Another year, another refresh. The new Asus GL503VD represents a slight aesthetic redesign of Asus' highly-revered ROG line. Some will appreciate the simpler, less "gamery" redesign, but not much else has changed. The GTX 1050 still makes for a decent (if noisy) entry-level gaming experience.

But if looks are important to you and you want the best screen in the price range, sticking to the Strix's GTX 1050 GPU isn't a bad choice. Just use a mouse instead of that unpleasant touchpad, and think about upgrading the storage drive.

For a more full-fledged gaming experience, do consider the MSI GE73VR 7RF Raider. It’s a larger, more expensive, more powerful laptop that costs Rs 30,000 more than the Hero, but it’s also a true desktop replacement. If the size turns you off, the Hero is too good to pass up on.

All in all, the Scar Edition is a nicely balanced gaming notebook in its segment despite the issues mentioned above. But it does come at a premium at S$3,498. The alternative is the much more affordable Hero Edition (comparatively speaking) at S$2,698, and might be the better buy if you are an esports-type of gamer, where less hardware demanding games like CS:GO and DOTA 2 are what you live by and will live by for the next couple of years.

The ROG Strix Hero Edition starts at a price point of Rs 92,990 and it is a competitive category with rivals like Dell, HP and MSI all having decent offerings. So, Asus does have a battle on its hands. However, with the Hero Edition it does have a capable challenger to take on the competition. It has a beautiful display, delivers solid performance and has an impressive battery life. Asus is trying to widen its customer base with its latest offering and the Strix Hero edition will certainly help it in doing so.

With all being said, it’s really hard to recommend any other 15-inch GTX 1070-powered laptop. For just about the same price, you can get the Alienware 15 R3 and the Predator 15 (G9-593) but we doubt that you will get the same set of features and advantages as the ROG GL503VS offers. And if you are wondering whether or not the extra cash is worth over the previous generation GL502VS, our answer is yes. Definitely!

Those components heavily tax the battery, though, with the Scar lasting less than 2 hours when playing movies and only 1 hour and 22 minutes in PCMark 8’s Home benchmark. The system is also set to use passive cooling when on battery power (which curbs performance rather than engaging fans), so this isn’t a system you’ll be able to game on without being attached to power. That said, if you are OK with a very portable 2.5kg gaming rig and 144Hz screen combo, then this powerful device is one of the best gaming laptops we’ve tested under

The Asus ROG Strix GL503 Scar Edition is extremely expensive, and its value proposition all comes down to the 144Hz G-Sync screen. A lot of gamers swear by variable or at least high refresh rates and loudly proclaim that they could never go back to a normal 60Hz monitor. We aren't quite as militant, and maybe that has to do with the relatively low immersiveness you get with a 15.6-inch laptop screen, but it's still a luxury we could get used to. If you spend a lot of time in competitive esports, you'll get more mileage out of such a laptop. If you're used to it on your desktop and want the same experience on the go, you don't have many other options.

The ROG Strix GL503 is a pretty decent entry to ASUS’ gaming series, but the lower than expected GPU severely limits your options when it comes to playing games. Sure, you’ll be able to play most games in the market fairly well in medium settings, but with a sticker price of Php 69,995 many gamers are expecting more.

The ASUS ROG Strix GL503 is a sleek, gamer-centric laptop that will suit the needs of most. As of the present, it’s capable of getting respectable frame rates in graphically demanding AAA games, at medium to high settings. A few years down the line though? Your investment may start to struggle given the fact that game requirements increase every year, and this laptop only packs a GTX 1050.

The storage performance is pretty decent, fast enough to get you into your bigger games in a reasonable time, but not so fast you can’t read the loading screen tips, ha! The USB performance was under what we hoped for though, but it does seem to be a solvable driver issue and something we expect to be an easy fix with a patch. The inclusion of some punchy speakers, the LED lit keyboard, and comprehensive connectivity all sweeten the deal though. Overall, the Hero isn’t cheap, but it’s very competitive in terms of features and a good return on your investment.

Battery life is disappointing, so you'll want to keep your eyes peeled for an outlet or take the power brick with you. In addition to poor battery life, the cooling system is super loud under demanding loads. The noise doesn't bother me much, but it could be distracting in a classroom environment. The starting price is also pretty steep. Nitpicks aside, if you've got the money for it, the Scar is a nicely balanced laptop for the right buyer.

The GL503 Scar Edition is a laptop that will attract a lot of gamers despite its price. The laptop starts at Rs 1,54,990 but has a lot going for it. It's a powerful laptop with an impressive display. Although the sound output could've been better but overall this is a very good gaming laptop. Add to it the fact that it's compact and easy to carry around works in its favour. A solid performer that looks good as well. Not much more you can ask for in a gaming laptop, can you? There is intense competition in the gaming laptops now and those looking for alternatives can look at the HP Omen series or Asus's Hero Edition.
