As it is, we can only recommend the Chuwi LapBook if you're willing to take a flyer and wouldn't be terribly put out if your $250 laptop suddenly had to be shipped a long ways, for a long while, for replacement or repair. If this would be your only computer to rely on, we'd be way more inclined to recommend shopping for a budget model, likely with a smaller screen, from a domestic e-tailer or a local retail shop. It's a lot easier to schlep a wonky laptop back to your local Best Buy or back to Amazon.com or Newegg.com than to ship it back across the Pacific.

We just wished it had more connectors and dropped that proprietary power socket. Oh, and don’t fork out extra for the faster processor, the price difference is far too big to justify the jump in performance.

Attractive and slow. Chuwi's MacBook Air clone certainly looks nice and could easily pass as an Ultrabook twice the price. Dig a little deeper, however, and the small flaws quickly begin to crack.

The LapBook Air 14.1 is a mixed bag. On one hand you have a really cool design and some decent specs (that display is especially attractive for an entry-level laptop), but on the other hand performance is not quite where it should be. It's currently priced at $443 on GearBest, which puts it on the same level as some offerings from established brands like Acer, Dell and HP and makes it hard to recommend.

Overall, this is a pretty decent unit but does have some drawbacks. If you're going to be using this at home or with an external mouse, it might be the perfect option, but for me, I think when you start creeping up towards the $400 price range, there are better and more reliable options from big name brands. Sure, the other options from the likes of Dell, Toshiba, and others aren't as svelte compared to the LapBook Air, but they are certainly more powerful, probably more reliable out of the box, and when something does go wrong, you'll probably have an easier time trying to get it fixed. This was again a good attempt by Chuwi, but it will need to step things up and take things a step further to make this a product that I could fully recommend.

The Chuwi LapBook 14.1 packs in modest internals in a premium-looking chassis. Then there’s the impressive display as well as a brilliant battery life making it a well-rounded package.

At this price range, yes even with the shipping, the Chuwi LapBook looks like a good value for money device. For now you need to buy it from an international e-commerce player, but Chuwi is in talks Indian e-tailers to bring the device here directly. If you are looking for a good notebook that helps you consume and create content, then the LapBook seems like a good buy, though with an element of risk attached to it.

In closing, I have to admit that the last thing I thought I’d be doing is writing a recommendation of this particular laptop. These Chinese “grey market” electronics are always tough to gauge, and jumping for one is usually a lesson in severe disappointment. It’s like buying the generic version of your favorite cereal; most of the time you just wished you’d have bought the name you recognized. Chuwi is proving itself to be different, and (trackpad woes aside) the new Lapbook is a pretty fantastic example of that. If you’re looking for a full-fledged Windows 10 notebook to carry out basic to intermediate tasks and don’t want to wreck your wallet, it’s a solid option. The LapBook 14.1 retails for around $299, though you can find it for as cheap as $239. Even at that higher price point it’s a pretty good deal, and if you manage to snag it for less than that it’s just icing on the cake.

Chuwi already make a number of other devices, mostly 2-in-1s, and their next release, the Hi13 looks set to eclipse everything we've seen before. But for now, as a ‘value proposition' it demonstrates everything that's great about buying grey.

Chuwi's LapBook is not the fastest laptop you can buy by any stretch of the mind, but it is both capable for most daily tasks and more up to the job than most cheap Windows 10 laptops. The full-HD screen and full-size keyboard are highlights, as is the incredibly quick startup, but you'll want a proper mouse to get around that awful trackpad. Recommended for those looking for a usable Windows 10 laptop at an attractive price.

The LapBook 14.1 is a great option for the money. It has impressive build quality, performs well, has good battery life, and a clean Windows 10 setup. Initially, I mentioned that it retails for $299.99, but if you want to get it you can find it for much less. What's not to like?

How much notebook do you need? The affordable Chuwi LapBook 12.3 is designed for everyday tasks. The metal chassis, the high-resolution display, as well as the silent operation are advantages of the laptop.

Although it might look good, it has a fundamental flaw where its core functionality is compromised. Sure, I made due with it for a week, but many times it would bring me to life's edge and would have me altering my usual behaviors to avoid using the trackpad as much as possible or not making any complex actions with it. This is perhaps the laptop's Achilles heel and is what kills the experience as a whole for me. Maybe the SurBook or LapBook Air will fix this issue, bringing consumers a laptop worth bragging about.

This all adds up to a pretty interesting option for anyone considering a Surface Pro 4. For the price — the Surbook is up for pre-order at a price of $428.99, with the keyboard dock adding another $90 to that total, along with an optional stylus for slightly more — it’s less than half of the price of Microsoft’s lower end Surface Pro 4. I wouldn’t recommend it as a substitute for an i7-equipped Surface Book — if you’re in the market for a multi-tasking monster, this isn’t the hybrid for you — but the Surbook is an incredible value for a mid-range hybrid.

The LapBook 12.3 takes everything that made the 14.1 great, and steps it up a notch. But the amazing thing is that it does this, and doesn’t take the price and put this laptop into another category. The Chuwi LapBook 12.3 isn’t going to be able to compete with Ultrabooks on many fronts, but it does offer a lot of an Ultrabook’s appeal in its thin, light, and sleek design, but with a much, much lower price point. Not very long ago, buying a laptop for under $500 meant it was going to offer several severe compromises, but Chuwi has proven, again, that a low-cost computer doesn’t need to be that way. If you’re ok with the smaller display on the LapBook 12.3, you end up with an amazing laptop for the price.

The Chuwi LapBook 12.3's uncomfortable keyboard, error-introducing touchpad and dim (though high-res) display place tough, nearly insurmountable hurdles in front of any user given the notebook. Still, we admire it for its sturdy-feeling magnesium aluminum design, which could fool an uneducated customer.

It might appear to be the better of the two on paper, and physically the more premium device with its metal build and high-res screen, but we couldn’t recommend the Chuwi LapBook 12.3 over the LapBook 14.1 - the instant startup times, improved battery life and larger screen of the latter has won us over. But while it’s no better than the larger LapBook, the LapBook 12.3 remains an excellent budget buy if you’re looking for a cheap Windows 10 laptop.

The Chuwi LapBook 12.3 is a definite upgrade from the LapBook 14.1, and should Chuwi solve the two outstanding problems we’ve highlighted, it will have a sure-fire winner on its hands. The Jumper EZBook 3 Pro or the Yepo N737A, both of which we’ve yet to review, are the closest rivals in terms of specifications, but still can’t offer the same 5-megapixel display.

As it stands right now, I can only recommend the Lapbook Air to those who value design and portability above all else. Other buyers looking to spend around $450 should look into some of the systems from Dell, HP and Acer I mentioned earlier, which offer more performance for the price.

The Chuwi LapBook SE is one of the most exciting budget laptops from China. The LapBook SE has an aluminum case, a Gemini Lake quad-core processor, eight hours battery life and an easily accessible M.2 drive bay for SSDs. In this review, we will determine where Chuwi has made savings to keep the LapBook SE’s price below €350 (~$402).

The only real downside to the Lapbook SE is that you will have to buy it sight-unseen from a Chinese reseller like AliExpress. But when you are getting so much laptop for so little money that's a hurdle I'd be prepared to jump over.

Chuwi has proven it can make a solid notebook. The LapBook Plus is a budget laptop with premium construction and with plenty of ports and a 4K display, which you rarely see in a sub-$500 laptop. It also goes pretty light on the bloatware. However, weak specs make it hard to take advantage of 4K content -- unless viewing is the sole task. The LapBook could use a few component tweaks and a new set of speakers, as these changes would help the company compete more fiercely with major manufacturers. For $349, you can get the Acer Aspire 5 which offers better performance and battery life. But if you're looking to get a 4K display for cheap, you can't go wrong with the Chuwi LapBook Plus.
