The problem confronting it is that while its parts are very good, the entire sum of them does not gel as well as some of its competitors. We got a much smoother overall experience from two of its closest rivals, the Moto Z2 Play and the Honor 8 Pro, with the latter packing in a higher res display and more consistent cameras as well as a large, if slightly smaller, battery. Also looming on the horizon in this price segment is the OnePlus 3T which has got a price cut and in spite of its advancing months, remains a formidable performer. The ZenFone Zoom S has a lot going for it in terms of individual parts, but unfortunately, nothing that makes it compelling on its own. It is a very good option but stops just short of being a great one.

The ZenFone Zoom S isn’t particularly well built and neither does it have a great camera or zoom feature. To top it off, the price is rather high at Rs 27,000, pricing the device just shy of the OnePlus 5. The device’ competition in this price range includes the Honor 8 Pro and the Oppo F3, both of which, I believe, offer a more compelling feature-set and better camera system.

Its dual camera system, said to be the main highlight of the phone, still needs a lot of work. But then that's the case with every other dual camera phone. Even the mighty iPhone 7 Plus. Take the second camera away, and the ZenFone Zoom S doesn't necessarily disappoint. It does not have a ground-breaking camera -- the Honor 8 Pro is miles ahead for instance -- but let's just say, you won't be buying this phone for its camera alone. In fact, I advise you not to buy the ZenFone Zoom S for its camera. Buy it for the other things that it brings to the table: a premium all-metal design, an eye-popping AMOLED display, a tried and tested mobile processor with good amounts of RAM and internal storage, quite the latest in software and a massive 5,000mAh battery. If I were to be a little more precise, buy it for the all-round package.

So, if you talk about the overall package, the device falls slightly behind the likes of Honor 8 Pro or the Moto Z2 Play. The latter two are known for their good cameras, sleek design and stock Android OS. But if you are a photography enthusiast or a heavy user, the Asus Zenfone Zoom S's camera and battery can be said to be the reason why the smartphone is almost there yet falls short of ticking all the boxes.

The Asus Zenfone Zoom S is the best Zoom phone from Asus till date and even at its slightly higher price tag manages to be good option in the sub-30K smartphone category. It offers a good camera, a decent build quality, dependable battery life and a reliable performance.

The Asus ZenFone Zoom S is another good option in the sub-Rs. 30,000 price segment. It’s also attractively priced at Rs. 26,999, making it a tiny bit cheaper than the Moto Z2 Play. However, its biggest selling feature - the cameras - aren't what they are hyped up to be. While the rear camera does perform well in most lighting scenarios, light metering isn’t often a hit or miss affair, and HDR doesn’t always deliver satisfying results. We didn’t have many complaints about the other aspects of the phone though, as it’s built well, offers decent performance, has a vivid display, and good battery life.

The ZenFone Zoom S has 64GB of storage, which is expandable using a microSD card (up to 2TB). The new Asus device is available in Navy Black and Glacier Silver options. With its price and features, the ZenFone Zoom S will be competing against the likes of the OnePlus 5 and Honor 8 Pro in India. It will be interesting to see whether camera quality will be enough to set it apart from these popular options.

The ASUS ZenFone Zoom S isn't exactly special or new given its design and its choice of features. We’ve already seen how it’s possible to bring a dual rear camera setup to a mid-range device from two years ago. For ASUS, their take of this feature is coupled with a premium-looking body, a good mainstream processor and a Main Camera that’s far better than its predecessor; it is also within the conventional price range for similarly classed/featured phones. Unfortunately, the S$678 ZenFone Zoom Sunder delivers for its price tier as consumers would expect more than just average capabilities.
