Applications that should work perfectly fine just crashed, the keyboard and trackpad were disappointing, and the speakers just aren't all that good. There's also no upgrade path; the dock won't work with future laptop models. However, the worst thing about the GX700 is that we already know it's outdated. This product has been available internationally for just under a year, and if we're spending so much money, we want the absolute best. Asus showed off its GX800 model at this year's Computex, and that model has not one but two GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs, plus a mechanical keyboard and better speakers.

Games, too, run absolutely butter-smooth. Even when the frame rates are lower than you might like (which happens in some games no matter what hardware you have), the G-sync panel keeps things smooth and tear-free. Aside from the main talking-points of the system, it has essentially everything you could need or want in terms of features. Two USB 3.1 Type C ports are present as well as three USB 3.0 Type A ports. 32GB of RAM is more than enough for simple gaming, and the Samsung SM951s in RAID0 thunder along at a great pace.

If you want the most powerful laptop that a lot of money can buy, then you should absolutely buy the ROG GX700. Or you could pay £1,000 less and get a laptop that’s nearly as powerful in the form of the MSI Dragon and you’ll barely notice the difference. But price/performance sums aren’t really relevant when the product in question is a unique piece of gaming hardware.

The ASUS ROG GX700 is a fantastic piece of tech, but it still raises a simple question: Why would you want one? It’s a beautiful laptop with plenty of power but costs a whopping AED 20,000. If you have that much money, wouldn’t you rather build a super high end gaming rig?

There’s no getting around the fact that a liquid-cooled notebook feels like overkill. But having spent a week with the Asus ROG GX700, I have to say it's winning me over. The ROG GX700 may be a laptop in name only, with its hefty weight and cooling module weighing more than most small children, but it's stonkingly fast and has one of the best screens I’ve seen on a gaming notebook.
