Reviews for the Asus ROG Strix G15 G513QY
With the ROG Strix G15 G513QY, Asus adds a highly modern gaming laptop to its lineup that is fully geared towards AMD. The second-fastest mobile processor meets AMD's strongest mobile graphics card in the form of the brand-new AMD Radeon RX 6800M. Be careful, Intel and Nvidia!

The Asus ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition G513 gives you an AMD CPU and an AMD GPU working in perfect harmony, and the benefits of that combination are plain to see. It's not quite perfect, but for the price you're paying it's one of the best gaming laptops around.

Honestly, there's very little to complain about the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition. Everything about the laptop is amazing but if there's one nitpick that I have to choose, it would be that the webcam is missing which is quite essential for the current circumstances. It's also a pity that ASUS Malaysia has no plans (yet) to import the advantage editions to Malaysia so we have no idea of how much the price tag is, making it difficult to do any point of comparison. But one thing is for sure - be prepared to spend a hefty amount of money if you want this bad boy.

The Asus ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition offers top-notch CPU performance, very competitive gaming performance, and a solid value for the price. In that price range, we could find only a single GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop-based gaming laptop--the vast majority used GeForce RTX 3060 or Nvidia’s last-generation GPUs. Most of those gaming laptops are also built around Intel’s older 10th-gen or even 9th-gen CPUs, which are massively outclassed by the Ryzen 9 5900HX inside of the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition. You’re basically getting the one of the fastest laptop CPUs available, with a GPU that can run with Nvidia’s best in conventional gaming, all for an affordable price. It’s simply the best deal in town right now.

By cutting a few corners, especially when it comes to weight and case design, ASUS has made the ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition one of the best gaming values on the market. Sure, there are less expensive notebooks out there, like Dell's G15 lineup, but those feel even cheaper and offer less performance. The G15 Advantage also makes it clear that AMD isn't just dabbling in gaming notebooks anymore — it's finally ready to seriously compete with NVIDIA and Intel.

I’ve tested the ASUS Strix G15 with AMD’s Radeon RX 6800M graphics in 13 games with both stock RAM and new RAM to see what sort of a performance improvement is possible. I’ve also compared it against other gaming laptops and tested with an external screen to show you what the 6800M is capable of!

The all-AMD variant of the Asus ROG Strix G15 series is a very competitive multi-purpose performance laptop in the sub $2000 category, even if a slightly limited showcase of what the Radeon RX 6800M platform is truly capable of. It's aesthetically more refined than the regular Strix G models, it's a lot more powerful, touting in the range of 3080 notebooks in some loads, and sells for less. You might complain about the lack of certain features and those limitations that impact the performance in some games over what this could have theoretically delivered with faster RAM (and a MUX), and we'll discuss them in the detailed review down below. But despite these, I still feel there's very good value in this laptop and it should be on your short-list this year.

The question is whether you’re in the target demographic. For example, if you like the Strix’s flashy lights but want the absolute best performance you can get, you might be better suited paying more for the Strix Scar 15. If you’re looking for an RGB look that’s more subtle and refined, with a more practical port selection, you may find Alienware’s M15 R4 more appealing. And if you want an excellent AMD system with all-day battery life, but don’t quite need this much power, you’ll be able to get all kinds of options, like Lenovo’s Legion 5 or Asus’ Zephyrus G14, at lower prices. But if you’re specifically looking for this kind of bold design, in an all-AMD system, at a sub-$2,000 price point, and are willing to give up a webcam and some modern ports, the Strix G15 Advantage Edition is probably the best you can do. Go much cheaper and you’re getting into territory where you’ll see significant compromises on performance.

While it might not be the best gaming laptop in the market, Asus ROG G15 is one of the cheapest. With a decent amount of specs at an affordable price, consumers who want to try out a budget alternative laptop should definitely give it a go.

But the appeal with an all-AMD system is the overall value. It’s a highly adaptable laptop with a fast screen for esports, nine hours of battery life if you need it for work tasks, and high-end components for playing the latest, graphically demanding games. Ray tracing and other cons aside, the Asus ROG Strix G15 AMD Advantage Edition is an amazing first showing from both AMD and Asus, and I expect this laptop will lead the push for AMD to nab a greater share of the gaming laptop market. As for consumers, this ROG Strix G15 deserves a thorough and honest consideration the next time you’re shopping for a gaming laptop. It’s that outstanding.

Now, I would hold out for some reviews before jumping on these products. My concerns are around noise levels and especially the interior temperatures. Based on the little information available in the ASUS review guides, this G15 Advantage might end up hotter than the standard Strix G15, which ran fairly hot already. That’s not really a surprise given the components are designed to run at higher power in the Advantage models, and we’ll need to further test how the improved thermal module copes with this increased power. Other than that, though, I’d expect the Strix G15 to be a competitive product. At this point, I don’t have a time estimate for the review, all I can say is that I don’t have a review sample yet, so a review won’t happen sooner than a few weeks. In the meantime, I’d love to hear what you guys think about this product, so let’s talk down below.

Overall, we're impressed. ASUS has done a nice job with the ASUS ROG Strix G15. Unlike some other, more understated systems, there's no mistaking the ROG Strix G15 for anything other than a gaming notebook, but it is still aesthetically appealing in our opinion and it's well behaved in most scenarios. It's only while gaming that its fans spin up and make any noise. In terms of the platform's capabilities, AMD's clearly got the goods. AMD's Ryzen 5000 and Radeon RX 6000M series combo for laptops will offer strong performance all around. Intel's got some advantages in terms of IO and single-threaded performance with its latest Tiger Lake-based platforms, but those aren't enough to overshadow what AMD has done here for gaming machines.

The "Advantage" in this special model of the Asus ROG Strix G15 refers to AMD's Advantage Design Framework, a new initiative in the spirit of Intel Evo and Nvidia Studio; in AMD's words, "the result of a multiyear collaboration between AMD and its global PC partners to deliver the next generation of premium, high-performance gaming laptops." The ROG Strix Advantage Edition is one of the inaugural systems in the program -- the only one thus far to include the new Radeon RX 6800M GPU -- and while it's a great gaming laptop and succeeds at hitting "high performance," it feels a little less premium than competitors and even its own sibling, the ROG Strix Scar 15.

All AMD everything! AMD has been on a roll as of late, thrilling the Laptop Mag staff with the power and endurance of its Ryzen 5000 series CPUs. The love affair continues with the Asus ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition. For somewhere between $1,549 - $1,699, you get a system with not just an AMD processor, but an overclockable AMD GPU, a first for laptops. You also get a lot of nifty tech focusing on balancing performance and power efficiency, with butter-smooth graphics and over 10 hours of battery life. And the system’s standing toe-to-toe with some of the biggest names in the industry. Did it win every round? No, but for the hundreds of dollars you’re saving it’s pretty damned close. The G15 isn’t perfect -- the screen could be brighter and more vivid, and the SSD should definitely be faster. And would it kill you Asus to try to fit a webcam back into the picture? If power (and a more vivid display) are your most important priorities, I recommend checking out the $2,999 Razer Blade 15 Advanced Model.
