If you're looking for a tablet that's lightweight and can easily switch into a capable workstation, the CM3 is a strong contender. As a tablet, its light and attractive design make it easy to handle while sitting on the couch browsing the web or doodling the world around you. As a laptop, it can easily handle tasks like working in Google Docs or Sheets, jumping into video calls throughout the day, and getting through your pile of daily emails. Its excellent battery life makes it a great on-the-go convertible tablet, too, since you won't have to lug your charger along for every trip. And at $380, it's not nearly as expensive as Apple's iPad or even the Surface Book Go 2. That discount comes with some sacrifices, though. The CM3's performance can be choppy when dealing with more than singular tasks, its keyboard isn't as sturdy as you'd expect, and the display makes it difficult to use more than one window at a time. Even something like Lenovo’s Chromebook Duet, which also has a slow processor and a flimsy keyboard, is a more attractive option simply because it’s possible to find for about $100 cheaper.

If we go all the way back to CES 2020, you’ll remember Lenovo debuting the Chromebook Duet: a new take on the affordable Chromebook tablet formula that we knew right away would be a hit. It was the right size, had the right looks, and it had a great screen. Additionally, all the stuff you needed to use it as a tablet and as a laptop all came in the box for a very small asking price. Yeah, we knew it wouldn’t be crazy fast, but the price made up for that and overall, it quickly became clear that Lenovo had put together what many people want in a Chromebook: aesthetics, usability, and a great price.

What's nice about the Asus Chromebook Detachable CM3 is that you're getting a complete package under $400. It's not the bargain that the Lenovo Duet is, but it's not a bad deal, either. With the CM3, you get a USI pen along with excellent battery life, good Chrome performance and a bigger keyboard all of which help make the CM3 a good pick for work and play. The rear cover kickstand design also adds to the bundle. It would be nice if the look and feel were more polished but if you're looking for a full-time Chromebook tablet and a part-time laptop, this Asus is certainly worth considering, especially if it comes down in price.

Inexpensive tablets running Google’s Chrome operating system are scarce, but they hold exciting potential as learning tools for kids or even just as extra portals to the internet in busy households. The Asus Chromebook Detachable CM3 can handle these scenarios and more. But this $369 tablet isn't a screaming bargain of a Chromebook, and its design, build quality, and computing power leave a bit to be desired. The Editors’ Choice-winning Lenovo Chromebook Duet is a better detachable Chrome device for most people.

The Asus Chromebook Detachable CM3 appears to follow some of the ideas that we saw with the Lenovo Chromebook Duet, a budget Chromebook that thoroughly impressed us last year. However, Asus has implemented many additions to that formula that make this the more compelling option for some users. This includes a superior built-in stand that can go vertical or horizontal, a brighter and more vivid display, and the handy inclusion of a stylus. The $389 price tag for my review unit feels steep given the somewhat lackluster performance of the MediaTek MTK 8183. However, the base model at $329 eases that considerably, and given that streaming and web browsing are going to be the primary use cases for this 2-in-1, the 64GB storage shouldn’t be a concern. The laptop just launched so you aren’t likely to find any deals in the short term. But if this drops below $300, it is an absolute steal. And those who appreciate the style and form factor should consider the base model as it's a reasonable value at its retail price.

Sure, the CM3 has a (just okay) stylus, a kickstand with a funky fold, slightly better battery life, and one extra port. But it’s also on par with or slower than the Duet in most tasks I tried, the audio is worse, and it’s thicker and heavier. Given all that, I’m not convinced the CM3’s advantages are worth $100 to most people who are shopping in this category.

ChromeOS is at a point now where it can do pretty much anything your average users are likely to throw at it. Streaming, email, web surfing, word processing and general communication apps are no real issue; unless you have too many running at once. Don’t discount it because of the unknown factor, consider it because of the fact it will be familiar and easy to use for Android lovers and users of the Google platform.

There’s no better feeling than finding a diamond in the rough, and the Asus Chromebook Flip CM3 might just be that diamond for those looking for a cheap but capable laptop that can also function as a tablet. Impressive performance makes this Chromebook a joy to use, even if the touchpad, distractingly glossy display, and short battery life steal some of its thunder. While there are plenty of premium Chromebook options to consider, like the Acer Chromebook Spin 713, if you’re on a budget, you can’t go wrong with the Asus Chromebook Flip CM3. It’s an excellent buy despite its shortcomings and should please students, teachers, and general internet users looking for an affordable internet machine.

Before buying this laptop, you should keep one thing in mind – the Mediatek Kompanio 500 (MT8183) is not a performance SoC. And this is proven by both our CPU and GPU benchmarks, as well as the battery test. Actually, it was the latter, that come as the biggest surprise in our view. We were able to get through the whopping 14 hours of gaming, a virtue of GFXBench’s battery test. This is simply insane. You should keep your child away from this device at any cost. As we said at the beginning of this review, the Chromebook devices are viable only if you don’t need the performance and extra versatility of the Windows OS. And in this case, the Flip CM3 (CM3200) from ASUS can be a real treat for a young user, mainly thanks to its IPS display and great battery life.

The Asus Chromebook Flip CM3200 isn't a very powerful 2-in-1 laptop by any means, but its powerful enough, and comes with some quality features that make it one of the best budget laptops around. Chromebooks are meant to be affordable and useful devices for general computing needs like web browsing, checking emails, streaming movies, and taking the occasional video call or two from the comfort of your couch or local coffee shop. By that metric, the Chromebook Flip CM3200 delivers exactly what you'd expect and even offers a little extra. This includes a 2-in-1 form factor, an HD screen with 3:2 screen ratio for more useful screen space on its 12-inch LCD display, and pretty impressive battery life given its size. Naturally, it's highly portable given its dimensions and weight, but the 3:2 display really makes the Chromebook Flip CM3200 look bigger than it is.
