Reviews for the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max
Apple returns with three new iPhones, just as it did last year. The biggest and heaviest among them is the iPhone 11 Pro Max, which aims to convince those who like big screens and even photographers with its high-quality triple rear-facing cameras. We put Apple's latest most expensive iPhone under the microscope in this live review.
Update: Live Review finished.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max was the best that Apple could cram into a smartphone in 2019 - the high-end screen, powerful speakers, upgraded processor all support the huge upgrades to the camera. However, this phone is really for the Apple fan or someone that really needs that extra lens or a touch more battery life - the iPhone 11 feels like it offers better value.

It doesn’t have 5G, but it still packs in a metric-ton of specs and hardware and this makes the iPhone 11 Pro Max still very much a force to be reckoned with. Add in significant price discounts now the iPhone 11 range is here, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max looks even better for savvy shoppers in 2021 and beyond…

As far as I’m concerned, the bigger the smartphone is, the better it comes to performing these tasks. Apple’s iPhone 12 Pro Max starts at $1,549 CAD for the 128GB version. The 256GB iteration costs $1,689 and the 512GB version costs $1959. The iPhone 12 Pro Max will be available on November 13th. Although it scored fairly well for readability, thanks to its handling of gamma and its smooth light transitions, the somewhat dark display overall took a bit of a toll on the iPhone 11 Pro Max’s overall score, particularly with respect to impact of its blue light filter. This said, more serious issues are its problems with color rendering and touch accuracy. On the plus side, the Apple device shows very few frame drops and has good control of motion blur; other high points were its control of aliasing and judder. But if you’re an insomniac who uses your phone to read or browse websites or watch videos in bed until you fall asleep, plan on manually controlling the display brightness.

I rarely get a chance to see an Apple device as they do not seem interested in UK journalists. So it is nice when a telecoms company offer one for review. It looks very smart and while it uses much the same system to turn on you are met with a wall of permissions just to get to the Home screen.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max is the closest Apple has come to the perfect smartphone. The cameras truly are a leap forward and put the company ahead of both Samsung and Google — at least for now. And the bright OLED display outshines most other phones. The iPhone 11 Pro Max also sports the fastest phone processor you can get in its A13 chip and the longest battery life we've seen from any iPhone.

Last, but certainly not the least, the powerful A13 Bionic chip orchestrating every single aspect of the device’s performance and the very reliable iOS 13 — both of which come along to offer a well-rounded package for its price.

For that reason, we think the standard iPhone 11 is the current pick of the range and will best suit most buyers. But if you are a photography aficionado or you have deep pockets and want the most cinematic smartphone experience available, the Pros are for you. It then comes down to a choice between the one with the much bigger screen, or the one with the slightly better screen.

There are some opportunities for future improvement, however, as high levels of noise continue to be an issue both outdoors, but particularly in lower light conditions. Ranking beneath the top 5 in our database, it’s not a top performer, but the iPhone 11 Pro Max remains a solid choice for those upgrading from an earlier iPhone, or switching over to Apple for the first time.

Deep Fusion could be something transformative down the line, but for now, it’s hard to measure its ability truly. Apple likes to hype its newest features, yet fails to add context to why they work well in certain scenarios. The good news is that the sum of this camera’s parts is a noticeable step forward. It’s still a game of catch-up for engineers in Cupertino, but a first-place finish is within sight if they push to help people capture images they’ve never seen before.

Previous Apple iPhone generations have always been among the best smartphones for imaging, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max is no different. It matches our top score for Video, recording video clips with good detail, a very wide dynamic range, and smooth stabilization in most circumstances. Its still image results also put it among the best, thanks to consistently good results from the primary camera, which is now accompanied by a very capable ultra-wide lens with one of the widest fields of view we have seen. Bokeh simulation mode and zoom performance at long range are not quite up with the very best, but if those areas are not top priorities, the new iPhone is an easy recommendation for any mobile image creator, especially those who are already invested in the iOS ecosystem.

What looks like a small update on the surface has actually turned out to be an impressive year for the iPhone line. The 11 Pro Max is a great phone thanks to tremendous battery life, a camera array that’s as versatile as anything else on the market and a big screen that makes it a joy to play games on. Of course, all that comes at a price – and this is a seriously expensive phone. Unless you simply must have an OLED display, ultrawide camera and a flashier finish, the regular iPhone 11 might just be a better buy.

The Pro models, on the other hand, I feel are proper and worthwhile generational upgrades. Users coming from an iPhone 8 (Plus) or earlier models can now upgrade to the new Pro models without having to worry about taking a hit to battery life. Meanwhile performance is self-explanatory, and the camera upgrades are very solid, albeit the wide-angle has some definite weaknesses. Still, the phones feel like very strong devices which notably improve upon the fundamentals, showing that even 12 years after the first iPhone, Apple is still capable of delivering meaningful upgrades to their high-end smartphones.

The expectations from the upcoming Google Pixel 4 series will also be sky-high, especially in the camera department. One area where no one can touch the iPhone 11 Pro / 11 Pro Max in is video performance, which is class-leading. iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max are great workhorses with enough horsepower to last almost two days — you won’t regret getting one.

While the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max is a very solid performer across all our technical categories and use cases, it doesn’t break any new ground. And while it was ahead of most of the Android models we tested in both Recording and Playback, it is behind both the earlier Apple iPhone XS Max and the Huawei Mate 20 X. Some of the reasons for that, such as reversed stereo channels when playing music, may be addressed in updates, so the actual performance gap between it and the XS Max may decrease over time. In terms of specific use cases, the 11 Pro Max was strongest when used for gaming, beating out all but the XS Max. For playing back movies and music, it was still among our top tested devices, but behind the Mate 20 X in addition to the XS Max. As far as recording, it was among our top scorers for both meetings and memos, although only mid-pack for videos.

How do I sum up the iPhone 11 Pro Max? I did that in the headline. There is no perfect phone, but if you want to buy the best available phone, go get the iPhone 11 Pro Max. Sure, Apple sells itself – quite successfully – as a premium brand, but that’s a lot of money to spend on any smartphone in 2019. You can argue the feature sets or philosophical control differences between Android and iOS all you like, and indeed this is the Internet, which was built for such matters. But in sheer price terms, the iPhone 11 Pro Max does not compare all that favourably to the premium Android market.

The iPhone 11 Pro takes what made the XS great and improves battery life and the camera. The iPhone has arguably taken back the crown for best mobile camera, though the pending Pixel 4 has us curious to see if Apple can keep the title for long. Aside from the tempting camera, there's little else here to lure Android fans away, but we still have to admit it's a great phone.

Is this the best iPhone ever? That’s easy: yes. Should you buy it? Well, that’s a mite trickier, largely on account of the price. It’s perhaps notable Apple now leads with trade-in prices on its website, perhaps attempting to soften the blow and lessen the chances of your bank account having a heart attack.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max starts at an eye-watering Rs. 1,09,900, which is a lot of money to spend on a phone. For most people, it would be hard to justify spending the premium over the iPhone 11 — or even leading Android smartphones such as the Galaxy S10 trio or the Galaxy Note 10 duo — but if you want the iPhone that offers the absolute best of everything, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is the one to get. Though we haven't tested it, the iPhone 11 Pro should offer almost exactly the same experience as the Pro Max in all departments other than battery life, and it's available starting at a slightly lower price.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max is the perfect illustration of Apple’s time-tested strategy of incrementally improving its devices year after year. No, it’s not a radical new design. And, aside from the cameras, Apple simply updated most components rather than radically overhauling them. But the result is a great, great phone. The iPhone 11 Pro Max brings phenomenal cameras, drool-worthy industrial design, exceptional battery life, a gorgeous screen and speedy chips that will keep the phone relevant and useable for many years to come. Yeah, it’s pricey. Plunking down more than $1,200 for a new phone always hurts. And yeah, the cheaper iPhone 11, which offers many of the same features, is a better deal for $300 less. But the better screen and the better cameras of the Pro Max make the premium well worth it. Plunk down your cash and rejoice — the iPhone 11 Max Pro is phenomenal!

Frankly, the new iPhone 11 Pro duo is expectedly great and even pulled off a couple of surprise moves here and there. We wished for a lot of things with the new generation and we got almost all of them. Sure, the prices are steep, and they skyrocket if you go for more gigabytes, but that's Apple and many will convince you the premium warranty, seamless and hassle-free experience, variety of apps, blazing performance, great camera skills and about 5 years of major updates are worth every penny. There are three reasons why Apple calls its more expensive iPhones the "Pro" iPhones: the luxurious stainless steel frame, the sharper and more colorful display, and the telephoto camera which is great for portraits. If you can live with a beautiful but slightly less vivid and slightly less sharp screen, and you don't lust after luxury or a telephoto camera for portraits, the iPhone 11 is a much more sensible and affordable choice.

The iPhone 11 series, with its wide-angle camera, gives a completely new take on what smartphone photography can achieve. Even as its cameras in general get better, it seems to be way ahead of competition when it comes to how the camera fuses with the powerful processor to do what other phones cannot. Some of this is magic, and hence is not really in the realm of realism, as we see with night mode where the images are way better than what the human eye can see. As this union of sensor and processor progresses and as the AI learns more about the kind of photos that are being clicked we will see the results get better, with more details and subtleties which are otherwise smudged on smartphone cameras.

Whether or not the iPhone 11 Pro or 11 Pro Max is worth it for you will depend on what smartphone you're currently using, as well as how important iOS is to you. This decision is complicated by the fact that the iPhone 11, Apple's successor to the iPhone XR, is nearly as good as the Pro series, with its only notable missing feature being a telephoto lens and its LCD display. With all that said, even with a few shortcomings, the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are set to go down as two of the best smartphones of the year. The iPhone 11 Pro starts at $1,379 CAD for 64GB variant, $1,589 for the 256GB model and the 512GB variant costs $1,859. Meanwhile, the 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max starts at $1519 for the 64GB version.
