Now that we've seen Intel's 'Meteor Lake' Core Ultra CPUs and Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Series, it's AMD's turn in the AI PC spotlight with its Ryzen AI 300 series processors, and the Ryzen 9 HX 370. AMD's first efforts in this sphere – the Ryzen Pro 7000 and 8000 series processors – were underwhelming, with performance from the chips' dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) topping out at a mere 16 Tera Operations per Second (TOPS). That's substantially lower than the 40 TOPS required for Microsoft's Copilot+ PCs, and weedy compared to the 45 TOPS of the Hexagon NPU in the Snapdragon X Elite. The Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 promises significant improvements, with its NPU dishing out up to 50 TOPS.

It's been rebuilt with an all-new material that blends lightweight and sturdy, the touchpad comes with Smart Gesture, it has a great display, and the port selection is solid. It also features an AI processor, though we don't know its full potential as of now.

Unboxing Asus' Zenbook S16 (2024), an impressively skinny 16-inch laptop boasting AMD Strix Point smarts and a gorgeous OLED display. This fresh performance notebook is about as compact as a 16-incher could possibly be, but the Zenbook S16 certainly doesn't skimp on performance or battery life. This is a pre-production sample so I can't benchmark or test the gaming chops properly, but here's an idea of what to expect from the retail model. Full review hopefully soon! Creators will enjoy the colour accurate OLED screen on the Asus Zenbook S16, as well as that AMD Strix Point power. You've also got an excellent keyboard and some nifty AI features, ideal for video chatting and security purposes.

While there’s no question that the ZenBook S 16 is one of the slimmest and lightest 16-inch laptops on the market, we’re unsure about its real-life performance and its implementation of AI workflows. Everything looks good on paper so far–but things may change when it comes to real-life use. There’s also a concern regarding pricing: the starting price of the ZenBook S 16 is $1399 or around Php 83k converted–but that’s for the lower-end version with a Ryzen AI 9 365 processor, 24GB RAM, and 1 TB storage. We’ll not be surprised if the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 hits the six-digit mark, but we hope ASUS gives it a competitive price once it arrives in the Philippines.

AI might be the mot du jour at Computex 2024 (and every other launch event), but when it comes to producing a high-quality laptop, it’s the engineering that matters and, in this respect, the Asus Zenbook S 16 looks to have it nailed. We’ll have to see how the new AMD chips stack up when it comes to performance and battery life, but physically at least, this laptop hits the sweet spot. It has a large, practical display; it’s light and slim, yet stiff and robust feeling; and it looks the absolute business. I can’t wait to get one in for testing.
