While it may sit in the middle of 10in hybrid range on price, the Asus Transformer Book T100 Chi is classier than the average. Improvements to design, screen quality and keyboard quality make it a neat choice if you don’t mind working on a small screen, with a small keyboard and certainly justify the extra price over the cheapest models.

This is a good upgrade to the Transformer Book T100. The body design and materials have taken a leap forward, it's long-lasting despite the absence of a battery in the keyboard dock, and it performs fine as long as you stick to basic tasks (web browsing, productivity, multimedia playback...). Unfortunately, it has very little storage for your personal files, unfaithful colours and not a single full-size USB port.

We're a little underwhelmed by the Asus Transformer Book Chi T100. It's not particularly light or compact, and it lacks the ports that would make it a legitimately useful laptop, which seems like a step backwards to us compared to the previous Transformer Book. Moreover, the basic model of the Microsoft Surface 3, which also has 64GB of storage, costs just £20 more and has a full-sized USB port, a better screen and a faster chipset.

Promoted as a 2-in-1 tablet and laptop solution, the little Transformer Book T100 Chi is simply a Windows 8 tablet with a clip-on wireless keyboard. Put together the result looks quite smart and we cannot fault build and finish quality at the price. However it is compromised as a laptop by feeling too cramped in working screen space, with a frustrating sleep-happy keyboard and its tiny awkward keys. And as a tablet it fails to be any more endearing than every other unloved Windows tablet before it.

If you really want a hybrid 2-in-1 laptop, there is nothing necessarily wrong with the T100 Chi. You do get a quality keyboard dock, and the tablet section slots in well, held by two strong magnets. However, you were looking for a tablet and thought a 2-in-1 may be worth the extra cash, you would be advised to invest your money in a larger tablet like an iPad or the Nexus 9.

The Transformer Book Chi T100 is one of the sleekest and lightest 10-inch Windows 2-in-1s available in stores and offers competent hardware, a nice screen with digitizer support and long battery life. However, Asus sacrificed some of its practical aspects for beauty and portability, which makes it a niche product with a rather high price tag, and not the excellent bargain its predecessors were.

Asus has got many things right with the T100 Chi. It’s a great overall form factor and the slim metal design is impressive for the price. The keyboard and trackpad are also excellent compared to most tablet keyboards. However, performance is a little sluggish and battery life is poor too. These are just fundamental problems that no amount of hybrid, 2-in-1 trickery can hide.

Featuring a solid-feeling dockable keyboard, a robust and slim metal design and the productivity perks of Windows 8.1, the Asus Transformer Book Chi T100 is a great mobile productivity aid. However, the awkward Bluetooth 4.0-powered docking process and lack of a full-sized USB port hamper its ability to function as a full-on laptop replacement.

Asus' Transformer Book Chi T100 is a solid transforming tablet/laptop hybrid that's small enough to sling around in your bag, doesn’t cost the earth and Windows 8.1 runs well on it too. It's positively slim and light, but the Bluetooth connecting keyboard might be enough to drive you mad after a while - we certainly kept forgetting to turn it on when we wanted to type in a web address.

Save for a Cherry Trail chip, full-sized USB ports and smaller bezels, the Asus Transformer Book T100 Chi has delivered just about every improvement over its predecessor that you could want. While it's not going to set the world alight, it's a solid upgrade and an attractive proposition compared to a similarly-priced laptop or Chromebook - particularly so if you you need a Windows tablet.

Overall, in context to the market, the T100 Chi has all the hallmarks of a firm favourite. It's affordable as to not break the bank, about as well made as a Microsoft Surface, and will make the ideal work and play partner for those on the go. Like its Chi name suggests, it's a healthy balance of positive and negative.
