Reviews for the Apple iPad Pro 12.9 2020
Even though the iPad Pro 12.9 (2020) is cheaper than its predecessor, it comes with superior hardware. For example, Apple has equipped its tablet for professional users with a stronger SoC as well as a new 12-MP camera with a LiDAR sensor. The device is still holding on to the claim of being able to fully replace a traditional laptop.

For those of you that bought themselves a Magic Keyboard and an Apple Pencil 2, you will be happy to know that the iPad Pro (2021) will support them fully. You can still use the trackpad as a mouse pointer, the Pencil 2 still attaches magnetically and charges from the iPad. The iPad Pro 12.9 (2021) specifically will be a bit tighter fit in an older version of the Magic Keyboard — that's because the new tablet is 0.5 mm thicker than last year's edition. Not a huge deal (not as huge as it was made on Twitter), but I would still be cautious about the keys leaving marks on the iPad's screen due to the tight fit (ahem, MacBook Pro...). There were no new accessories announced, but it's worth mentioning that — yes — the iPad Pro (2021) comes with a USB Type-C port.

The moment — and it has been a while — since Apple announced the pricing of the iPad Pro one knew that the most obvious quip would be: too expensive. That’s a fair point. The iPad Pro (11-inch variant) starts at Rs 71,900 and goes up to Rs 1,16900 depending on the storage capacity you want. The 12.9-inch variant — the one you should buy if you do — comes at a starting price of Rs 89,900 and goes up to Rs 1,34,900. That’s a lot of money and we haven’t even gone into the “must-have” accessories to get the best out of the iPad Pro. The Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil will set you back by another Rs 40,000. So even if you get the basic configuration, you are looking at a cool net spend of Rs 1 lakh at least.

The Apple iPad Pro continues to be the company’s most premium tablet but you get what you pay for – the top of the line experience, at a price. The Magic Keyboard is certainly pricey but it’s the closest you will get to a proper keyboard experience for a tablet.

iPad Pro 2020 is a breathtaking device for several reasons, from its industry-leading design to its… well, industry-leading performance. Despite some improvements from Samsung, Android tablets still fail to lay a glove on the Apple tablet champ. With the iPad Pro, you get a gorgeous media machine that can now provide an immense productivity experience in the same package.

We’ve followed the iPad Pro since its launch some four years ago, buying each new model as they came along. With the 2020 version, there are significant changes to the platform. The big question, however, is whether it’s worth it: is this a good inflection point for an upgrade, and does it deliver sufficient capability and value for money? In short, should the new iPad Pro be on your Lidar?

The Apple iPad Pro (12.9) is a fantastic machine. It may be a bit unwieldy as a lap-based slate, but it takes on a life of its own when paired with a keyboard and other input accessories. The costly tablet easily outshines Android-based offerings and does a fine job of competing with Microsoft's Surface Pro. If you can afford the iPad Pro, it's the tablet to beat.

The iPad Pro is a premium tablet for sure as the 11-inch iPad Pro starts at Rs 71,900 for the Wi-Fi model and Rs 85,900 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model, and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro starts at Rs 89,900 for the Wi-Fi model and Rs 1,03,900 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model. But if you are in the market looking for a tablet that will last you long, cater to your everyday needs, and has mobility by its side, the iPad Pro is the closest thing, according to us, that can replace your laptop for sure.

So the iPad Pro is for everyone on the move but needs unfettered access to computing power and convenience. The raw processing power, especially with video and photo editing tools along with the power to sketch also makes this a natural choice for creative professionals. If you are looking for a tablet to watch movies and write emails on, then there are cheaper iPads out there. This iPad Pro is clearly replacing a high-end laptop and that should be what you are comparing this with.

The same is true for the iPad Pro – the only reason I’d choose the Surface Pro over the iPad Pro is that many design, video and animation applications either don’t exist on the iPad (Adobe XD and InDesign) or exist in cut-down forms (Premiere Rush). The iPadOS’s clunky approach to files, folders and especially moving files between apps is one of the few areas where Windows does it better – and working with third-party online storage whether Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive can be a right pain.

The flip-side to this is that if you grew up on iPhones and iPads, then maybe iPadOS will come naturally to you. And, of course, there are some things it can do a lot better than Macs can, like signing, scanning, and making quick edits on documents, taking handwritten notes, and more. If you are comfortable with iPadOS, then there’s no better mobile device than the iPad Pro. But having said that, this new model is only a minor update to the one it replaces. Because other than the lidar scanner, the two are practically identical. If you already own the iPad Pro from late 2018, I’ll advise you to sit this one out unless you think the lidar scanner will be a game-changer for you.

Apple’s new 12.9in iPad Pro is among the most powerful on the market right now, with the new A12Z chipset beating just about every competitor in benchmark tests, but it’s also one of the most expensive options in our chart. The huge 120Hz 12.9in display is great for graphics design, watching movies and browsing social media, but it’s not until you pair it with the Magic Keyboard that the potential becomes clear.

This is the best iPad Apple has ever made, and peripherals like the new Magic Keyboard make Apple’s tablet more appealing as a work machine. The fact remains, though, that unless you’re heavily involved in video editing or professional artwork, most people will be served just fine with the $499 iPad Air—although it currently doesn’t come with that spiffy keyboard. If you do need the power of a Pro, though, it’s still worth considering getting the 2018 model. On the low end, at least, you’ll almost certainly be able to find one for a lower price, and Apple’s new Magic Keyboard is even compatible with it.

There’s no question this technology is clever, but I consider it a nice-to-have feature. It is far from essential as things stand right now. That could all change with the arrival of new applications that make use of it. Nothing springs to mind, but if it did I’d be a wealthy software entrepreneur not a journalist.

Here’s the thing, though. Just as when you’ve lived with an electric car it can be hard to go back to old-school gasoline, so getting a taste of the iPad Pro mobile life can make laptop shortcomings glaringly clear. For an increasingly large number of people, Apple’s tablet isn’t just an alternative to a traditional laptop, it’s better than one. That’s abundantly clear with the 2020 iPad Pro.

Apple's 2020 iPad Pro has received a total of 7 changes compared to the 2018 iPad Pro. We go through the significance of each change based on my own personal opinion. We also go through why these changes matter in terms of Apple's master plan. We then take a look at why Apple would release this updated 2020 iPad Pro when there are rumors of Apple making a much better A14X-packing Mini-LED display iPad Pro later this year. And finally.. we reveal what we think Apple's master plan is and what product they actually want you to buy the most.

I've settled for using the Brydge case with Apple's Magic Trackpad sitting by the side as a solution for now -- which isn't ideal, but it's more than I had a month ago. But again, considering how early out of the gate Brydge's iPad keyboard solution is, odds are that future trackpad/keyboard solutions (including Brydge's) will be more polished.

With each passing year, the iPad line comes closer and closer to that laptop-tablet hybrid that many products before it tried to be yet didn’t quite hit the mark. In order for a hybrid to feel right, it needs to strike that balance between portability and no-compromise performance.

Lisa Gade reviews the 2020 refresh of the Apple iPad Pro, available in 11” and 12.9” sizes. The design is unchanged from the previous gen models, other than the square camera cluster on the back, which now houses 2 cameras instead of 1 plus a LIDAR sensor for improved AR. The iPads run iOS 13 on the Apple A12Z Bionic CPU with 6GB RAM. Base storage is doubled to 128GB, and you can get it with up to 1TB storage. As ever, there’s a cellular option, a USB-C port that supports monitors, SD card readers and more. Both have 120Hz True Motion IPS Retina displays, support the Apple Pencil 2 and are compatible with the existing Keyboard Folio and the upcoming Magic Keyboard with trackpad.

The 2020 iPad Pro is a terrific tablet that, thanks to features like trackpad support and some under-the-hood tweaks, comes closer than ever to feeling like a traditional computer. It doesn't quite get there because of some inherent iPadOS limitations, but there's enough performance and flexibility here that I've largely been able to leave my laptop to the side. Apart from its new ultra-wide camera and LiDAR sensor, though, the hardware hasn't changed much compared to the 2018 model. Because of that, this year's iPad Pro is a great starting point for people who want a more premium tablet experience, but existing Pro owners shouldn't feel like they’re missing out.

The new iPad Pro 2020 is another impressive tablet – but so were the models from 2018. Those devices were powerful, capable and had a multitude of improvements to the technology, and the latest iPad Pro has all of that too; however, apart from a small upgrade in terms of power, new camera tech that has few uses right now, and a few new features that will be rolled out to the older models too, it doesn't feel like a massive update.

As I used the iPad Pro this week, I kept coming back to that LIDAR sensor. Not to use but as a concept. It’s a powerful and interesting sensor and Apple’s total control over software and hardware means that it “just works” to improve existing apps. But as powerful as it is, I’m not super sure a lot of users will be able to take advantage of it — it’s an extra thing they may not even use.
