Reviews for the Apple iPhone 12 Pro
The iPhone 12 Pro received a design refresh reminiscent of the old iPhone 5s. It features the latest technology the Californians have to offer, including 5G and Apple's new magnetic MagSafe feature. Find out whether or not it is worth switching in our review.

The iPhone 12 Pro is a serious step up from the iPhone 11 Pro, but that’s not who this flagship is really for. It’s for those who own older iPhones who are looking to upgrade, such as the iPhone XS, iPhone X or iPhone 8. You get a bigger display in a design that’s just as compact, cameras that deliver astonishingly good results (especially in low light) and 5G connectivity.

At first glance, the iPhone 12 Pro looks like a phone that's caught between two stools. With the same dimensions and chipset as the iPhone 12, it’s easy to wonder whether the Pro is worth the extra cash – especially when the iPhone 12 Pro Max is out there with a better camera sensor and longer battery life. There are some useful upgrades here – not least the camera, and the jump to 128GB of storage in the cheapest model, and it also comes in more muted, premium-looking colors. It's the more mature iPhone for sure – but it's tough to say it's got enough to encourage you to upgrade.

This is a great phone that’s easy to recommend. It takes the great 11 Pro, tweaks it and adds in a glorious new design that takes things to the next level. It’s a bit of a shame that the Pro Max has the potential for an even better camera though, and a high refresh rate screen would have been nice. Maybe next year.

The iPhone 12 Pro has everything going for it. There is little you can complain about except for the battery life. But placed between a cheaper alternative that also has a lot going for it and a bigger iteration that has everything going for it - your wallet is basically going to make the decision for you.

The iPhone 12 mini and 12 Pro Max are still open for debate as we didn’t have a chance to review them yet. If you’re looking for a small phone, the 12 mini looks like a perfect device, while if you’re looking for a max-sized phone and don’t mind the larger price-tag, the 12 Pro Max also certainly going to be a good option, especially if the new camera module hardware pans out.

The iPhone 12 Pro is one of those devices that's almost flawless. It is perfect. From design to performance, it has everything that your heart would desire and then there's a little extra thrown in to make the experience so much better. But it is pricey starting at Rs 1,19,900. For a lot of people, the iPhone 12 will be a more sensible choice if they want a near-perfect phone because "the perfect" comes with a premium. But if you don’t mind paying the premium and are looking for a compact phone to make lots of calls, watch movies, click uncomplicated but great-looking photos and browse the web in a speedy browser, the iPhone 12 Pro is the best you can get.

For the past 3 years, one of the phones in my pocket has always been an iPhone, but for reasons that aren't really common. The Apple Watch still is my smartwatch of choice, its video capabilities make it an ideal B Camera, and it continues to be my backup microphone for the Pocketnow Daily. It hasn't necessarily been my favorite phone to use, so it's the reason I always drifted to the smaller variant. Whatever Android phone I'd carry would mostly be a phablet, so one large phone was enough.

The iPhone 12 Pro isn’t even the top-flight model in Apple’s 2020 smartphone lineup, but still makes it into the upper echelons of our ranking and is for now the best iPhone in our database. Its Photo performance is solid across the board and a slight improvement over last year’s flagship 11 Pro Max in many areas. The new model shines in its video mode, which thanks to HLG Dolby Vision technology, offers a wider dynamic range than many rival phones. If tele-zooming is a high priority, the iPhone 12 Pro might not be your number one pick, but it’s an easy recommendation for any other mobile imaging application.

If money is burning a hole in your pocket and you're adamant on getting the best possible iPhone, I'd suggest also looking at the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Apple has used a larger primary camera sensor in this model, compared to the iPhone 12 Pro, and it also features sensor-shift stabilisation for the very first time in an iPhone, similar to what you get in premium mirrorless cameras. We just got our hands on this, and a full review is coming up soon.

On paper, the iPhone 12 Pro might appear to be a small upgrade over the iPhone 11 Pro, but each incremental update complements other changes and together they make for a wholesome package to uplift the user experience. The iPhone 12 Pro’s new design, big screen, class-leading imaging, and swift performance justify its premium price tag. It is a go-to iPhone in the iPhone 12 series, with something for everyone and without any compromises. It is easy to recommend to existing iPhone users who might be planning an upgrade. For Android users, it may be a new experience worth a try – you won’t be disappointed.

If you’re looking for the best iPhone on the market, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is it: it’s powerful, has the longest battery life on an iPhone we’ve tested in 2020 and the camera is top-notch. You'll need to be ready to carry the extra heft, as this is also the biggest iPhone of all time, and the cost isn't to be sniffed at, but we're adding an extra half star for all those iPhone fans that just want the best Apple can bring – the iPhone 12 Pro Max manages to do that rather well.

The Apple iPhone 12 Pro showed some small improvements over the older and larger iPhone 11 Pro Max, and managed to tie for third place in our overall standings with the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G. No improvement was so noteworthy as to take anyone’s breath away, however; and slight delays and visible artifacts when starting videos, but most especially a lack of touch smoothness, had an impact on the Apple’s score. That all said, the biggest issue remains the persistent yellow cast in every lighting condition and darker-than-average luminance that affects display readability, particularly at night.

The iPhone 12 Pro gives you double the storage in the regular iPhone 12, as well as its optical zoom and better auto-focus, and for me the $200 premium is well worth it. However, those who prefer a larger display should definitely check out the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. Overall, the iPhone 12 Pro beats every Android phone in its class in terms of performance and camera quality, even if it’s a step behind in battery life.

The iPhone 12 Pro is in a tricky space when it comes to choice. So this is a phone for those who want the iPhone 12 size but three cameras, or three cameras but not a phone as big as iPhone 12 Pro Max. Or want to get three cameras and don’t mind a larger screen, but can’t spend as much as the iPhone 12 Pro Max. This also means this is a compromise phone in itself as it is not a hero on its own. So you need to think that extra second before deciding on this one.

Ultimately, the iPhone 12 Pro, for me, is an incredible device, even though many of this year’s changes are external. After three years of the 6/7/8 design, followed by three more years of a very similar design in the X, Xs and 11, seeing a true change in industrial design feels fresh and cool, while staying true to what makes the iPhone look and feel like an iPhone. The iPhone 12 Pro is arguably the most premium-looking smartphone you can buy.

Before I wrap up, I want to quickly mention MagSafe — Apple's new wireless charging solution. The iPhone 12 Pro and others in the series are compatible with MagSafe wireless charging, which allows MagSafe chargers to be magnetically mounted on to the back of the iPhone. Apple's MagSafe charger supports up to 15W of fast wireless charging, when the charger is connected to Apple's 20W adapter (sold separately). It's still Qi-based charging, so you can still use it as a standard wireless charger, but that will work slower.

iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are a little different this year. They have the same screen size, same screen resolution, similar form factor, the same A14 Bionic; frankly, the similarities are so great it's easier to count the differences. And most of them are in software. Night mode Portrait mode photos are cool and the extra RAM could come in handy along with the new LiDAR sensor, but does it *really*? And does 5G iPhone make a difference? Does mmWave even matter? We talk about this and more to help you decide which of the two mainline iPhones are best before the launch of iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro.

We expected more from the iPhone 12 Pro, but it turned out a recycled iPhone 11 Pro. Not that Apple is forcing us to upgrade, but still. I hate that I'm recommending a phone I haven't handled yet (but will soon), but that instinct worked out with the iPad Air, so here's goes: the best iPhones this year are going to be the iPhone 12 mini (for most people) and this one, the iPhone 12 Pro (for camera buffs). With so many common components, and a huge number of iPhone owners preferring the smaller size of the 6/7/8 phones, the $699 iPhone 12 mini really feels like the mainstream winner this year. Meanwhile, the 12 Pro's 2x zoom does fall short of the 12 Pro Max's 2.5x, but it still fits extreme camera power into a reasonably sized body at a slightly lower price, earning it our Editors' Choice award.

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are the more sensible half of Apple’s new smartphone range for 2020, and that’s as it should be. At the risk of sounding a little dramatic, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are more than just phones -- they're the beginning of a new era for Apple. The company didn’t just launch a boatload of new hardware in mid-October: It also signaled a dramatic shift in the company's smartphone design, marked Apple's embrace of the world's growing 5G networks, and the revival of MagSafe (can't I saw that coming). Now, new iPhones are pretty big deals anyway, but the 12 and 12 Pro might be bigger deals than ever.
