Putting aside comparisons with the ZenFone 2, the Deluxe is a decent looking smartphone with good performance. Unfortunately, we aren't thrilled with the camera, and the user interface continues to be chock full of bloatware which is a serious blemish on an otherwise efficient system. For the similar pricing, devices such as the Honor 7 and OnePlus 2 offer a more rounded experience, with similar levels of performance, better features, better cameras and significantly better battery life. While the original ZenFone was a decent option at the time of its launch, the Deluxe feels dated and is outdone today.

Launched last year, the ZenFone 5 was intended to be a smartphone with great cost/benefit ratio. In that, it was successful. Now, ASUS launches this new device, the ZenFone 2, which is very superior to its predecessor, not even being a replacement or a competitor in market. While the ZenFone 5 is a mainstream smartphone, the ZenFone 2 is close, in terms of hardware, to the top shelf smartphones on the market, with a lower cost.

So the Zenfone 2 Deluxe is an update of Asus' flagship phone only in looks but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It succesfully manages to make a plastic design feel a little more desirable without coming across as cheap and tacky. Along with an impressive specs list that's sill in tact and pricing that starts from around £230, this is an Android phone that's set up to punch well above its weight.
