Powered by the new AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D, the ROG Strix SCAR 17 X3D is currently ASUS’ most powerful gaming laptop and arguably one of the best-performing gaming laptops in the market right now. The additional 3D V-cache on the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D allows it to offer huge gains in gaming performance on certain titles at 1080p/QHD resolutions. When compared to flagship Intel processors like the Intel Core i9-13980HX the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D not only manages to offer competitive scores but better overall power efficiency as well. Unfortunately, the laptop doesn’t sell in India, but if you’re planning on going abroad and want a laptop that features the best of NVIDIA and AMD, then this is the one to go for. We recently got our hands on the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 X3D featuring AMD’s powerful Zen4 Ryzen 9 7945HX3D processor.

The upgradability is good – two SODIMMs for up to 64GB of DDR5-4800MHz and two M.2 slots compatible with Gen 4 SSDs. We just wanted to see faster memory here (at least the device has 1Rx8 sticks, which is fine) because the performance of the AMD CPUs can be seriously boosted with snappy RAM. Aside from that, even with not-so-fast memory, the CPU is still a beast. Interestingly, the NVMe gets hot (61°C) while benchmarking but there is no sign of throttling. However, the SSD thermals are normal in standard usage. The keyboard is great – it has a per-key RGB backlight and it’s comfortable for both typing and gaming (and it’s quiet). The touchpad is fast and smooth but it’s a bit noisy for work. The build quality is good with few exceptions here and there. The I/O didn’t offer even a single Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 connector but still, the selection is good with two USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) ports and a 2.5G LAN. With that out of the way, we can conclude that the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 G733 (2023) is a gaming powerhouse.

Right now, you can get the RTX 4090 / 7945HX Strix Scar 17 for £3,300 (down from the usual price of £3,800) and the RTX 4080 / 7945HX model for £2,900. In the UK, the Strix Scar 17 X3D will have an RRP of £3,799, but I don’t know if it will be available with the cheaper RTX 4080 GPU. There is no doubt that the latest version of AMD’s already impressive Dragon Range Ryzen R9 7945H CPU has moved the goalposts regarding gaming performance. The ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D can run games even faster than MSI’s monstrous Titan GT77 and leaves other RTX 4090 machines we’ve tested, like the Medion Erazer Beast X40, in its dust. The outstanding performance does put into sharp relief the fact that the basic design of the ROG Strix Scar 17 is now getting rather long in the tooth and has been supplanted by the ROG Strix Scar 18 in the Asus ROG hierarchy. I’m sure there are good reasons why Asus has taken this route, but it still leaves the consumer paying top dollar for an old design of car, albeit one with a new engine.

If gaming is what you're primarily after in a mobile computer, this Asus ROG Scar 17 X3D is the fastest option money can buy today. The AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D platform delivers on its promise, especially in games, but this Scar 17 chassis as a whole might not be enough for some of you. Especially with the Scar 16/18 2023 models now getting discounts, on top of their generational advantages over this previous-gen chassis.

A device this large and expensive, with this little battery life and this flashy a look is not going to be the right choice for everyone (or, let’s be honest — most people). All kinds of lines, such as Lenovo’s Legion Pro, offer devices that are both better built, more affordable, and more practical to carry. The Scar 17 has basically one thing going for it: It offers some of the best gaming performance you can get. (And, to be fair, for well over $3,000, that should be an expectation.) It’s overshadowed by its X3D counterpart when it comes to the raw frame rates, but it’s still blasting pretty much every other gaming laptop we’ve ever tested out of the water. I’m comfortable saying it probably offers better bang for your buck than the X3D model does, though that’s likely not a factor that matters much to people who are shopping for an RTX 4090.

AMD did it. It brought 3D V-Cache to the mobile space, and it made the Strix Scar X3D a blisteringly powerful laptop that blows the competition out of the water. For those who have $3,700 on hand, the calculus should be pretty simple: buy the X3D if frame rates are your sole priority and you want the best of the best. The minute you start to care about other stuff (namely, battery life, portability, or any semblance of webcam quality), you’ll probably want to look elsewhere. Personally, I’m more interested in what the X3D represents to the gaming laptop space. When testing this, I was reminded of the time when I was testing the ROG Zephyrus G14 back in 2020. I remember checking those numbers again and again. AMD had shattered our understanding of what a gaming laptop could do. And I think it may have just done that again.

AMD's Ryzen 9 7945HX3D processor inside this machine is an excellent performer all around; single-thread performance is very good, multi-threaded performance is right up there with the best, and it's a gaming champ. The GeForce RTX 4090 in the ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D offered killer performance too, though it didn’t take the top spot across the board versus the larger MSI Titan GT77 HX. The ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D also offers somewhat more tame acoustics and thermals than some competing high-end gaming notebooks. We're not sure of exact pricing just yet, but we expect the ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D to drop in competitively as well. It's going to demand a pretty penny, of course, considering its class-leading performance and features, but like the original ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17, we expect the 3D V-Cache enabled version to weigh in relatively competitive.

One glaring omission at the time of writing is almost certainly the price, and as it stands, we currently haven't been given one. However, following on from the ROG Strix Scar 17 with the same configuration, but with the Ryen 9 7945HX, which retails for around $3000, we expect the X3D variant to cost slightly more, putting it in the $3200-3500 price range. That would be fair given that this is the first time AMD, or anyone, has put 3D V-Cache into a mobile processor, and the best-in-class products typically demand a premium price tag. From our testing of the ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17, the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D truly performs like a desktop replacement processor should, with the added advantage for gamers in titles that can use the additional L3 cache. As stated, we would love to see a list of games provided by developers or AMD from in-house testing, so gamers and users can make informed buying decisions based on the 3D V-Cache alone.

Despite my 'crashing' experience, it doesn't mean that the ROG Strix Scar 17 is faulty. But still, there seem to be some optimisation problems between the CPU and GPU that I can't quite pinpoint. Because normally, I could just play some AAA game titles on max settings without much trouble in the past from ROG's predecessors. So hopefully, AMD can send a fix patch or something. For a high-end gaming laptop at the price of RM16,999, that's basically the normal price range thanks to inflation and the weak Ringgit currency. Nevertheless, it's still a powerful device capable of handling gaming and content creation. So if you do have the budget for this, by all means, go for it but perhaps do be careful with the graphics settings.

If you’re on the hunt for a gaming rig and portability is a key consideration, then the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 should absolutely be in your sights. This impressive rig is big and beastly, and certainly not cheap at $3,499—but it’s incredibly powerful and capable of running nearly anything at high or top-end settings. Heat spikes are a concern, however, and the webcam is a dud, but otherwise the ROG Strix Scar 17 really delivers. If you can stomach the price, this portable powerhouse is one of the best gaming laptops you can grab in 2023.

After spending 2 weeks with the ROG Strix SCAR 17 G733PY, I can tell upfront that this is one of the most powerful gaming laptop money can buy right now. At $3499, ROG has a balanced performance and cooling capabilities for laptops of this calibre. Even though the long-time debate of Intel vs AMD is still around, personally, I think it doesn’t matter much if you’re getting this laptop solely for gaming purposes. That is unless you’re planning to include content creation tasks into the mix, then the 16C32T AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX would be around 10% faster than the Intel counterpart.

The ASUS Scar 17 is the most powerful gaming laptop I’ve tested so far in 2023, thanks to AMD’s Ryzen 9 7945HX 16 core processor!

AMD has really come out swinging with its new Dragon Range processors. They provide extremely impressive multi-core performance but do so while consuming surprisingly little power and heat. Combine that with a top–of–the–range Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU and you have what is one of the most powerful and practical gaming laptops on the market. That said, I am left wondering why you can’t buy the new Ryzen 9 chip in the latest ROG Scar Strix 16 or 18 form–factor with the impressive Nebula Mini-LED display. For a Mini LED fix outside of Asus, consider the pricey Razer Blade 16 or, for the more value-minded, consider the non-Mini LED Medion Erazer Beast X40. The Ryzen 9 7945HX chip will soon be available in the new Alienware 16 and 18 as well as the new Lenovo Legion Pro 7 16 gaming laptops so there is an argument for holding off making a purchase until we get a chance to put those three through their paces.

The 2023 ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 is a powerful and high-performing gaming laptop with a sleek design and impressive hardware specifications. The laptop’s display offers an incredibly smooth and responsive gaming experience, while the keyboard and touchpad are comfortable and intuitive to use. The audio output is also of high quality, and the ROG Armory Crate software offers detailed system information and customization options. However, the battery life could have been better.

If you’re looking for the closest you can get to desktop PC performance in a gaming laptop, this should be on your short list. It’s not the only option you’ve got, as other options like the Asus ROG Strix G18 have better battery life and a nicer display. That said, the power available for the money here is impressive; other RTX 4090 laptops, like the Razer Blade 16, can push $4,000 or more. Not everything is great, but for the most part, it all evens out. The display brightness is simply okay, but color accuracy is good and the 240Hz refresh rate and G-Sync support are key for gaming. Similarly, the battery life is surprisingly short, even when you’re not gaming, but given the gaming focus of the laptop and the 6.61-pound weight, you’ll likely spend most of your time plugged in anyway. No matter how you look at it, spending over $3,000 on a laptop isn’t an easy decision. That said, looking at the hardware inside the Asus ROG Strix SCAR 17, it’s a decent value even if it may not be a bargain. This is where the powerful Ryzen chipset pays off; for an Intel-powered laptop with this kind of horsepower, you’d find yourself spending much more.

Providing blazing-fast performance is the minimum expectation at this price point, as harsh as that may sound, but the Scar 17 does meet that bar. The processing and gaming performance here is, if not always chart-topping, among the fastest available right now. Again, you’d hope so for the price, but it does deliver on that front, in addition to the fast-refresh, high-resolution screen. The build, while it looks appealing enough, doesn’t stack up to more premium designs in this price tier, most notably the Razer Blade 18. Battery life is also a major letdown, though for the category, that may not be a deal breaker since it will mostly stay put on your desk. Still, this is a deeply expensive proposition, and it’s difficult to not to see the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 8 as a much better deal; its performance hangs close despite the disparity in price, size, and GPU. If you prefer the larger screen, or simply have the extra budget to get as much power as possible from your next gaming laptop, this may be the option for you instead.

The Strix Scar 17 offers astounding gaming and productivity performance, but its $3,600 price tag will make some shake their head with vigor. If you have the funds and want to guarantee you’re playing at the highest frame rates on max settings, you’ll quickly find that no game is safe from the incredible power packed within. It is the definition of “future proof,” but not all is well underneath the hood of the Strix Scar 17. With subpar brightness and color depth, underwhelming SSD speeds, middling battery life, and a surprisingly cheap base, Asus has made sacrifices to bolster its performance. The disappointing display is particularly offensive, as hardware this good should be coupled with an equally superb screen to enhance the experience. And if anyone is spending nearly $4,000, they deserve a sturdy base to make the whole package feel good. If you’re looking for a superior alternative, the MSI Titan GT77 HX is certainly more expensive, but the phenomenal display makes up for where the Strix Scar 17 slipped up.

The 2023 Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 refresh is a high performance laptop with the new AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX processor and your choice of high wattage NVIDIA RTX 4080 or 4090 dedicated graphics. By current standards, this is a lower priced offering in the top tier of gaming laptops. It has a QHD IPS full P3 gamut display, per key RGB lighting with body lighting effects, a vapor chamber with Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal and the usual wide array of ports. It competes with the Intel 13th gen Core i9 mobile processor line and models like the MSI Raider, Razer Blade 16 and 18 and even the larger MSI GT77 Titan.

The 2023 generation of the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 is one of the most powerful laptops money can buy today, and exceptionally competitive as a gaming machine in this Ryzen 9 7945HX and RTX 4090 configuration that sells for less than the Intel-based 2023 Scar models with similar specs. At the same time, though, a handful of reasons might convince some of you to pay extra for the more advanced Scar 16/Scar 18 designs, as you'll find out from this review.
