Reviews for the Asus Zenfone 7 Pro ZS671KS
The 6.67 inch ZenFone 7 Pro replaces the budget flagship ZenFone 6 and, like its predecessor, features an innovative flip camera. The phone is equipped with 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage and the Snapdragon 865+, one of the fastest smartphone SoCs around. Find out whether the ZenFone 7 Pro can still be considered a "budget" device in our review.

The Asus ZenFone 7 Pro offers real benefits over its predecessor, but lands in our database closer to the better phones from last year than to this year’s leading contenders. Overall image quality is satisfying and the ZenFone has no trouble producing good-looking photos under most conditions. But the competition at the top is fierce: missteps in the handling of high dynamic range scenes, significant artifacts, and a problematic bokeh mode drag the score down compared to the top performers. Zoom performance is much improved thanks to the new telephoto camera, but its image quality is not up to what we see from the best available today, especially at longer zoom ratios.

The Asus ZenFone 7 Pro’s unique swiveling camera unit means the same sensor and lens are used for capturing rear camera and selfie images. The concept really works out well, with the Asus delivering excellent results in many Selfie test categories, especially texture and exposure for both Photo and Video. The only real downside of using a comparatively large image sensor for selfie capture is a narrow depth of field and therefore slightly blurred backgrounds in holiday or group selfies. Most users will be willing to accept this, though, and overall the ZenFone 7 Pro is an easy recommendation to any selfie shooter, especially vloggers and others who frequently record selfie video clips.

The Asus ZenFone 7 Pro is a very interesting phone, indeed. In a world, where in-display fingerprint scanners, punch-hole cameras, and wireless charging seem to be the trend, this phone dares to do things a bit differently. It trades some of these “modern” features to offer users a hefty 5000 mAh battery, an exceptional 92% screen to body ratio with no notches or cutouts eyesore, and, of course, possibly the best selfie camera out there, for it’s actually the main camera system flipped up.

The Zenfone 7 Pro was met with much excitement by our team - moving bits on phones typically do that with us geeks, and the Asus Flip Camera is about as unique as these come. The whirring action of the flip-up module wouldn't have been enough to hold our attention if it didn't carry capable cameras and there wasn't a fine smartphone attached on the other end.

The Asus Zenfone 7 Pro is an impressive flagship phone with a triple-rear camera array that flips around to the front to improve your selfie game. While it won’t outdo the best photography-focused phones on the market, the top-tier specs make this phone competitive with, if not a step ahead of, most other flagships on the market. Just don’t expect it to handle water or dust well.

So, in the end, it’s the flipping mechanism itself that steals the show, rather than the cameras it’s serving. It’s a striking feature, but it doesn’t guarantee great pictures. The Zenfone 7 Pro is a phone for people who want cameras that flip, not people who want the best cameras in the first place.

It’s kind of hard to position the ZenFone 7 and 7 Pro in the market – if they were perfectly performing devices, then those prices could be rationalised, however as a matter of fact, there’s some lacklustre aspects to them. ASUS has to either really up their camera processing game in the coming months with firmware updates, or quickly reduce the pricing to something that’s closer to the $560 mark at which the ZenFone 6 was released last year.

It's no secret that phone-makers have been experimenting with hiding their front-facing cameras in an effort to deliver an uninterrupted display. Last year saw Samsung launch a family of A80 phones with reversible pop-up cameras. Oppo's Find X ($677 at Walmart) had a motorized pop-up selfie camera and OnePlus followed quickly behind with its own OnePlus 7 Pro ($680 at Amazon). Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Asus was also on board: Its Zenfone 6 had a camera module that flipped from the back to the front (and vice versa) and eliminated the front camera altogether.

The Asus ZenFone 7 Pro looks to be a top-end device, with lots of high-end spec plus some novel features that should entertain users – and it offers a flip camera to ensure that your display is notch-free.

The Zenfone 7 builds on the winning formula of last year's model and brings upgrades in areas where we found the 6 was notably lacking. The OLED screen is a most welcome sight, and Asus didn't just pick any OLED, but went to Samsung and got what appears to be a really nice panel at first glance. The addition of a telephoto camera addresses another pain point with the Zenfone 6 - zoom is now on the table as well, but there are advancements across the board.

The ZenFone 7 and ZenFone 7 Pro seem to present a worthy upgrade over Asus' compelling bargain flagship from last year. We'd hope the new devices offer a relatively inexpensive path to a lot of performance and that trio of unique cameras, but then we don't quite know how much they cost yet.

Overall, the ZenFone 7 feels like a very solid phone with quite a lot of potential. The only thing of note here that I guess would be a negative is that it’s a very large and quite heavy phone, although it has reasonable ergonomics so it’s still pretty usable.

Qualcomm Adreno 650:
