Still the best small-sized phone on the market in 2023, the Asus Zenfone 9 delivers excellent performance and highly capable camera hardware. However, there are a few minor gripes that let it down, including charging speed, image processing, and its thickness.

For those that want a compact smartphone, but don’t want to compromise on performance, the ASUS Zenfone 9 is a good option, and on paper it offers a great combination of three cameras, all with auto-focus. However, around this price point, you don’t need to spend much more money to find a smartphone with a triple camera setup on the back, giving additional telephoto options, such as the Samsung Galaxy S22 or S23. In terms of image quality, the Zenfone 9 offers some mixed results, not as good as the results you’ll get from Samsung, Google, and Apple. The main camera gives images that just didn’t quite hit the mark, and the camera seemed very prone to lens flare when the sun was in the frame, or even outside the frame. This is a real shame, as the Pixel 7 and Galaxy S22 are both available for less than the Zenfone 9. The ultra-wide angle camera performed well, and for those that want a selfie camera with auto-focus, this could be a good option. Especially if you need a smartphone to have a headphone socket. But for the photographers out there, it’s likely you’ll be happier with a different phone. Video stabilisation is impressive, and this could be another aspect of this smartphone that would make it a strong contender. If the price drops further over time, this could be considered a bit of a bargain, especially for those looking for a compact phone.

The Zenfone 9’s unique design, compact size, Bluetooth and audio features (including a headphone jack!), and hardware gestures combine to offer a package that does enough differently to warrant your attention. ASUS’ minimal Android skin is paired with customizable gestures to make the phone your own without cluttering up the interface. Performance is swift while battery life is long enough to cover essential day-to-day tasks with no problem, but this isn’t a phone built to convert the big-screen power user. The Zenfone 9 is a fine little handset, even if it’s not quite fully fleshed out to give the bigger names much to worry about. The lack of wireless charging, middling dual camera setup, and single storage capacity should give you pause for thought. You can easily find more hardware for your buck on today’s market, and most other phones will be kept up to date much longer, though they might take up a bit more space in your pocket.

The Asus Zenfone 9 is a small phone with a headphone jack that can easily fit in a pocket but that's about where the positives end which is a shame as there's a definite market for compact smartphones but they do need to offer more than just a small size. If you can look past the small display and underwhelming camera performance, you might opt for the Asus Zenfone 9 simply because it's a small phone but for most, the price will be too much of an ask.

Asus’ Zenfone 9 is still worth picking up if you’re looking for a compact flagship that’s a little different. The software extras complement a well-put-together, functional little hardware package. With solid audio, design, and performance firmly under its belt, the handset nails the smartphone fundamentals and then some. However, it’s far from a slam-dunk recommendation. The poor software pledge, so-so camera package, and the absence of wireless charging undercut the handset’s value proposition. Even with a notable discount, even an affordable flagship phone should be looking at several years of more support at this stage. Unfortunately for the Zenfone 9, Asus plans to forget about the handset too soon, and likely so will many prospective buyers.

But overall, as a full package, it doesn't truly, fully deliver on the dream of having all of the features every top-of-the-line device out there has, just in a small package. There are still compromises. And that's why we can only cautiously recommend the Zenfone 9. We think you should look at it side-by-side with the Galaxy S22, and pick the one that has the most upsides and least downsides for your personal use case. That's not to say that the Zenfone 9 isn't a great phone. It is. It could have been better had Asus really gone all-in with the 'flagship specs and features in a small phone' mantra. Perhaps the Zenfone 10 will remedy that in the coming months.

The Asus Zenfone 9 smartphone does things right with no less compromise with the latest features. Though, there’s no denying that there are a few minor flaws with not having wireless charging, a telephoto lens, slow night mode results, and more things. But on the other hand, the phone brings a top-end chipset, long-lasting battery life, and a 3.5-mm jack port are the primary selling point of this phone. Overall, the Zenfone 9 is a compelling flagship offering, which brings a compact design layout, and it is totally worth your money. Aside from this, if you are looking for an alternative smartphone option, we would suggest you go with the Google Pixel 7 is a fabulous choice to look into the future.

If you’re after a compact Android phone with high-end features and tons of grunt then it’s hard to go past the Asus Zenfone 9. It’s not quite a great all-rounder, but it ticks a lot of boxes, such as image stabilisation, a headphone jack and the support for high-quality wired and wireless audio. That said, if you’re willing to accept a handset that’s a fraction wider and heavier than your options at this price point open right up – including the slick Google Pixel 7 and the Samsung Galaxy S22 standard model. They might not be quite as compact, or quite as powerful, but they’re impressive all-rounders which impress in other ways.

Although it’s not the perfect “small” device, and there is a lot of stiff competition at its price points, we really like the ASUS Zenfone 9 and also like the direction ASUS took with this phone. The Zenfone 9’s performance is stellar, it takes very good photos, battery life is good, the textured back provides excellent grip, and the small form factor and gesture controls make it ideally suited for one-handed use. ASUS obviously put a lot of thought into the design and features of the Zenfone 9. For users in the market for a smaller phone, the only real caveats to consider are the lack of a true telephoto camera and wireless charging. We suspect, however, those two things aren’t going to be deal breakers for many folks. The ASUS Zenfone 9 has a starting MSRP of $699 for the 8GB/128GB model, while the 16GB/256GB model we tested here is priced at $799. Order one between today and October 15th as part of ASUS’s pre-order promotion and the company will throw in a set of ROG Cetra True wireless headphones (a $99 value). There are some excellent devices, like the Galaxy S22 and OnePlus 10T available in the Zenfone 9’s price range that offer some additional features, not to mention devices like the Pixel 6, though the Pixel doesn’t perform nearly as well. Still, all of those devices are either bigger or have some caveats of their own.

The Asus Zenfone 9 is one of the most enjoyable-to-use Android phones I've reviewed all year. Its new design is fresh and appealing, performance is blistering, and its compact body will come as a sweet relief to anyone who bemoans the ballooning state of modern Android flagships. Any iPhone users looking to make the switch to Android, meanwhile, will struggle to find a phone that makes the transition any easier. It’s not without its flaws, however, and there’s definite room for improvement. The Zenfone 9 arguably either needs to be a little cheaper, or it needs a little more refinement for its newly elevated asking price. That design, while sharp from most angles, falls short from the front, and the phone lacks wireless charging. Meanwhile the camera, while mostly solid and impressively steady, isn’t top of its class, and throws up some weird artefacts in low-light shooting. It’s still a hugely impressive effort, however, and a phone that faces very little competition within its pint-sized flagship niche.

That pleasantness extends to the experience of using the phone to do day-to-day things. It feels responsive and polished. The built-in speakers are better than average. If I forget to charge my wireless earbuds, I can just plug in wired headphones. The power button even does what it’s supposed to when you hold it down for Pete’s sake! Realistically, the Zenfone 9 is destined for cult classic status in the US. It doesn’t work on all carriers in the US, and the American public has spoken loud and clear that it wants big phones. For not much more money, the Samsung Galaxy S22 is a better choice for most people, with broad carrier support, a telephoto camera on every model, and a solid five-year security support policy to back it all up. I just hope that something like the Zenfone 9 can remain an option in our current duopoly for small phone superfans like me.

In terms of availability and pricing, ASUS haven’t provided any details, retail pricing or availability for the Zenfone 9, however, it is Ausdroids understanding that the Zenfone 9 could be around the same if not similar pricing to the current Zenfone 8 device of 2021. If it is the same price or at least close to, then it could be worth it but without pricing, I honestly can’t say either way if it is worth forking out for the Zenfone 9.

The Asus Zenfone 9 is the compact phone of choice, making few compromises to deliver a flagship experience in a smaller package. There's plenty of power and performance, with good cameras only marred by the lack of telephoto. The design is attractive and the build is quality, including waterproofing. Still, the phone is let down through the software - bloat and app duplication are compounded by relatively short support, with only two years of updates.

The Asus Zenfone 9 is, simply put, the best small phone today. But even if the size thing doesn’t matter, the Zenfone 9 is an absolutely great value, particularly in the North American space. To get a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, a gimbal camera system that really works, a vibrant display, in a well-designed package that’s easy to hold, for just $699? Absolute no-brainer recommendation for most people. I’m glad Asus had the foresight to pivot the Zenfone series to a smaller form factor to differentiate itself from the sea of smartphones because as much as I enjoy how every 2022 flagship is a good performer, I am starting to feel a bit of boredom as they all look and feel the same. The Zenfone 9 is a breath of fresh air.

Back to the question – does the world really need a small superphone? Of course not – it needs climate crisis solutions and honest politicians. Do you need a small superphone though? That’s the real question here. At £699, the Zenfone 9 is one of the lowest-cost Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 smartphones around. It’s the only top-tier compact option on the market with gaming phone power, and could be perfect for anyone sick of the oversized overlords of the Android flagship world. It’s also bursting with value. From the touch-sensitive, customisable Smart Key, to the autofocusing ultra-wide and selfie cameras, and hard plastic shell in the box – the list of value adds is as long as the phone is short. We expected the gimbal-stabilised primary camera to be great across the board – but while its video capture impresses, stills performance is less stunning. We would have also loved wireless charging. Imperfect as it may be though, the Zenfone 9 is a very good, compact phone that checks a lot of boxes left unchecked by the competition.

You have to pay for something small and nice... unfortunately, in my opinion it is quite salty. In our market, Asus ZenFone 9 comes in three versions: 8+128 GB, 8+256 GB and even 16+256 GB. The cheapest model costs 799 EUR, the average version is 849 EUR, and the top model is 899 EUR That's just how much flagships cost at the moment! Nevertheless, I have such a strange feeling that this smartphone could be a little cheaper - then it would definitely be a hit. With prices at the level of competing flagships, well - it tempts primarily with its compactness. Yes, you must admit it, but it is impressive.

The Asus Zenfone 9 is a great little phone at a price you can’t help but be excited about. At the time of writing, the Zenfone 9 is faster than any competitor’s handset in virtually every area. That’s probably because Asus is first out with a mobile based on Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. But that still means that all existing models offer less raw performance than this one. The Zenfone 9, by the way, is a nifty little thing that fits in most pants pockets. The screen is colourful and stylish. But too small if you like watching movies on your phone. Mounting a mobile camera on a gimbal is so unusual that only Asus could come up with it. But it actually works, and it can both stabilise video footage and give sharper stills in the dark. All in all, the Asus Zenfone 9 is one of the most attractive mobile phones right now. It’s unlikely to change Asus’ status as a niche manufacturer. But consider going against the mainstream by buying one.

For us in the US, it’s tough to recommend the Zenfone 9. I really like this phone, and if it had the Pixel’s camera, it’d be my new daily driver. But in the US, it’s tough because we don’t have a release date or a price yet. It is coming to the US, but we don’t know when. And it’ll also only be available unlocked, as ASUS does not have carrier relationships, which means it’s not going to sell super well here. That also means ASUS is likely not in a huge rush to bring it Stateside. But if you are in Asia or Europe and are looking for a good, small and compact smartphone, then look no further than the ASUS Zenfone 9. At €799, it’s pretty competitive. Considering the smallest Galaxy S22 is €50 more. Keep in mind that the €799 price is for 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, not the 16GB/256GB model that we have here.

If small and powerful is what you want from a smartphone, the Asus Zenfone 9 delivers, but it’s not quite the full flagship phone experience in a tiny package some may still crave, and the reason why is pure physics. The size of the battery and the complexity of the camera are constrained due to the size of the phone. You simply can’t fit a whopping battery and six cameras inside. You end up with a compromise. If you don’t care much about a really fantastic, feature-packed camera but want the overt power to play the latest games and multitask to your heart’s content — but in a phone two-thirds of the size of a Galaxy S22 Ultra or Pixel 6 Pro — it’s a strong option. However, if you plan on making full use of the Zenfone 9’s ability, the battery life may not always keep up. The screen, although attractive, isn’t as bright as we’d like either. Asus is very good at making capable, exciting smartphones for small segments of the phone-buying public.

Setting out to make a proper flagship in a tiny body, Asus did a lot of things right with the Zenfone 9, with only minimal compromise. If we have to point out its missteps, those will include the lack of wireless charging (all the bar phones above have it, and so does the Flip) and the missing telephoto camera. These are both more or less understandable omissions, given how both take up valuable space. The rather slow Night mode implementation had to be mentioned, but it's more of a niggle in the absence of other flaws and one that could potentially be fixed in an update. The rest of the Zenfone 9 is actually pretty great, starting with the water-resistant build and eye-catching design. The large circles on the back aren't just for show, and camera performance is respectable with autofocus across all lenses and a particularly impressive video stabilization capability. The latest top-end Qualcomm chipset delivers excellent performance and is also decently efficient, which results in class-leading longevity when coupled with the YoY increase in battery capacity.

The Asus Zenfone 9 is a phone that is proudly different from the others, at least as far as its design is concerned. Its small size and thin aspect ratio, along with its retention of the 3.5mm headphone jack, are unusual choices, and it is undeniably good to see all of these make rare appearances on a high-end phone and broaden the range of options for consumers. From our brief time with the phone, the screen seemed good rather than great, likewise with the camera system, though we need more time with them before we can reach our final conclusion. However, we’re expecting great things from its processor, which has already proved itself on other flagship devices, and the battery too could be highly promising.

The Zenfone 9 is a full-force flagship in a small size, and with remarkably few compromises for it. The 5.9in display makes this one of the smallest phones on the market, especially on the Android side, and comfortably the smallest with specs this strong. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and up to 16GB of RAM mark this as a serious performance phone, though cooling problems do leave that power slightly throttled. The 8+ Gen 1 is also partly to thank for the excellent battery life however, which puts other compact smartphones to shame. The gimbal-stabilised main camera impresses, especially at night, though with a few visual glitches and issues in bright environments it’s clear Asus has some software tuning to do. Some may also miss the variety offered by rivals, especially the lack of a telephoto lens here. Given the phone is so good, it’s frustrating that Asus is only promising two years of support, so this will only suit those who know they’re on a regular upgrade schedule.

Asus has done it again. The $699 Zenfone 9 is a small phone that delivers big performance. By making clever sacrifices (if you perceive a thicker phone as one), the latest flagship carries similar processing power, battery life, and software features as its larger counterparts. What should you watch out for? The underwhelming software update policy, average video recording and audio output, and over-aggressive variable refresh rate are my main call-outs. Here's the thing: besides the tinny speakers, all of those issues can still be solved via future updates. For now, it's just a matter of consumers showing the demand and Asus following up on it.

Time for the final verdict. The Zenfone 9 is a great phone, there's no doubt about it. Whether or not it will be great for you, depends on your specific needs. If you like small phones that pack a punch, the Zenfone 9 could be your dream phone. On the other hand, if large screens and multiple camera systems are your thing, you probable won't find the Zenfone 9 as exciting as other, bigger flagships. But to sum it all up, this phone features an impressive package - the fastest processor out there, a great screen, amazing battery life, surprisingly good speakers, backed by a 3.5mm audio jack, fast and accurate fingerprint scanner, UI tricks to make your experience even smoother, and last but not least, quite a decent price tag.

ASUS says that engineering resources constrains are the reason it can only deliver two platform updates to its phones, but when you consider that all other phones in this category will get at least one more Android OS version update than the Zenfone 9, it is a letdown. That said, there really isn't another device that quite manages to deliver the combination of hardware, cameras, and clean software in such a small chassis, so if you're still on the lookout for a small flagship, your search ends here.

SD 8+ Gen 1:
