70% Asus ROG GL552VW laptop review: An Alienware alternative in a budget
Source: Gadgets Now English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
Clearly, Asus ROG GL552VW seems to be an upgrade for the company's previous gaming laptop models, specifically the Asus ROG GL552JX. It has all the power an average gamer can ask for in a PC laptop. It also is one of the options that users might want to consider given the Rs 82,490 price tag. Similar specifications can be found on the Dell's new Alienware 15 laptops as well but they are likely to cost you an arm and a leg.

Asus GL552VW ROG Gaming Laptop Quick Review
Source: Gadget Diary English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
With such features, it is surprising that the laptop doesn’t really heat much under load. The top middle part of the keyboard gets warm up to 45 degrees Celcius, and that is all. The battery life is decent but if you want to game, make sure you have a wall socket nearby.

70% A mid-range gaming laptop with a GTX 960M that's let down by its screen
Source: Tech Advisor English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
The Asus RoG GL552 is a more affordable, lower-spec take on the RoG G752, which is one of the best gaming laptops money can buy right now. Any resemblance is mostly visual, though. Superficial parts of the build are worse, the screen is nowhere near as good and the trackpad is typical slightly annoying Windows laptop fodder. It’s definitely not the perfect laptop. However, in terms of providing a solid gaming experience for your cash, it’s a decent buy. The GTX 960M GPU hits the sweet spot, where it cam handle demanding games at reasonable settings without costing as much as a second-hand car. One you’d actually want to drive, anyway. Screen quality is a sticking point at this price. Apparently £900 isn’t enough to have an IPS screen, even though previous GL552 models (and current ones in other countries) use such a panel. So if you see a different version of the GL552 with an IPS screen, it's likely to be a better buy than this exact one.

70% Asus ROG GL552VW Review

The Asus ROG GL552VW is quite simply one of the best gaming laptops out there, under a budget of Rs. 1 lakh. We would have preferred better battery life, but one can make it work.

80% Asus Republic of Gamers GL552VW (ROG) review - mid-range gaming
Source: Expert Reviews English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
While performance is about what you would expect given the specifications, it's clear that a few corners have been cut to get its price down to £1,000. Unfortunately, that happens to be the display, which is mediocre at best. The matt, 15.6in display has a standard 1,920x1,080 resolution, but its contrast is terrible, measuring just 357:1. This is due to a combination of very high 0.64cd/m2 black levels and a low maximum brightness of 230.9cd/m2. Taken together, it all makes for a rather washed out, dull and lifeless display.

80% Asus ROG GL552

With a faster hard drive, more colorful display and better-looking chassis than its direct competitors, the Asus ROG GL552 is the sub-$1,000 gaming laptop to beat. If you're looking to save money, the $800 Dell's Inspiron 15 7000 provides similar frame rates and longer battery life, but slower overall performance and a less-vibrant display.

80% Asus ROG GL552VW review – Skylake multimedia 15-incher
Source: Ultrabook Review English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
The Asus GL552VW performs well and runs cool and quiet in pretty much every situation. The IPS screen on this top end configuration is also a pleasure to look at. On the other hand, the design and especially the build-quality are a step backwards when compared to the the older G-series 15-inchers, or the competition available today, plus the keyboard and trackpad need a breath of fresh air. If you decide to get one of these though, make sure you pick the version with a metallic lid-cover, the plastic variants are poorly built.

Asus Republic of Gamers GL552VW

We've come full circle, and what was the question? Ah, yes, can one of industry's most recognisable brands nail the gaming laptop? The answer is almost, but not quite. At £875, the Asus Republic of Gamers GL552VW promises plenty but falls short in one or two key areas.

This is a sub-£1,000 gaming machine, however, whose key components aren't cheap. But the budget doesn’t stretch forever, which means the GL552VW suffers from issues elsewhere. The memory is single-channel, the SSD is inconsistent, and the speakers disappoint. Ergonomically, too, there are problems – the good keyboard is undermined by the trackpad. The biggest problem, though, is the screen: its terrible contrast impacts on every department, with insipid-looking games that serve up indistinct dark areas and a lack of punch where colour should be bursting from the panel.

60% Review: Asus GL552
Source: PC Authority English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
W hen it comes to gaming laptops, it’s hard to look past the landslide of releases from MSI and Aorus – it seems that every other month they’ve released the umpteenth version of their most popular models. Yet Asus tends to stick to more productivity and consumer focused laptops, which is why the GL552 sparked our interest. Wearing the prestigious Asus Republic of Gamers brand that we’ve come to associate with premium-priced products, it’s a gaming laptop with a remarkably low price point. Considering the RoG branding, that immediately seems a little weird, but let’s see what’s in store at this price point.

A step up from the GL552, but also a step down from the G551
Source: Laptop Media English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
As we said earlier, it’s hard to assess the notebook given the fact that the new G552VW is actually the GL552VW. On American soil, the laptop sells under the GL552VW name while in Europe the notebook is known as a successor to the G552. The latter, unfortunately, is further from the truth. The G552VW costs, at least, €150 more than the GL552VW but doesn’t offer anything in return. The lid gets an aluminum overhaul, but the rest of the chassis remains the same – flexible plastic and not enough sturdiness. We kind of miss the aluminum chamfered edges from the old G551. It’s definitely a step down in terms of design and build quality. Also, the old touchpad (of the G551) felt kind of sturdier, more reliable.

The GL552 gets a solid update, still maintains good performance/price ratio
Source: Laptop Media English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
The ASUS GL552 is a budget-oriented gaming notebook, part of the premium Republic of Gamers lineup, that hooked us for its really lucrative price-to-performance ratio. A lot of things changed since the last generation (you can read our in-depth review here). ASUS has bumped up the specs to a new quad-core Skylake CPU – Core i7-6700HQ, that should bring a marginal increase in performance and a little improvement over in the battery department. Also, the CPU is now accompanied by DDR4 RAM and GeForce GTX 960M instead of the GTX 950M, and the latter is really a huge deal. The higher-end GTX 960M offers a lot more horsepower under the hood and, of course, GDDR5 VRAM instead of DDR3 in the GTX 950M. This will result in a great performance leap over the last generation GL552, but the price gets an “update” as well, the GPU being the main reason for that.
