With the ZenFone 5Q, Asus has produced yet another reasonable proposition for budget buyers, with speedy performance for the price and a long-lasting (albeit slow-charging) battery. And once again, it's hampered by a laundry list of features that look good on paper but mean almost nothing in the real world.

The ZenFone 5Q, on the other hand, is a “safe” design for a segment that relies on safe choices. It lacks a notch (which in itself is not a bad thing) - but this alone brings up mental images of phones that cost less, of which there are quite a few. Add to this an older version of Android and so-so all-around performance, and it quickly drops to near the bottom of any decision matrix.

The Asus Zenfone 5Q turns out to be a pretty solid performer. Asus’s push for capable photography continues to impress us with its results, and efficiency in the OS has led to improved battery life – something Zenfones have shown a distinct need for in the past.

The midnight black color of the Asus ZenFone 5Q is now available for $299, which is about £225 or AU$400. In the US it sells at Amazon, Best Buy, B&H, Newegg and Abt. You can also buy it in moonlight white from Amazon, B&H, and Newegg.

For a mid-range device, the ZenFone 5Q was able to handle almost everything we threw at it thanks to its Snapdragon 630 chipset and 4GB of RAM. The 6-inch 18:9 display offers a good viewing experience which is good for those who like watching movies or playing mobile games. Imaging-wise, it’s promising and good enough for casual users, but as a selfie-oriented smartphone, it failed to impress. Still, we recommend this phone for its merits, especially if it is priced right.

Tempting pricing is what probably raises the potential for success of the new Asus Zenfones. The Zenfone 5 and 5z impress with notched full-screens and well-specked main camera, while the Lite model has not three but four cameras and a trendy screen. The Max (M1) brings long-lasting Oreo experience and dual-camera on the cheap.

A source at Asus suggested that the ZenFone 5 Lite will also be aggressively priced, aiming to take on the likes of Xiaomi’s Mi A1 and Huawei Nova 2i. It will be the first of the ZenFone 5 series to be available globally, with an expected release date from March onwards.

大尺寸可以让屏幕有更高的分辨率。因而例如字体等的细节将会更丰富。不过另一方面,小屏幕的功耗会较低,而设备也会更轻盈小巧,售价更低。
