Reviews for the Apple iPhone 12
The iPhone 12 is more angular than its predecessor and finally features 5G and an OLDED display. It is a lot lighter and slimmer than last year's model. Find out whether Apple has once again landed a big hit in our review.

Comparing two generations of smartphones iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, I had both positive emotions from the new generation and neutral ones. Frankly speaking, I did not find a big and significant difference between the two versions of devices in the iPhone line. Therefore, from my point of view, I see no reason to switch to a new generation of smartphones. For example, the appearance, with the exception of the reduced bangs and the location of the camera sensors, remained absolutely the same. But some interesting colors have been added, such as blue and pink on the new generation iPhone 13. I can also highlight the increased capacity of the built-in battery by 15%. But the rest of the features remained almost the same. Yes, perhaps the manufacturer will talk about better performance, but in fact, even the performance of the iPhone 12 will be enough for most tasks for a few more years, that’s for sure. The same applies to cameras, as you could see from the examples of the pictures, I did not reveal a strong difference between the two versions of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 smartphones.

I’m of two minds about the iPhone 12. There’s no question this is a great phone overall, and many of the changes Apple has made to its most popular iPhone are for the better. The new Super Retina XDR panel is a phenomenal improvement over the disappointing LCD panels in previous models at this price, even if it lacks a high refresh rate. And the fresh new design, MagSafe system and excellent dual-camera system all earn the iPhone 12 high marks. Some may want to wait for the iPhone 13 this fall. The new iPhone promises even faster performance, better cameras, Touch ID in the display, a smaller notch and 120Hz displays (at least on the Pro models). But nine months after its arrival, the iPhone 12 is still very much worth buying.

The iPhone 12 is the iPhone most people should get right now – it gives you a stunning new design, a fantastic new screen compared to the iPhone 11, excellent cameras with a few new tricks, plus 5G and the world's fastest phone processor for future-proofing. The cost is the only real stumbling block – at full price, it has stepped just over the line where we can safely say it represents unquestionably great value. It's wandered back into flagship price territory, really, but it doesn't offer the triple-lens camera system we'd expect at that level, or the extra storage. However, with the 20% or so discounts we're seeing, it comes back to the upper-mid-range level that it's more comfortable at, and our few objections definitely soften. As a phone, I love it – it's so slick, it's beautiful, and everything works so damn well.

It’s easy to dismiss the iPhone 12 as just 'more of the same', especially when you consider the new and compact iPhone 12 mini is also an option. However, 5G networks are rapidly rolling out across the globe, and the MagSafe addition could prove groundbreaking – these things, combined with an improved design and screen, mean the iPhone 12 will become more useful the longer you own it. It’s more expensive than last year’s iPhone 11, and it doesn’t come with a charger in the box; yes, there are environmental benefits to this, but you may need to factor buying a new charger into the cost of your new iPhone on top of the higher price.

When it comes to Display, the Apple iPhone 12 demonstrates some of the same flaws as its brand siblings, as well as many of their strengths. The main drawback to the device is a lack of brightness, especially in outdoor use cases. Whether you like it or not, its yellow cast is a typical iPhone display characteristic at this point. The overall score could have been higher with a better mark for smoothness. The iPhone 12 provides a pleasant experience when viewing HDR10 video content. The light and color transitions are very smooth. Overall, the device continues the Apple tradition of providing a satisfying user experience.

The Apple iPhone 12 mini is a very well-designed smartphone, with very effective software optimization that makes its battery the current leader in discharge efficiency across our entire database to date. That said, its very small battery does translate into significantly shorter autonomy than nearly all other devices tested thus far.

Apple’s latest iPhone launch introduced a quartet of new models — the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Each of them has its own selling point and the iPhone 12 happens to be the most balanced choice. Not too big, not too small, not too expensive, and not too feature-rich. You get the new design, 5 colors to pick from, and full compatibility with the new MagSafe accessories. There’s very little distinguishing between the iPhone 12 from the iPhone 12 Pro and most people will be just fine with the regular model. The iPhone 12 strikes all the right notes — great display, great hardware, pretty colors, standard-setting camera, fast Face ID. In fact, it’s kind of hard to recommend to spend the extra $200 for the iPhone 12 Pro. The regular 12 just covers everything you might need, minus the 2x telephoto lens. And that’s it…

The iPhone 12 is more than just a collection of benchmark numbers, however – more than the sum of its parts. It represents the accumulation of 13 years of development and it definitely shows. This is a very, very good phone. It may not be the pinnacle of what Apple offers – but it is better than the iPhone 11 and hits the sweet spot of size to features to value for iPhone fans. I expect it will be the most popular phone Apple sells this year and into next. However, for smartphone agnostics looking for the best all-rounder, there are many more alternatives. None have the incredible video capture quality of the iPhone 12 and its siblings, but our favourite mid-range Android phones – the Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 5 and OnePlus 8T – can compete on stills photography, features and design and come in at prices that undercut the iPhone 12 significantly.

The iPhone 12 is Apple’s mainstream offering, located below the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max in the company’s smartphone lineup. It comes with a dual camera on the back, a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display, and the same A14 processor used in all iPhone 12 series models. The iPhone 12 generation not only shares the same processor, the front camera setup for selfie shooting is identical across the entire line as well, featuring a 12 MP main sensor accompanied by a SL 3D sensor for depth estimation. Front camera video can be recorded at 4K resolution up to 60 frames per second.

As the saying goes, money talks. If you can find a significant deal on the iPhone 12, it may be enough to ease your indecision. Perhaps you're planning to switch carriers. If so, the wireless provider you'd like to move to may offer trade-in specials. It could offset a lot of the cost of a new phone. Also consider holding out until the iPhone 13 is announced. Then, prices for the iPhone 12 will certainly plummet. Depending on what the iPhone 13 turns out to be, getting a heavily discounted iPhone 12 may be a better option.

The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro are among the highest-rated phones CNET has ever reviewed. With features including 5G, a super-fast and powerful processor and fantastic rear cameras, the iPhone 12 line will likely be a top choice for anyone in need of a phone. But Apple released four iPhone 12 variants, including the iPhone 12 Pro Max and a whole new model called the iPhone 12 Mini. The company is splitting these devices into two distinct categories: the regular iPhone 12 line and the Pro models, aimed at people who love photography and have more money to spend. (One difference between the two? Only the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini come in Apple's new purple hue.)

So should you buy one or wait? I promise to explain.

Having recently looked at one of the previous models in the range 23-9-20, I now get my chance to test the latest version from Apple. Out of the box it seems to me to be rather chunky compared to other phones, this of course may help it to survive the odd drop, while the corners are shaved off the sides are a perfect sandwich shape. This is not the Max or the Mini it’s the iPhone 12.

There is one big difference with the iPhone 12 generation, though. It's the first time there are four new iPhones at once: the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. If you want to go small and reap the benefits of a lower price there's the Mini. If you want the biggest iPhone with the newest in iPhone cameras, get the Pro Max. But that leaves the 12 and 12 Pro which are similar (like basically-the-same-phone similar). That's not necessarily a bad thing.

There's a lot to like here, but the iPhone 12 is a bit of a mixed bag and for all its best features, there are a few underwhelming elements, such as the poor battery life and that god-awful notch. It's amazing that the world's most iconic smartphone still sports a long bar across the top of its display. It isn't surprising though; Apple does things when it's good and ready, not as we demand it.

In the recent past, iPhones with numbers but without a suffix (pro/plus) have been considered to be the lesser of the series, and come with compromises. The iPhone 12 breaks this trend by sporting an excellent display, very good cameras, and delivering a no-compromise performance. Yes, it is not super affordable, but it is perhaps the best value-for-money new iPhone out there and better than anything Android has to offer at that price point.

The iPhone 12 is another model we can add to a successful line of smartphones from Apple. It's arguably a pretty niche feature that'll only appeal to the most dedicated of photographers (of which I count myself a proud member), so as with the telephoto lens, the more casual of shooters among you will likely never give its absence a second thought. There is a chance that Apple could bring the feature to phones beyond the Pro line, but it seems more likely that it'll reserve it as a more elite feature to help justify the upgrade cost.

No, it's not like typing on a MacBook Air, but it's a big step up from the on-screen keyboard. It even has a small, finicky touchpad built in. Even better, when you fold the screen all the way down, as if closing the lid of a laptop, the keyboard fits perfectly inside, allowing you to carry it easily.

The iPhone 12 starts at Rs 79,990 (64GB variant) and for most people an expensive buy. It’s the iPhone that we expect most people to buy not just because the iPhone 12 Pro costs a good Rs 40,000 more because most might not see the benefit of spending that extra cash. The iPhone 12 is a phone that does everything consistently well. It has a lovely display, good cameras, blazing-fast performance and a battery life that won’t disappoint anyone. The iPhone 12 delivers solid photo performance and impressive video capabilities, especially for those who can take full advantage of the phone’s Dolby Vision HDR processing. In terms of pure imaging performance, there are a few competitors that offer similar or better output quality, sometimes at lower prices. However, users drawn to other parts of Apple’s value proposition or who are committed to iOS could find the iPhone 12 interesting. If zoom and portrait mode performance aren’t priorities for you, the iPhone 12 gives essentially all the bang of the iPhone 12 Pro for fewer bucks.

However, if you own an iPhone 11, resist skipping to the iPhone 12 quickly. Even though it’s got all those flashy new features and design, I think it’s not worth the upgrade.

But while all this is just fine for iPhone 12, the story gets worse for first time iPhone users. If iPhone 12 is your first-ever iPhone, you will have to pay more to get a charging brick since you just get a Type-C to Lightning cable inside the box, something that seems like a formality at this point. Even worse is those old iPhone users will have to stick with their old charging brick and lightning cable. To use the new cable you would have to buy a type-C adapter. You’re lucky if you already have one.

This year, the iPhone 12 is where Apple's most substantial upgrade budget went to. It loses the "budget-iPhone" image, being upgraded to an OLED display, a fully tricked out camera system and practicaly every feature, hardware and software found on the more expensive iPhone 12 Pro. Our testing reveals that the iPhone 12 manages to once again take the lead in performance, while also delivering one of the best imaging experience. What you lose in comparison to the iPhone 12 Pro is a telephoto lens, the LiDAR sensor and the fact that you get 2GB RAM less. Despite all of that, the iPhone 12 manages be a great performer, being the most value for money iPhone for this year.

The iPhone 12 might not be a perfect phone, but it is a darn good one. For an entry price of $799 and no significant battery trade-offs like the iPhone 12 Mini, it’s also possibly the best for most buyers looking to pick one from Apple’s 2020 line-up.

The 12 Pro Max, however, gets some interesting camera improvements over the standard Pro. A 47% larger image sensor on the Pro Max means the phone captures more light in both normal and low-light settings, making colors appear more vibrant and images look clearer.

The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro are amazing phones, but we only have half the picture right now. There's also the iPhone 12 Mini (which I'm particularly excited about, given its size and price) and the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which maxes out the size of the phone's display and offers camera improvements that none of the other iPhones 12 have. But that's just what we know based on the specs. We'll have to wait until November to see how they work out in reality.

Discreetly but surely, Apple improves the audio quality of its iPhone series. While no new earth-shattering audio technology is advertised, nearly every sub-score is higher than the previous generation’s — especially in recording, where the iPhone 12 performed consistently better than its predecessor. Apart from certain audio and user artifacts, the iPhone 12 is a solid performer across all our tested attributes and use cases, with a great timbre performance for both playback and recording, powerful dynamics, immersive and realistic spatial attributes, highly satisfying volume attributes, and natural background renderings.

Honestly, there are no alternatives to the iPhone 12 unless you want the iPhone 12 Mini, which has a smaller 5.4-inch screen size and a price tag of Rs 69,900. I personally love the iPhone 12 Mini but I wouldn’t buy it purely because it costs less than the iPhone 12. I have an affinity for small phones and I find them easier to use. That said, the iPhone 12 is NOT a big phone and there are enough reasons to buy Apple’s ‘most complete iPhone’ ever made.

It’s easy to dismiss the iPhone 12 as just 'more of the same', especially when you consider the new and compact iPhone 12 mini is on its way. However, 5G networks are rapidly rolling out across the globe, and the MagSafe addition could prove groundbreaking – these things, combined with an improved design and screen, mean the iPhone 12 will become more useful the longer you own it. However, it’s more expensive than last year’s iPhone 11, and it doesn’t come with a charger in the box; yes, there are environmental benefits to this, but you may need to factor buying a new charger into the cost of your new iPhone on top of the higher price.

I have no doubt that the iPhone 12 is a excellent phone. It does everything well. Then there is value that longevity brings. The iPhones are supported longer with software updates. Their performance doesn’t dip as alarmingly as an Android phone’s after a year or two. I do wish it had more storage. 64GB feels low in a Rs 79,900 phone. I also wish users wouldn’t have to spend extra on a separate charger. And I hope Apple improves the notification shade and centre in the iOS 15.

In fact, we’d go as far as to say that if you think you can live without the telephoto camera (and most people probably can), you should save yourself the £150-£200 (depending on which configuration you go for) and get the 12 ahead of the Pro. Lisa Gade reviews the iPhone 12—it might not have “Pro” in the name, but it’s every bit a high end Apple phone. This year the non-Pro iPhone gets a 6.1” OLED Super Retina XDR display, an aluminum frame with ceramic glass over the display, 5G, dual rear 12MP cameras with night mode support on both, Face ID, the Apple A14 Bionic CPU with 4GB RAM, and your choice of 64, 128 or 256GB storage. It’s available on most carriers as well as unlocked, and comes in 5 colors. The 5.4” iPhone 12 Mini will arrive in November, for those who like this phone but want it smaller.

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are the more sensible half of Apple’s new smartphone range for 2020, and that’s as it should be. Apple wisely chose to upgrade all aspects of the iPhone in addition to the adding 5G as a hedge against any backlash the company may have faced from customers. Now, instead of people wondering why they bought a phone with 5G that’s more or less what they can get out of 4G LTE, customers will get a completely overhauled experience. And one that’s certainly worth picking up if you’ve got an iPhone XS or older.

No, I couldn't help but dwell on more practical matters, like just how similar these two phones really are. The gap between a "regular" iPhone and a Pro iPhone has grown smaller than ever. That's great news for anyone who doesn't want to spend more for a smartphone than they have to, but it also means deciding between the two is no easy feat.
