Reviews for the Asus Zenfone 8 Flip
The Zenfone 8 Flip comes with powerful hardware and a well-equipped camera. The fact that the latter can be flipped to the front is also a special highlight. We will find out what Asus' smartphone does in everyday use in our review.

The Asus Zenfone 8 Flip has the largest battery capacity (5000 mAh) in this comparison. Coming with a 30W charger, it has the same global score as the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G (Exynos); but both the Asus and Samsung devices come in behind the OnePlus 9, thanks to its outstanding charging experience and better efficiency. The table below shows the battery capacity, tested charger, display type and resolution, and processor specifications for all three of these Premium devices. The Asus Zenfone 8 Flip does not offer a very good charging experience, but provides more than 2 days of autonomy with moderate use.

Asus continues to push the design envelope with its Zenfone smartphones in 2021. The standard Zenfone 8 launched as a super-compact flagship and is now joined by the larger “Flip” model, featuring Asus’s innovative motorized flip camera solution. Basic phone specs on the 8 Flip remain top-end, boasting a Snapdragon 888 chipset running Android 11; 5G connectivity; and a large 6.67-inch, 2400 x 1080-pixel AMOLED display with a 90 Hz refresh rate.

This phone is priced similarly to the OnePlus 9 and arguably offers a better camera system and a superior battery. You get a 6.67in AMOLED display with 90Hz refresh rate, Snapdragon 888 chipset, 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and that awesome 5000mAh battery. That’s a lot of bang for your buck. It’s less expensive than iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Mini, two of the only handsets that offer superior performance and speed. And it’s considerably less expensive than 2021 Android flagships such as OPPO Find X3 Pro, OnePlus 9 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.

The Asus Zenfone 8 Flip smartphone is a decent smartphone. If you can afford a high price, this phone would be your best choice. If you want to get a good deal, there’s no argument about it. It offers lots of great features like a fantastic screen, brilliant processor, and long enough battery life, and ready for the future 5g support. The innovative flip camera is enough to surprise your neighbors. It is hard to find a better alternative. Asus has a big name so you can expect quality from this phone. But if you want an alternative option you can check the Axon 30 Ultra smartphone.

And finally, the price at RM2999. Oof, I think it’s a pretty okay price but the price gap between the Zenfone 8 Flip and the compact Zenfone 8 is quite justifiable – just that I think ASUS placed too many eggs into the Zenfone 8 basket. It’s still a good phone as it is right now – but having OIS could bring the ASUS Zenfone 8 Flip to perfection. I’m very salty that the fact that there’s no OIS.

The ability to access all three rear-facing cameras on the front of the display is great too, particularly for those that shoot vlogs and take high-quality selfies. There is an issue though; it seems Asus doesn’t want the ZenFone 8 Flip to steal the spotlight from the smaller ZenFone 8. The 8 Flip features a lower display refresh rate and less RAM, and it doesn’t offer any kind of water resistance, optical image stabilisation or a 3.5mm headphone jack – all features of the standard model. The 8 Flip remains tempting, but the decision to ‘clip its wings’ means it can’t truly compete with some of the best flagships out there. It really comes down to whether you want that motorised camera or not.

The ASUS ZenFone 8 Flip is a great flagship for anyone looking for a high-performance device that won’t break the bank in the Philippines. If you’re willing to look past the quirky motorized flip camera then there’s plenty of things to love about this flagship device. Our review for the ASUS ZenFone 8 Flip in the Philippines confirms that it’s a great flagship phone if you’re looking for a device that has powerful internals as well as a big, gorgeous, notch-less screen. While it doesn’t have niceties like wireless charging or IP protection, it’s still a great deal considering how much it is.

The ASUS Zenfone 8 Flip is priced at RM2999, which is a pretty interesting. In practice, it is a great device, especially if you plan on shooting a lot of vlogs, where the flipping camera will come in handy. The 8K30 selfie video capability is not common at all, so that’s where the ASUS Zenfone 8 Flip has an upper hand. The software user experience of the ASUS Zenfone 8 Flip is also quite nice, with truly useful features, instead of just cramming everything and the kitchen sink into it and calling it a day. There are quite a few areas where it doesn’t quite match the competition though. It loses out on some fancier features like OIS, 120Hz refresh rate and ingress protection, all stuff that similarly priced devices are offering nowadays. I do understand why the ASUS Zenfone 8 Flip can’t offer an IP rating, but OIS and a higher refresh rate are both features offered by its own sibling, the ASUS Zenfone 8, which makes the device we are looking at here all the more lackluster as a 2021 flagship.

At PHP 39,995, the ASUS Zenfone 8 Flip offers an interesting balance of features, from the ability to use the main camera for selfies to the gaming chops of its ROG siblings and a relatively slimmed down Android skin with a lot of hardware and software customization. By itself, it can be a compelling option if you can get past the flipping camera. However, with the Zenfone 8 being marketed as the flagship with a smaller 120Hz screen and proper IP certification, it will be up to you to weigh if you like a better selfie camera and a bigger screen than a more compact phone with a better display and proper protection.

In this sense, the Zenfone 8 Flip is neither cheap nor unique, and that might make it a tough sale for a challenger brand like Asus. Unless they somehow make the Zenfone 7 vanish into thin air, it's tough to recommend the new, more expensive model for the few upgrades it offers. The good news is Asus probably wouldn't mind whichever model you pick up - and both deserve a consideration.

Actually, the real alternative here is the previous model - the Zenfone 7/Pro. It offers pretty much the same experience, the design is similar, the size and weight are practically identical too. If you like big and heavy phones, you can check out the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, although its display is spoiled by a cutout, despite having a secondary selfie display in the camera bump.

Upon first impressions, the Asus Zenfone 8 Flip packs a functional camera design, premium build quality, and an incredibly large battery to the table. I was quite impressed with Zen UI as a skin, and the full-screen display is just such a joy to use. Of course, this phone isn’t without its downsides. There’s no wireless charging and the screen tops out at 90Hz. Meanwhile, the camera system, while innovative, isn’t the best of performers even for its €799 price point. Still, the overall experience is relatively premium, but it’s tough to swallow the €799 price tag considering last year’s Zenfone 7 series gives you most of the experience for a significantly cheaper price.
