popular 10.9-inch iPad Air or the new 11-inch Air, but that little one with the 8.3-inch Liquid Retina Display has its adherents. It's an almost pocket-friendly device that's popular with pilots, artists, ardent notetakers, social media scrollers, students, and readers. It's the color reading screen for those who don't want to read comics on a black-and-white Kindle (though that new Colorsoft does change things, am I right?). It's sometimes the second multipurpose slab in your arsenal, small and light enough to join you on vacation, and it's sometimes the perfect back-porch streaming companion.

The iPad mini 7 is a great update, offering excellent performance and battery life while retaining its predecessor's vibrant display and portable design. Though it keeps the portrait-oriented front camera and is incompatible with Apple Pencil 2, this tablet’s strengths outweigh its flaws. The iPad mini 7 delivers the full iPad experience, only on a smaller device.

The reviewer for Wired summed up their thoughts by saying, “For newcomers or anyone with an older mini, this is otherwise a great tiny tablet. With a modern chip that supports the latest software smarts and accessories, the iPad mini has been future-proofed for the next few years.” And Engadget noted, “If you just want a little couch computing companion, or a tablet so small and light that you can take it everywhere with you, the iPad mini remains your best choice.” Cnet is less upbeat, saying “The 2024 iPad Mini, for all its subtle upgrades, doesn’t really move me much. It’s barely changed from its 2021 update.”

That being said, it’s nice to see the iPad mini get an update. It’s been three years since the last one and it deserves its place in Apple’s tablet lineup. This is a tablet that’s compact enough to sling in a bag without a second thought, and yet the screen is large enough to deliver more expansive media output than your phone, albeit not quite at the same level of quality. I also love the idea of using the iPad mini as an overpowered note-taking, sketching and reading device. Coupled with an Apple Pencil Pro and the smarts of Math Notes and (eventually) Apple Intelligence, it makes the ultimate digital notepad. It can turn your scribbles into readable handwriting, work out equations for you, generate graphs and even transcribe and summarise the spoken word.

The iPad mini is back and is built for the future. With Apple Intelligence on the horizon, this device is ready for one of the US tech firm’s biggest-ever changes and that’s important as this smart feature is set to get better and better over time, and the older iPad mini models aren’t going to get it. The A17 Pro boost also means users get more power for photo editing, playing games and multitasking. Battery life is good, it works with the Apple Pencil Pro, and you get all the usual extras such as a solid Liquid Retina screen, premium design and good cameras. It’s also powered by the market-leading iPadOS which still leads the pack when it comes to tablets. It’s also nice that Apple has switched the entry-level mini from 64G to a more useful 128GB.

In summary, the 2024 iPad mini stands out as an excellent choice for creators and those seeking a portable device with impressive battery life. With its compact size, powerful performance, and enhanced features, the device is an attractive option for creatives. Users can expect similar long-lasting battery life, augmented by the efficiency of the new chip and low power mode for extended usage.

If you're new to the iPad, and you want the most compact one around (or any compact tablet), the new iPad mini 7 is the best choice. If you already rock the iPad mini 5th generation or earlier, it's also a no brainer; the new one looks better and is a lot more powerful. And if you own the previous, 6th generation iPad mini, it could also be worth upgrading, but if it's still fast enough for you and you don't care much about the AI features, you'll be OK if you sit this one out.

It is nice that the company upgraded it enough to support Apple Intelligence, but since most people use the mini for pretty targeted tasks, there is a lot there that will likely go unnoticed. And like the iPhone 16 series, most of the AI software isn’t out yet and won’t come to Canada for another month after the U.S. (unless you change your device’s region to USA English). I can’t hate this iPad mini that much. I easily used my old one enough over the last three years to justify its price tag, but it would have been nice for Apple to upgrade the screen more since that’s the main aspect people interact with.

Honestly, I was half tempted to copy and paste my iPad mini 6th-gen review, and in all-caps add IT’S GOT AN A17 PRO NOW, before nipping off for an early lunch. Because barely anything else has changed. Apple might then point to Wi-Fi 6E over Wi-Fi 6 and add that it’s doubled the storage at each price point, the latter of which means the mini no longer starts with a miserly 64GB. These are good things. Neither moves the dial from ‘whatevs’ to ‘party time’. But does that matter? Not really. Taken on its own merits, the new iPad mini is an objectively good – if pricey – tiny tablet with plenty of power. And although the small screen might degrade certain experiences – movies; complex games; writing; comics – it’s my favourite iPad for faffing about online, reading prose, casual gaming and doodling.

And wait, hang on: if you’re doing a lot of handwritten math or writing a ton of emails, you’d likely rather have a bigger screen or a keyboard attachment, wouldn’t you? The new Mini ostensibly exists for a user who wants the absolute best pen experience, a million new AI-enabled productivity tools, and the absolute smallest screen that gives them both, no matter the tradeoffs. That’s a pretty tight Venn diagram, if you ask me. There are so many other interesting things Apple could do with the Mini. It could give it iPhone Pro Max-level imaging and a Camera Control button and make this the device it hopes Hollywood will use to make movies.

Taken on its own, the new iPad Mini is just about the perfect small tablet. It’s a delight to have in your hands, fast enough for most people’s needs and can last through a full day of reading, streaming and gaming on the go. Its improved stylus support makes it a great portable drawing slate, and even if you don’t care about playing the latest triple-A games or tapping into Apple Intelligence, you’ll at least be future- proofed when it comes to performance. If you’re buying your first iPad Mini or upgrading from a fifth-generation model or older, I feel confident saying you’ll love this tablet.

The iPad Mini 7 just dropped, after years of anticipation. Is the iPad Mini 7 worth it? What are the new features on the new iPad Mini 7 and how does it compare, iPad Mini 6 vs iPad Mini 7? Should you upgrade to the iPad Mini 7?
