In the sea of gaming laptops, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 can stand out because of its slightly unconventional design. Sure, it is a no-holds-barred machine, but that is true about most gaming laptops. For Scar 18 to become your choice, you will have to make peace with the fact that its battery life is poorer than most other gaming laptops and that it also is slightly heavier. Other than that, I do not see a reason why a gamer would ignore the Asus ROG Strix Scar 18, especially if they are willing to spend around Rs 3.60 lakh.

Given the size, weight, and even price of the ROG Strix Scar 18, it’s not for everyone. But if this laptop will serve as a gaming desktop replacement to save space in your room and you don’t mind carrying a 3.1kg laptop around all the time, then this is a great choice model to buy. You get the latest Intel 13th Gen laptop processor paired with a powerful NVIDIA RTX 4090 GPU. With that, you can expect the ROG Strix Scar 18 to last you a long time. If you’re interested in the ROG Strix Scar 18 with a similar configuration, it currently retails for PHP 294,000. At the time of writing, ROG does have a discount offering it for only PHP 285,000 on their official Lazada store. It’s a big price to pay, but you do get everything a gaming PC can do but in a more portable package. We think it’s worth it, especially if you want a laptop instead of a gaming PC, and if you have the budget it is a great laptop to have. But if you want something lighter or more portable, ROG does have other options available for you.

The 2023 Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 is an absolute beast of a gaming laptop and all this power does not come cheap, at Rs. 3,59,990. It isn't exactly portable either. However, you are getting the very best mobile CPU and GPU that are currently available for a Windows laptop, and there's no doubt that it should age well over the years. The only real downsides to this laptop is the fact that it does run warm even when you aren't doing much on battery power. Apart from these things, it's a well-built pixel-destroying machine that's sure to put a smile on anyone's face.

The Asus Strix G18 is a top-notch gaming laptop, there’s no denying that. While it does have a few drawbacks, namely its average battery life and steep price, the G18 is stacked with so much power to be considered a prized possession in any gamer’s household. Put simply, if you’re after a desktop replacement with the very best performance on offer and you can afford to buy one, you absolutely should.

Asus' flagship portable gaming machine, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 (2023), sits at the top of the performance tree, packing (in our review sample) a 13th-gen Core i9, an RTX 4090, and a cooling solution which helps them run at their best. But there's a price to pay to be cutting edge of the best gaming laptops. Not a physical one, thankfully, but a monetary one. And we do wonder how many people will stump up the funds to buy one. That investment isn't just in top-line internals. It goes towards a screen that impresses with every look, a slim-bezeled QHD+ panel with fabulous colour reproduction, excellent response times and a 240Hz refresh rate which keeps absolutely everything smooth. It gets you a case with some luxurious and unique design touches, highly impressive lighting, and the ability to expand the SSD and RAM if you need to in the future.

When Asus approached me to review the ROG Strix Scar 18, not once but twice I thought if I would want to use a laptop with a massive 18-inch display. I may not be the right audience for an 18-inch gaming laptop but there is a section that would be fascinated by an expansive display, the Intel Core i9 processor, and Nvidia’s RTX 4090 GPU inside. It’s one of those pro-grade laptops that promises the raw performance that one would expect from a high-end gaming laptop. Here’s my review.

ROG did not disappoint with their latest ROG Strix SCAR 18. This series is getting more mature by the day and the existing features are being fine-tuned to offer a better user experience. The industry is moving into the 16 and 18-inch display as the manufacturers are picking up the 16:10 aspect ratio as a norm. The Nebula display is gorgeous and it is something that I would recommend especially for gaming creators. The combination of the 13th generation Intel Core processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 series graphics card breeze through whatever workload you can throw at it. The third-generation DLSS and Frame Generation is mind-blowing and makes more sense for gaming laptops that generally has smaller than 20-inch display. While the official retail price of RM18,999 might sound ridiculous to those faint-hearted, however, if you were to compare it with other brands, you might find this is one of the reasonably-priced options. Well, at least for the Malaysian market whereby ROG is usually being competitive.

There is very little to fault with the ASUS ROG Strix Scar 18. While it’s packing a lot of tech it’s not as bulky as we thought it would be. We sadly can’t say the same for the price tag of this notebook. At R79 999, this notebook isn’t likely to be selling like toilet paper pre-lockdown, but those who are able to afford it, won’t be disappointed with the performance. The GPU may not be a full-fat desktop GeForce RTX 4090, but its performance paired with the gorgeous QHD display makes for a gaming experience unlike anything else we’ve experienced. The downside is that the components are incredibly power hungry and as such the battery drains like bath water, especially when you’re using the GPU. The display input switching does help the battery life but you shouldn’t expect more than two and a half hours of uptime at a push. One thing we would like to see is a few more extras in the box. Our review unit came bundled with a backpack which is rather disappointing. There are also interchangeable “Armor Caps” which don’t really change the look of the notebook all that much as you can only remove one small piece of the notebook’s body to customise it. A mouse and a keyboard or even a USB Type-C charger would be a nice addition given the asking price. Overall, however, this is a great notebook and it gets a heart recommendation from us, providing you have the money.

Speaking of which, the notebook got us through 8 hours and 30 minutes of Web browsing, or 5 hours of video playback on a single charge. ASUS claims that the included 330W charger can fill 50% of the capacity for only 30 minutes. It’s great to learn that you can use the power adapter for something different than cutting charcuterie. In a perfect world, the review would end here. But since nothing is perfect, we have to mention some points we would like to improve for next year. First and foremost – ASUS shouldn’t be scared of the SD card slot. While it takes some space on the inside, it can be a useful commodity. Although it is clearly nitpicking, the back’s LED lights would look much better if they were centered in the middle of the back panel. On the bright side, we have to mention the presence of a Web camera – something that was bizarrely missing in previous models. At the end of the day, this is a niche device. It is expensive, but in our view – it is definitely worth something in the roundabout of a kidney. We are going to compare it with the Acer Predator Helios 18 (PH18-71) as soon as we are able to snatch a retail version of the product.

This top-specced Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 is notably more powerful in demanding work activities and games than the previous Scar generations, as well as significantly better cooled with the redesigned thermal module. Add in a beautiful 18-inch display, good inputs, a familiar ROG design, and a sturdy chassis, and this laptop is a clear recommendation in its class. At the same time, though, this is a rather large and heavy device, and is affected by a few odd design decisions that impact its daily use ergonomics.

The Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 features powerful components, allowing it to run demanding games at top-notch settings, and show them off beautifully on an impressive 18-inch screen. The system's portability is nearly nonexistent, however, and its price is sure to dissuade all but the most dedicated gaming laptop aficionados.

I came. I saw. I kicked some ass. And I’m ready to do it again. The Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 is an absolute beast of a machine that is a joy to interact with whether you’re gaming, watching video or gasp, actually working. The display will grab your attention and never let go. That is, once you get past the futuristic design in all its transparent, customizable LED glory. From there, you’ll be sucked into Scar 18’s siren song sung by its quad speakers. But once you get past all the flash and creature comforts, there’s the components to think of. Despite this being a Strix laptop, Asus’ mid-tier line, it didn’t skimp on the power bestowing the Scar 18 with a ridiculously powerful, overclockable Intel Core i9 processor and an Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU which is the newest king of the mobile GPUs. It’s not a system to be trifled with. Now there are a few hiccups, some like the 720p webcam and the below-average battery life are smaller than others. The main problem with this system is the price. At $3,699, this premium system will be out of the reach of most gamers, which is a pity because the Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 has to be seen, heard and played with to be believed.
