Imagine for a moment that the Chromebook Pixel and one of Dell’s high-end Latitude laptops had a secret liaison – the product of that illicit relationship would surely be the Chromebook 13. Carbon fibre stretches across the lid, the base is armoured in silky-feeling charcoal-grey metal, and every corner rounds to a perfect curve. This is every inch the subtly stylish business laptop; it just so happens to run Chrome OS.

Still, if ChromeOS is what you want, the Dell Chromebook 13 7310 is worth considering. Before you part with your cash, though, I would suggest you just look at the sort of thing you could be getting if you were to buy a Windows laptop. It may be that you are sure you want ChromeOS, which is fair enough. But there are a lot of other options out there than can simply do a lot more for the same money.

This is a confusing machine. On one hand it’s an impressive performer that’s sturdily built and conveys a certain amount of style and professionalism. But we can’t shake the feeling that where the Chromebook Pixel had a few wow factors - the display and industrial design - that almost tempted you to spend £1000, the Dell just seems expensive. That’s unfair in some ways, as you’re getting a fast and durable device that will be up for the rigours of the road, which in the case of most businesses is far more important than how it looks or makes you feel. If a Chromebook is what you want, rather than a premium PC or MacBook, then the figures and the bottom line says the Dell, but our hearts want the Pixel. Maybe that’s why we’re not businessmen.

The Dell Chromebook 13 is a great looking little notebook that, at first glance, is almost indistinguishable from other brands of business class systems. It offers strong performance and is ready for both work and play. However, its weight is noticeable after an extended period of time, and you pick up a competing system such as the HP Chromebook 13, which offers some better features, for roughly the same amount of money.

The Dell Chromebook 13 is affordable quality in the Chromebook space. It’s sturdily built, well-configured, and its performance is competent, while its battery life is outstanding. You wouldn’t buy this for your kids, but for professionals and Chromebook aficionados, it’s currently the strongest buy.

The Dell Chromebook 13 7310 is a very impressive Chrome OS laptop. But unless you’re developing a particularly demanding in-house hybrid cloud app and need the client hardware to run it, you’re better off skipping this particular configuration in favour of one of Dell’s cheaper, better value versions of the 7310.

The Dell Chromebook 13 offers a better build quality and performance compared with most chromebooks. The increased speed is useful if you're a professional running a lot of Chrome apps and services simultaneously, and the price, while higher than most chromebooks, is still less than the Google Chromebook Pixel. The Google Pixel is the superior system, offering extra ports and features with longer battery life, but it's even more expensive, making it less appealing for businesses buying in large numbers for employees.

With their potent mixes of performance, portability, quality and value, these two devices are the most advisable Chromebook purchases for most people right now. The only real question is how much you're looking to spend.

From its magnesium-alloy deck to its soft-touch finish, the Dell Chromebook 13 shreds the conventional wisdom that Chrome OS is only for cheap, disposable machines. Add in an excellent keyboard and awesome battery life, and you have a great machine for consumers as well as business travelers.

I recommend the Dell Chromebook 13 because of the price and the simplicity. If you need a second laptop that you use mostly for work on the Web, this one is a good bet. It’s not quite as well-made as the Pixel, but definitely a step up from other Chromebooks.

It's a good time to be in the market for a Chromebook. That's because laptops like Dell's newest model go a long way toward dispelling the notion that Chromebooks are cheap, compromised machines that don't have the hardware or software to cut it as your main computer. Chrome OS will likely always lack some features or applications that Windows or Mac options offer -- but for a lot of people, living life in the browser is becoming more and more viable every day.

The Chromebook 13 is pricier than some of the other Chromebooks on the market, but it is still toward the lower end of the pricing spectrum when it comes to laptops in general. If Chrome OS is adequate enough for your needs, this particular model sits toward the top of Chromebooks you should consider. The crisp, bright screen, backlit keyboard, carbon fiber lid, and slim design all strike the perfect balance between form and function.

One of the features that users of the Chromebook 11 will miss on the Chromebook 13 is that the keyboard is no longer spill-resistant. This is an odd omission for Dell considering that many enterprise notebooks come with a spill-resistant keyboard. The feature was included on the Chromebook 11 because students are a lot tougher on their devices, said Kirk Schell, Vice President and General Manager of Commercial Client Solutions at Dell. Schell expects that enterprise customers will be less harsh on their devices.
