Reviews for the Asus ZenFone 6 ZS630KL
The previous year's model was already a solid budget flagship phone - even if the actual release took some time. Now, it's successor is here, offering powerful technological advancements, an innovative flip camera and a large battery. We will ascertain whether or not this is sufficient in the following test.

For $499, the Asus Zenfone 6 is an absolute steal. Many flagships costing $1,000 or more don’t offer the number of features found in the Zenfone 6. Moreover, the new user interface makes this phone a joy to use. The Zenfone 6 may not have wireless charging or an official water resistance certification, but it does have many things that people care about, and even more features power users will appreciate. The headphone jack, expandable storage, notification LED, and quick actions toggle are all nice extras. These features sit on a strong foundation set by the Snapdragon 855 processor and healthy dose of RAM. It’s hard not to recommend this device at the price.

Every phone manufacture is chasing the fully notch-less display but there’s always something that’s been in the way – the camera. ASUS may have just found a way around this issue. The ZenFone 6 by ASUS features a beautiful 6.4” notch-less display whilst maintaining a fully functional front facing camera with a trick. The dual cameras found on this phone are mechanically able to flip around to face you but this does come with a few disadvantages. Is this feature a game changer or a gimmick?

The Asus 6z is a solid follow-up to last year’s Zenfone 5z. Asus has utilized the strength of its engineering department to come up with the flip camera that offers selfies in a quality that no other smartphone can offer today. It offers a far more refined OS than previous seen on an Asus smartphone, one which is fast, smooth and impressively close to the feel of stock Android. The battery life on this phone is exceptional, and the performance doesn’t leave room for complaints. However, the Asus 6z fails to deliver a “wow” factor, that would set the experience of using the Asus 6z, or even owning the 6z apart from any other phone in this price segment. In reality, the best reason to go for the 6z over anything else in its class is the price of the smartphone, its combined performance metrics and the fact that it has a headphone jack. If you’re on a budget and can’t really up-spend on a OnePlus 7T, the Asus 6z really is a very good alternative.

My first impressions of the ZenFone 6 are resoundingly positive. I wish I could have spent a lot more time with the device, and I can’t wait to use it as my daily driver. I was mesmerized by the notchless, bezeless display and I can’t wait to become a true selfie king. While the ZenFone 6 lacks features like an on-screen fingerprint scanner and the best display, these shortcomings likely helped keep the phone’s cost under $1,000 CAD. Speaking of price, Asus has priced the device at $799 for 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. There’s also a model priced at $899 for 6GB of RAM and 128GB of memory. It’s important to note, however, the handset has expandable storage. MobileSyrup will have more on the ZenFone 6, ROG Phone II and other Asus products in the coming weeks.

Boasting some top-end specs, the Asus ZenFone 6 has a lot going for it. Its automatic flip camera is an innovative solution that enables the device to use the same sensor and lens hardware for both front- and rear-facing shots. The image quality of the dual-camera setup is generally good, with nice color, well-controlled noise, and excellent autofocus, although some exposure and white balance instabilities mean it’s not quite a top performer. The lack of a tele-lens also meant lower scores for zoom and bokeh. Video performance is excellent overall, though, making the Asus ZenFone 6 a serious contender for any smartphone video enthusiast.

If you need the best of the best and have the cash to throw at it, a flagship device like the new Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ is really good, but if cash is tight or you simply don’t want to spend $1,000 on a phone you’ll be getting rid of in less than 2 years, the ASUS Zenfone 6 is a phenomenal option. Seriously, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better phone at $500. And even if you do, it definitely won’t be able to match the selfies you’ll get from this flip-up camera. Be sure to jump into the comments and let me know what you think about the Asus Zenfone 6. The phone’s not perfect, but it’s price, unique camera system, and massive battery make it one of my favorite devices of 2019.

Asus provides two versions of the ZenFone 6. The entry-level specification, which we tested, comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. That costs £499, which is a competitive price when rivals such as OnePlus are continuously pushing up their prices. The 8GB/256GB version costs another £100, but even that undercuts the ZenFone 6's competition.

You can get a better camera or a nicer screen for a couple hundred dollars more with the OnePlus 7 Pro. You can spend a couple hundred dollars more than that to get phones that are genuinely luxurious, like the iPhone XS or the Samsung Galaxy Note 10. You can spend way less and get a slower processor or a smaller phone. Even though it seems like your phone choices are dwindling, that’s not really true. There are tons of options.

The flip camera is undoubtedly a defining feature of the ASUS 6z, it not only grabs the attention but certainly stands out from the crowd. With the flip camera onboard, the ASUS 6z manages to deliver a seamless full view display with small bezels and a great screen-to-body ratio, no notch interruptions, whatsoever.

The ZenFone 6 combines the latest hardware with battery life that is leagues ahead of other phones in this segment. The unique flip camera means you get to take selfies with the main 48MP shooter at the back, and there's no cutout at the front. You also get a clean user interface with a ton of customization options and fast updates. Put it all together, and you get a great overall package.

The Asus 6Z is what we would classify as a real all-rounder. It might lack the pizzazz but is a very good offering that will have competition worried. Asus 6Z’s main competition will come from the OnePlus 7 which costs a bit more for similar specs. Asus 6Z is the most affordable phone with the fastest processor in the market. That’s a big plus for the 6Z to go with a sturdy design, impressive performance and more than capable cameras. Not to forget that the 6Z is truly an all-screen display albeit not as good as OnePlus 7. Considering all these aspects, you have to say that Asus might just have a winner on its hands.

Overall, the ASUS 6Z is a good successor to the 5Z at a starting price of Rs. 31,999 for 6GB RAM with 64GB storage version, but the 128GB storage version at Rs. 34,999 is Rs. 3000 more. It is also Rs. 2000 more than the OnePlus 7 128GB model. If you are looking for a flagship smartphone with a good battery life, no-notch screen, smooth performance and a good selfie camera, this is definitely a good choice for the price. If you can spend more for the AMOLED screen, in-screen fingerprint scanner and a splash-resistant body and don’t care about the 3.5mm audio jack or the notch screen, the OnePlus 7 is better. The ASUS 6Z goes on sale starting today, June 26th at 12 noon exclusively on Flipkart. To summarize, here are the pros and cons of the smartphone.

There are more "affordable" flagship phones than ever on the market right now. However, ASUS manages to stand out from the crowd with a focus on battery life, clean, fast software, high-end specs and a unique approach to smartphone photography. There are trade-offs for sure: This is a big, chunky, heavy phone with an average-looking screen that lacks some common features like water resistance.

The Asus 6Z offers a well-rounded camera experience and the biggest advantage of that flip camera is the fact that both rear and front-facing images are extremely detailed, and the versatility of the wide-angle camera can also be utilized on the front. At a starting price of Rs 31,999, it is directly competing with the likes of OnePlus 7 and Honor 20. Both these phones are known to be inconsistent when it comes to the camera performance and Asus 6Z definitely holds an edge over here.

However, if these shortcomings don’t seem major to you, the Asus 6Z is shaping out to be a great option starting at Rs 31,999. The OnePlus 7 retails for Rs. 32,999 and does almost everything that the 6Z does, except for the flip-out camera of course, and the big battery. But the reliability of Oxygen OS and the brand’s fan-base are the biggest threats to what otherwise is a smartphone that does basically everything, and does it well.

Priced at Rs 31,999 for the 6GB RAM and 64GB storage variant, the Asus 6z is a well-packaged product in the midrange segment. Consider this smartphone for its unique motorised flip-camera module, sturdy build, easy-to-use operating system and all-round performance. But the phone’s multimedia handling capability falls short when compared with other smartphones in the segment. This, however, might be improved through a software upgrade in future; until then, it is not the best for multimedia enthusiasts who like streaming videos on the go.

Sadly, the Flip Camera is itself the Asus 6z's Achilles Heel -- despite giving us possibly the world's best front camera performance, the implementation feels vulnerable to daily abuse and if it stops working, you are stuck with a phone that has no front cameras. Asus says that the module is tested to last five years and it's up to you whether you are ready to take the company's words. In India, the Asus 6z rivals the OnePlus 7, Pixel 3a XL and the Honor 20. Compared to all these phones, the 6Z is closer to the OnePlus 7 in terms of performance, compared to the Pixel 3a XL concerning the camera performance and is a solid all-rounder like the Honor 20. Most importantly, it undercuts them all with its pricing and to me, that's a deal you can't miss.

Asus has thought of plenty to do with the rotating camera module and has tried to compensate for not having an immediately available front-facing camera, but it might take some getting used to. The main advantages of this design are that you get a clean, notch-free screen, and very high-quality selfies. On the downside, face recognition isn't as frictionless and the mechanical module does need to be handled with care.

With all this said, I was rather surprised with the ASUS ZenFone 6. It packs a great deal of hardware and has a fun and rather great picture taking flip camera equipped with it. It does have a 1080p display but that does help the killer 5,000mAh go on for days and I don’t think you miss it much. Now what’s the cost? Well the ASUS ZenFone 6 starts at a surprising $499 for the 6GB/64GB model and tops out this version for $699. An unexpected flagship from a company that's an underdog in the smartphone world. But just because Asus isn't a major player in terms of sales volume can't take away from what the Zenfone 6 represents: it feels like a reset; a fresh start for a company looking to attract a new audience. Come in for the cool motorized camera, stay for everything else - that's pretty much what the Zenfone 6 is all about. That is, if you manage to look past its not quite stellar display - other than that Asus has managed to pull off quite the package for a very reasonable price. Easily some of the best possible selfies you can get from a smartphone today is only the flip side to an excellent camera experience across stills and video, in daylight or at night. And you'll have no problem making it through the night either thanks to the biggest battery this side of the midrange. Add to that some nice-to-haves that are increasingly harder to find in the high-end segment like a headphone jack, a status LED, and a dedicated microSD slot, and we can see how the Zenfone 6 makes a really compelling case for itself.

The device’s clever rotating design means that the ZenFone 6 can use a much larger image sensor in its primary camera for selfie images than most dedicated front cameras. Add a well-tuned autofocus system, a dual-LED flash, and an excellent camera software implementation into the mix, and it is no surprise Asus’s new flagship achieves excellent results for detail, noise, color, and several other tests, making it the new number one in our DxOMark Selfie ranking. It’s on par with the very best rivals for still images—but this said, while not perfect, it is in a league of its own for video, making it the current best option for mobile video creators recording selfie footage.

Asus’ latest could easily have been another run-of-the-mill Samsung/iPhone impersonator, so it's refreshing and, dare we say it, quite exciting to see something a little different. Sure, the flippable camera is a fun quirk, but it could be genuinely game-changing for front-facing video recording and shooting at otherwise hard-to-reach angles. We just hope the motor system is as robust as Asus assures us it is. Throw in that heavyweight Snapdragon 855 and 5000mAh battery combo, and you've got a flagship to be reckoned with.

The Zenfone 6 embodies everything that’s great about smartphones in 2019. It doesn’t follow trends set by Apple and Samsung, it doesn’t just adopt the features other manufacturers have chosen, and it doesn’t repeat mistakes that have hurt Zenfone models in the past. Asus has taken a step back, relaxed, and thought about what it needs to do to compete this year. The Zenfone 6 is the result, and it goes its own way in a very special fashion.
