Reviews for the Apple iPhone XR
Apple positions the iPhone XR between the two XS models’ size-wise but equips the device with a lower resolution LCD display and only a single rear-facing camera. There are a few other minor drawbacks too, but does the XR do enough to be crowned the best overall iPhone? Read on to find out. Update: Review completed.

Sure, the iPhone XR doesn't offer a screen or camera setup that's as good as the other Face ID iPhones, but that's the compromise with a more affordable handset. Many will be perfectly happy with what's on offer, especially as there's no compromise in power. For those who want Apple's Face ID design inside a colourful shell without spending a fortune, this iPhone could be for you if the iPhone 11 is out of budget. However, if you're not fussed by Face ID, it's definitely worth looking at the iPhone SE (2022).

The iPhone XR delivers a full 2018 iPhone experience for a great price. It deserves to stand outside of the shadow of the iPhone XS, offering a finely balanced experience that takes most that phone's premium feel, and throwing in a couple of tricks of its own.

The iPhone XR might sit at the bottom of the Face ID iPhone range, but that's not to say it should be overlooked. It's still got a powerful processor, large screen and a great camera. There are a couple of compromises compared to the iPhone 12 series - it has a slightly lower waterproof rating, an LCD display rather than OLED, and just the one camera lens rather than a pair but otherwise, it offers a lot. It sits above the iPhone SE (2020) and just underneath the standard iPhone 11, but what's it like to live with? Read on to find out.

The iPhone XR has shockingly few trade-offs compared to pricier iPhones. You get a big and bright display, very good cameras, fast performance and long battery life for a very affordable price. Overall, we prefer the newer iPhone 12 because of its better cameras, OLED display and 5G, but if you're on a budget you should be very happy with the iPhone XR.

Our iPhone SE vs iPhone XR face-off has more details, but here's the gist if you're on the fence between these two phones. The cheaper $399 iPhone SE is faster, thanks to its A13 Bionic processor, and that same chip enables several photography features, including Portrait mode for the rear and front cameras and Smart HDR. The iPhone XR makes due with an older A12 Bionic chip.

While iPhone XR has now evolved into the 2019 iPhone 11, the older model offers plenty of value at the cheaper £629 price. The cheaper priced model still offers speedy performance and the impressive photography capabilities we’ve come to expect from Apple’s phones.

The iPhone XR bought Face ID to the masses. We’re sure people will continue to rebel against the lack of Home button, but eventually we expect them to come round and embrace the larger screen, Portrait mode (front and back), animoji and memoji. It's the older generation but at a reduced price it's still an excellent choice for your next iPhone.

There are annoyances here and there – no fast charger in the box, Face ID isn’t as good as Touch ID, and then there’s the yearly merry-go-round of finding which dongle you need for simple things like plugging in a pair of wired headphones – a standard situation for Apple fans these days. Ultimately, though, this is perhaps the best iPhone option of 2018. While it’s not cheap when compared to what the Android market has to offer, if you’re a diehard Apple fan then the notion of switching sides means this will seem reasonably-priced when compared to the company’s other iPhones this year – yet it never feels like you’re missing out by choosing the XR.

The iPhone XR is the most impressive of all the iPhones launched in 2018. Not because of the strength of the spec – the iPhone XS is slightly ahead in a lot of areas – but what you're 'saving' by going for this model far outweighs what you're losing. Not only does the XR boast better battery life, you also have the option of a 128GB version, which should cater for most people, and it’s a size that isn’t available for the XS or XS Max. It not only stacks up well against its family members, it displays a level of musicality that rivals brands can only dream of. A smart choice for those who want a bite of the Apple for a relatively affordable price.

I haven't been this excited about an iPhone model in years. The iPhone XR is built to be the best everyday phone engine in Apple's iPhone lineup, based on things I value: price, battery, speed and key features like the camera. The iPhone XR is the sensible car with the good gas mileage, but with a supercharged engine under the hood and an understated spoiler on the trunk -- and I love that. It's what more Apple products should shoot for. It's a good size and, very nearly, a perfect phone for its price.

So, the common running theme throughout my experience with the Apple iPhone XR was lots of trust in getting things I wanted to get done, with amazing efficiency. This is the reason why despite the few shortcomings I find in hardware and software, I recommend you buy the iPhone XR. If you’re one who doesn’t like things getting in the way of a seamless user experience, if you’re one who likes to keep your phones for multiple years, the iPhone is THE phone for you and among the variants, I recommend the iPhone XR for the aforementioned reasons. The price cut helps.

Similarly, I think the iPhone XR is also priced a tad too high, and if you’re not entrenched in the iOS ecosystem, there are better value alternatives. I count myself among those who wouldn’t buy a smartphone at this price, and certainly not if it does compromise on some features. In a way this might be the rationale of more users, and that’s probably why the iPhone XR has seen less demand than anticipated. With hindsight, I see now what I might have been wrong in thinking the XR would be the most popular model of this generation, as it’s not priced low enough to convince users to drop down from what they see as the better long-term investment of an XS variant. That is if they would buy a new iPhone at all this generation, which with the ever increasing prices, is an ever increasingly hard choice to make.

Of course, when you buy official you always pay a premium – doubly so when it's an Apple product. Sure, £45 is a lot of cash, but this is a case unlike any other we've seen in this category, and Apple's claim that the material used won't discolour over time could mean this is a worthwhile purchase – assuming that boast is true, of course. For now, all we can say is that this is a well-made case which is worth a look if you're keen to show off your phone's design and don't want rugged, all-round protection.

So where does all that leave the camera of the iPhone XR? Well, in our opinion, it is good enough to stand alongside the XS and XS Max, and every bit as good if you are ready to give up on the optical zoom and a few Portrait Lighting options. $250 is either a lot of money to save for minimal compromise, or a small premium to pay for dual cameras, a markedly improved display, and the iPhone XS’ other advantages. Where you fall on that will depend on how addicted to your smartphone you actually are, and how you prioritize having the very bleeding-edge of devices. The iPhone XR is a great Apple iPhone that is priced $250 and $350 less than the flagship XS models. However, cellular signal strength is important to me and I am likely going to jump to the iPhone XS at the end of November to get back to the form factor I fell in love with earlier this year.

The iPhone XR sports Apple's fastest processor yet, the A12 Bionic chip and comes with a near-bezel-less design. However minor things like the lack of an HD display, no dual camera and a terribly limited portrait mode makes the smartphone feel like an unnecessarily overpriced device.

The iPhone XR delivers a full 2018 iPhone experience for a great price. It deserves to stand outside of the shadow of the iPhone XS, offering a finely balanced experience that takes most that phone's premium feel, and throwing in a couple of tricks of its own.

With smartphone prices (not just iPhone prices) consistently going up, it’s good to know that there’s still a reasonably priced iPhone we can turn to. Not exactly cheap, the $750 Apple is asking for the iPhone XR is still in expensive territory, but when you consider the rest of the landscape, and the fact that the XR is so full-featured, it’s hard to say no.

Really, the biggest sacrifices you'll need to make with an iPhone XR are a less-vibrant screen than you'd get from an OLED-based iPhones and a less-extensive bag of photographic tricks than you might enjoy with a dual-lens model. If those features aren't all that important to you, by all means enjoy the equal processing power, longer battery life and lower price tag that the iPhone XR has to offer.

If you’re in the market for a new iPhone, the XR is a no-brainer. It’s speedy, has an excellent battery life and packs a fantastic camera. If you’re the type of person who wants the best of the best, you’ll want to opt for the XS or XS Max.

Sure, the iPhone XR doesn't offer a screen or camera setup that's as good as the top-of-the-range, but that's the play in having a more affordable handset. Besides, many will be perfectly happy with what's on offer, especially as there's no compromise in power.

Of the three iPhones launched in 2018, the iPhone XR is the most impressive of the lot. Not because of the strength of the spec – the iPhone XS is slightly ahead in a lot of areas – but what you're 'saving' by going for this model far outweighs what you're losing. A multitude of colors, very good battery life and a lower price? If you want a new iPhone, check this one out first.

I have no doubt that the iPhone XR will sell in great numbers. These numbers are likely going to come from consumers who have been waiting for a cheaper iPhone to hit the market. I think the iPhone XR is for people who didn't want to spend $1000 on the iPhone X last year. It's for people who don't want to spend over Rs 1 lakh on an iPhone this year. And these consumers will not be disappointed, because the XR is a terrific iPhone for the masses. It may not be as ornamental as the XS and XS Max, but Apple has done well to make sure the XR doesn't compromise on features that matter.

These days, lots of smartphone makers are trying to offer more for less, and Apple is no exception. Its new iPhone XR features a lot of what makes the more premium XS and XS Max special, squeezed into a glass-and-metal package that costs significantly less. This is, as you would expect, an exercise in compromise: the XR retains the high-performance A12 chipset and delivers the best battery life we’ve ever seen in an iPhone in some time. But the Liquid Retina display and single camera might not be up to snuff for everyone. That said, everything Apple offers here is much, much better than just “good enough.” The XR is the iPhone we’d recommend to most people.

And then, of course, there are the colours. The Product Red iPhone XR is one of the best looking gadgets in recent memory; the glass back and aluminium sides absolutely pop. The yellow and blue iPhone XRs are just as pretty. I’m not sold on "coral", but to each their own. Even the conservative white is blindingly bright. These colours alone will attract many iPhone fans to the XR over the XS, and they’ll be getting the best bang for their buck of any iPhone in the 2018 lineup.

The iPhone XR goes on sale on Oct. 26, and you can preorder the phone starting Friday. Despite coming out a month after the iPhone XS and XS Max, the XR is the 2018 iPhone most of you should pay the closest attention to before deciding to buy a new phone this year.

My guess is, much like how it seemed to steal the show at Apple's Sept. 12 event, the XR will end up being the hit of the iPhone bunch, as well. Unless you're totally sold on the mega-size screen of the XS Max, or you can't live without 2X optical zoom in the XS cameras, you should hold off on any decisions until then.

Like the other two new iPhone models, the iPhone XR will be available with dual-SIM support in India, using an eSIM, which is offered by Airtel and Jio as of now. The iPhone XR will start shipping next month, well after the more expensive iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, which become available in India on September 28, though the dual-SIM functionality may arrive at a later stage via a software update, as per Apple’s website.

It may be the least sensational of Apple's three new iPhones for 2018 when you scrutinize the specs, but the iPhone XR (pronounced "ten-R") is absolutely the most interesting -- and that has nothing to do with its comparatively cheaper price. The iPhone XR starts at $749, £749 and AU$1,229 for the 64GB version (see the pricing and spec chart below for all the nitty gritty).
