Owners of last year’s iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are arguably in the trickiest spot. Last year’s phones are still great, but they are now outdated in some ways because they don’t support Apple Intelligence. It remains to be seen how useful and how much of a difference Apple Intelligence will make, so I won’t run out to upgrade just yet. For now, it’s best to adopt a wait-and-see approach. If you have an older iPhone – iPhone 14 series or older – the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus represent a fantastic opportunity to upgrade. Even without Apple Intelligence, they are solid phones, and upgrading you gets you the convenience of USB-C charging. The ability to simplify your charging cables should not be overlooked.

Unless you’re primarily chasing battery life, whether or not you’ll be impressed by the Apple iPhone 16 Plus comes down to your expectations in terms of the larger screen. If you’re more interested in the large screen than the larger battery then proceed with caution, as the seemingly big jump from 6.1 to 6.7 inches might not offer the benefits you’re hoping for. If you’ve got 20/20 vision and you’re sticking with the default display settings, you won’t actually see much more on the 16 Plus compared to the standard 16. An extra two lines of text doesn’t seem worth the trouble, especially when images aren’t larger. At first, I was disappointed with the Plus, but if your vision isn’t perfect (like mine) and you’re diving into the display settings to compensate, a plus-sized iPhone starts to look more attractive.

If you own an older iPhone model then the 16 Plus is worth considering as its new Camera Control button could change the way you shoot. You can swipe and press to adjust a wide range of camera settings (such as Depth, Tone and Exposure) in a more tactile way than by tapping and swiping icons on a screen. Vloggers will also find the improved sound recording tools attractive as they won’t always have to use a third party wireless mic to improve their audio production values. You could save money by buying an iPhone 16, but the 16 Plus’s larger display provides a more effective viewing experience (and its great to show off the results of a shoot to a model while you’re on a shoot as it will give them confidence in the quality of image that the iPhone is capturing.)

Let’s start with the good things. The value proposition with the iPhone 16 Plus is the best since the first iPhone Plus, back in 2021. That’s because of the chip. My guess is this is an anomaly forced by Apple Intelligence. Don’t be surprised if we see next year’s iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max get an A19 Pro while the iPhone 17 and 17 Plus remain on an A18. Beyond that, I prefer how this phone looks to the Pro Max, and it’s lighter and cheaper. In fact, $200/£200 cheaper than the equivalent Pro Max – and $300/£300 less for the entry-level device if you can put up with 128GB of storage. (The Pro Max starts at 256GB.) The flip side is that 60Hz display and the lack of the 5x telephoto. Which leads me to a weird conclusion: I like this iPhone. I’d happily use it as a daily driver. But I’m not sure I’d buy one.

The iPhone 16 raises the bar for what vanilla iPhone models could do. The iPhone 16 (and 16 Plus) gets an A18 chip, which promises superior performance compared to Android flagships in the market. The cameras are solid, and you get two new buttons - Action and Camera Control. The battery backup is impressive, and the build quality is top-notch. It also gets an IP68 rating for peace of mind and is a fantastic device for high-graphics gaming in its latest avatar. The display quality is superb. Of course, a few things could be improved, like slow charging and 60Hz refresh rate at this price point, making this look slightly out of place compared to Android flagships. So, who should buy it? If you purchased an iPhone 15 (Review) or 15 Plus last year, you can give this a miss.

The iPhone 16 Plus delivers exceptional performance with its A18 chipset, Camera Control, and brilliant display. These same features also place it close to the Pro Max for the first time in years, and it offers almost everything people want from a large-screen iPhone at a much more affordable price.

The iPhone 16 Plus is excellent, and I have no problem recommending it, except I’m not entirely sure who I’m recommending it to. The problem is that the compromises you’re going to make, ranging from the overall size and weight to the low refresh rate screen, may mean it’s either wiser to spend less and get the also excellent iPhone 16 or spend more and get the bigger, better iPhone 16 Pro Max. It’s frustrating that I don’t seem to be getting longer battery life than I would on the iPhone 16. The cameras and processor are the same, and the screen is bigger, but still lacking what I’d consider almost essential features in 2024. I want to reiterate the fact that the iPhone 16 Plus has been brilliant, but unless you’re absolutely desperate for a bigger screen, the iPhone 16 is cheaper and otherwise identical.

This is the iPhone 16 Plus, the larger variant of Apple's base models, and what I've spent the last two years calling the perfect work horse. Sure, I spend my time making video reviews today, but I'm not sure if you've noticed that my content mostly focuses on just how useful a product is. We live in a time when you can fold your RAZR or Z Flip to use it like a camcorder, or prop your Pixel 9 Pro fold on its screen to use the other half to take a photo.. Cause yeah, I can see all of you not worrying about placing an $1800 phone carelessly over concrete just for that perfect shot, right? You get where I'm going.

This is a good year for the regular iPhones. With the Action Button, Camera Control, and substantial upgrades to the processor and camera, it can be argued that they get all, if not most, of the features of the Pro iPhones that users would want. Shoppers who shop with their heads instead of their hearts will inevitably arrive at the conclusion that the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are the phones to buy.

After spending considerable time with the iPhone 16 Plus, I can confidently say it’s a powerhouse of a device. Its performance, especially with the A18 Bionic chip, is blazing fast, and the improvements in the camera system make it one of the best options for mobile photography. The display is gorgeous, the battery life holds up well, and iOS 18 brings useful new features that enhance the user experience. However, it’s not without its shortcomings. The phone’s size can make one-handed use challenging, the bezels feel a bit outdated, and charging speeds don’t quite match up to some of its competitors. Still, these issues are minor in the grand scheme of things.

Smartphones, in general, are now mature tech. Year after year we see that the upgrades have become incremental. In a way, the iPhone 16 is also an incremental update. I wish it had a faster screen. But it doesn't. The design, although boring, is solid. And in the rest of the components, the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus are a mix of everything old but gold and some new bits. Of the new bits, the action button is going to be useful to most users. At the same time the Camera Control button is not going to be useful to most users. Yet, the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus are solid phones. They are not the phones that iPhone 14 or the iPhone 15 users should move to, but they are perfect for anyone looking to upgrade to from iPhone 13 or older.

The iPhone 16 Plus is a great phone, and it checks a lot of boxes for various users. Here’s a quick and simple breakdown to help you decide whether this phone is right for you. I’ve been testing the Apple Intelligence-ready iPhone 16 Plus for two weeks, and it’s one of the best smartphones you can buy. Apple’s larger version of the base iPhone 16 doesn’t come with an exclusive set of camera or performance features to entice you to buy it over the smaller version; instead, it has a bigger screen and a bigger battery, two features that improve the fundamental iPhone 16 experience to the point where this should be the default iPhone to consider when it’s time to upgrade.

Usually, the 'vanilla' iPhone is the Pro's slightly less attractive alternative, partly because of the downgraded camera spec and partly because usually it features the previous year's Pro chip while the Pro gets a shiny new processor. This year, however, the iPhone 16 Plus is my iPhone of choice, over the Pro model. Yes, the camera could be better (come on, Apple, put macro in all your models already), and the GPU is slightly slower, but it's close enough for anyone who's not a content creation professional.

Although an improvement over last year's iPhone 15 Plus, the 16 Plus fails to impress in some key areas. We appreciate the addition of the Action Button and the Camera Control key as well as the significant improvement in the chip department. Still, those are hardly value-adding features for the mass user. At least not in a big way. Battery life, seems to be once again the Plus' key selling point and this year, it's chart-topping. The device still lacks a telephoto camera, and the ultrawide, although improved, is not amazing. The display is only 60Hz for yet another year and proper fast-charging technology has yet to reach Apple's labs. Those are all features you can find in all modern smartphones. The modest upgrades can't build a strong case for getting the 16 Plus instead of the 15 Plus, for example or even the 15 Pro Max.

Almost everything the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus does, they do very well. It has all the features most people need every day and a few more that are usually reserved for Apple’s Pro lineup. The iPhone 16 Pro still has more features, but they’ve ventured into the niche arena, addressing the needs of high-end users, such as video producers and professional content creators. You should read our iPhone 16 Pro review to learn more–what you’ll probably figure out that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus have all that you need.

Frankly speaking, if you’re coming from an iPhone newer than the iPhone 13 series, there’s no definitive feature or reason to upgrade unless you want to hold out for what Apple brings with Apple Intelligence over the next year or your phone is on its last legs. But, I preface this by saying one thing—the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus offer one of the best updates to the non-Pro iPhones since the 12 series, and I think that anyone buying it right now won’t find much to complain about. The improved battery life, refined camera system, and dependable performance make the 16 Plus a reliable daily driver, even without the cutting-edge AI features.

The iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16 don’t do anything particularly special this year. In fact, it’s determinedly mixed in many areas. The design of the camera housing has changed, which I don’t think does it any favours, and while the camera button is great in the way it works, I think its positioning could be improved. The display, meanwhile, really needs to move away from 60Hz because currently, Apple is shortchanging its customers. However, the faster chipset and better battery life are significant steps forward, and Apple Intelligence (when it arrives) may well prove another reason to upgrade from the iPhone 15 and earlier models, since those won’t support it.

The iPhone 16 Plus starts at $899 for the base 8/128GB model. There's little to no reason to upgrade if you already own an iPhone 15 Plus (or even the iPhone 14 Plus) device. The biggest changes are the Camera Control button and the new A18 chipset, but we don't think these can justify the switch. Of course, Apple Intelligence is another reason to hop on the iPhone 16 series train, but at the moment its features are still either in beta or coming soon. Now, if you're coming from an older iPhone device and want to get a taste of all the new AI features, the Camera Control button, and have some power on tap without paying the Pro Max price, the iPhone 16 Plus could be a nice alternative.

I hope I’ve been able to give you some guidance on whether you should choose an iPhone 16, an iPhone 16 Plus or to go with one of the more expensive Pro models. It really comes down to whether you need/want the high-end camera features of the more Pro variants, or demand a 120Hz display. If not, save yourself between $200 and $400 by getting one of the more affordable models. And I’m impressed enough with the AI capabilities in the iPhone 16 that you might even consider upgrading from its immediate predecessor — something that’s almost never true. If you stick with your iPhone 15, you’ll never get Apple Intelligence. Just something to think about.

With the iPhone 16, Apple has almost closed the gap between its best phone for most people and the one intended for the most demanding power users. It’s a relief to not pine for what could be coming on the iPhone 17 since a lot of the new features on the iPhone 16 Pro are already here. And while some of them will require time to master, it’s great that they’re on the iPhone 16 at all. There are some Pro features you’ll still have to spend more for, like ProRAW photos, ProRES video, a 120Hz display, a 5x telephoto camera and multi-track recording in Voice Memos. But those are luxuries not everyone needs. For this reason, the regular iPhone will likely suit your needs just fine, since splurging on the high-end model has become more of an indulgence than a necessity.

The iPhone 16 Plus is a great device. Compared to its predecessor, it has received some fantastic new upgrades, such as a new design, faster chipset, Apple Intelligence, camera button, and more. These changes are designed to further elevate the user experience. However, these features new are also in the base iPhone 16 model and the iPhone 16 Plus didn’t receive anything more than that, which is a disappointment. Its display is still running on a 60Hz refresh rate, which is not acceptable for a device launching in 2024 at this price range. Considering all these aspects of this smartphone, we can’t recommend the iPhone 16 Plus.

There's one thing I haven't mentioned yet in this review, and that's Apple Intelligence, the suite of artificial intelligence tools scattered across iOS 18. That's because the bulk of the AI experience, which includes a revamped Siri, call recording, and text generation, won't be readily available until October, unless you download the iOS 18.1 public beta today. That's to say, you shouldn't buy the iPhone 16 for its AI capabilities -- not yet, at least. Until the software is official, I'll continue to evaluate the iPhone 16 for what it is and keep you posted on how it fares with battery life, video-capturing, day-to-day performance, and more.

For the battery life increase alone, yes, the entry-level iPhone 16 models are worth it, but I recommend the iPhone 16 Plus even more. Battery life anxiety is real. Nothing is worse than wondering if I'll be able to order an Uber at the end of the night because I'm only at 20%. With the iPhone 16 Plus, however, lasting nearly 19 hours on a single charge, its power efficiency makes it worth every single penny. On top of that, there's a new Camera Control button, a tougher display, improved zoom up to 2X, the inheritance of the Action Button, and three stunning new colors (Ultramarine, Pink, and Teal).

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are better than the previous installment inside and out, as to be expected. But their updated design and the versatility brought by the addition of the action and camera buttons should make even owners of last year’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus consider trading in. The above conclusion also applies to the performance improvements brought by the A18 chip and the impending arrival of Apple Intelligence in the coming weeks. The elaborate set of generative AI tools baked into iOS is all but guaranteed to make a difference in the daily routine of every iPhone 16 user — from a first-time adopter to a longtime follower. As usual, the iPhone 16 is the one to get if you prioritize compactness and ergonomics over everything else.

Overall, reviewers see the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus as solid upgrades, particularly for those coming from older models. The Verge suggests it’s a good year to upgrade, especially for those holding onto older iPhones. TechRadar recommends the upgrade for anyone with an iPhone 14 Plus or older. Mashable particularly praises the iPhone 16 Plus, suggesting it might be a better buy than the iPhone 16 Pro for many users. As a content creator and a photographer, I feel these new iPhones are tailor-made for me. I’ve seen people online saying that it’s not a huge upgrade from the 14 Pro, which sure, the 14 Pro is an amazing phone and offered a nice jump up in camera quality at the time and still has very capable photography optics. However, it’s still missing much of the pro software and video support that Apple has added over the past two generations. Things like LOG, Audio Mix, the Fusion camera and Camera Controls are game chargers for creators. I never want to use an iPhone without dedicated camera buttons again. Even for capturing behind-the-scenes footage, the iPhone 16 proves to be worth the upgrade.

It’s a good year for the basic iPhones, and that hasn’t been the case over the past few generations. To be sure, there’s nothing groundbreaking here, and certainly nothing you should trade in your iPhone 15 for. But if you’ve been on the fence for a while about upgrading from an 11 or 12, then I think this is the year to go for it. You’ll get a couple of new buttons to play with, and who knows, maybe you’ll get along better with the Camera Control than I did.

The days of upgrading your phone every year for the one big new feature are far behind us, and the iPhone 16 is proof. And that's not a bad thing. Instead, the iPhone 16 is about how all the small things come together to result in a phone that feels faster, more intuitive and more customizable than years past. I wouldn't recommend buying the iPhone 16 just for the Camera Control button or the better ultrawide camera. But when you think about how the Camera Control key, the Action button and the Dynamic Island come together, along with the camera and battery improvements Apple has made over the last several years, you have a compelling upgrade for someone coming from an older phone.

If you were to stumble upon an iPhone 16 Plus from the front, looking directly at the screen, I'd hedge that you might think it's the 15 Plus or even the 14 Plus. It sticks with being the big-screen iPhone that doesn't cost an arm or leg, offers fast performance, and has two excellent cameras. When you flip it over, though, or examine the left or right sides, the story begins to change. That's what I did when I first saw the iPhone 16 Plus in the hands-on area shortly after Apple's "It's Glowtime." event concluded. It's still a large 6.7-inch iPhone with a vibrant OLED display and the Dynamic Island at the top for cool Live Activities and unlocking with Face ID.

The iPhone 16 Plus starts at $899 for the base 8/128GB model. You'll need to wait a bit longer for the full review and final verdict, but what we can say now is that if you own a previous generation such as the iPhone 15 Plus or even the iPhone 14 Plus, there's little to no reason to upgrade and get the new one. Now, if you want to get a taste of iOS or looking to switch from Android, but don't want to pay the Pro Max premium price, the iPhone 16 Plus could be a nice alternative and a gateway to the Apple ecosystem. That being said, the gap to the Pro devices has grown larger with these new models, and we're not sure the bigger 6.7-inch screen justifies going for the Plus instead of the vanilla iPhone 16, which is $200 cheaper.
