Reviews for the Dell Inspiron 15-7537
Long-lasting all-rounder. An economic Core i7 processor and a dedicated Nvidia GPU topped with a lot of storage and wrapped up in an elegant aluminum casing - this is the recipe for a versatile and high-performance multimedia laptop. But is it enough to justify the ambitious price of almost 1200 Euros (~$1619)?

The Dell Inspiron 15 7000 is a fine choice for anyone looking to buy an attractive, powerful laptop that's not quite as pricey as a premium Ultrabook. With its quad-core CPU, 16GB of RAM and Nvidia GeForce GT 750M graphics, it can easily handle intensive multimedia tasks, like video editing or playing lighter 3D games. Moreover, the laptop's excellent keyboard and trackpad make doing serious productivity work a breeze.

Notebooks like this are often dubbed desktop replacements. In this case, unless you're an avid gamer or intensive video or animation editor, the phrase fits. As a consumer-grade computer, the Inspiron is powerful, capable, and good-looking enough to be a first-class choice. To the question whether it's worth over $1,100, we say—yes indeed.

The Dell Inspiron 15 (7537) is the equivalent of a utility player in baseball. It's solid, and will work well, but it doesn't quite distinguish itself in the crowd. Sure, it plays games better than rivals, but if that's important to you, there are plenty of faster gaming laptops to choose from. With its flashy aluminum exterior, you might expect The Inspiron 15 to stand out on battery life, performance, and weight, but it just doesn't. The Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus remains our high-end ultrabook Editors' Choice, due to its QuadHD+ screen, speedier SSD-only configuration, and more stable screen hinge.

The lower-end version of the Inspiron 15 7000 costs about as much as the lower-end Inspiron 14 7000, and the same goes for the higher-end versions of both as well. That leaves us with an interesting set of choices. As far as the lower-end ones go, it's a fairly simple toss-up between portability and drive speed on one hand and connectivity and graphics horsepower on the other. You're saddled with an unfortunate low-res screen either way, so the particular variant that we've tested today comes out looking a bit unappealing.

Featuring solid performance in an even more solid body, the Inspiron 15 is an appealing computer technically. For half the price of a comparable Dell XPS 15, the price tag is much more inviting as well, though it lacks the XPS’s amazing screen and SSD. As a general use machine, the Inspiron 15 would likely be good for college students who need a portable, affordable, and sturdy computer for work, media and some games. Compared to other Ultrabooks on the market, though, the Inspiron 15 doesn’t stand out too much in any particular category beyond value, relegating it to a general use desktop replacement option more than a machine specialized for gaming, graphics work, or other particular tasks.

As we mentioned at the beginning of this review, the Dell Inspiron 15 7537 walks a very fine line between mainstream and high-end system. It costs way too much to not provide a great experience, but it’s also not expensive enough to have all the bells and whistles of a flagship machine. Overall, the Dell Inspiron 15 7537 succeeds – but it’s not going to be a fit for all users.

The Inspiron brand name, which is typically reserved for Dell’s entry-level systems, doesn’t do the Inspiron 15 7000 Series justice. This system is undoubtedly the reason why the XPS 15 is so expensive. In some areas, like display quality and battery life, the Inspiron actually out-performs the XPS 15.

The Inspiron 7537 has a nice display and competent overall performance, and it's a very good gamer. But its irksome chassis flex and weak input ergonomics diminish the overall experience. Given the specs, good looks, and price tag, I was expecting more.

With its sexy design, strong performance and above-average battery life, the Inspiron 15 7537 has all the makings of a quality multimedia laptop. The graphics performance is particularly strong for this class of system. For the price, though, we would have liked a brighter screen and a less-mushy keyboard.

The new Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series will set you back a cool Rs 68,990, which is quite expensive for what’s on offer. We say this, because the HP Envy Touchsmart 15 has the exact same configuration but with more RAM (8GB) and storage (1TB) for Rs 64,000. It’s also quite a bit lighter as well at 2.1kg. The Dell 7000 does make a good case for itself with an excellent build and industrial design, good gaming performance, decent audio and long battery life. However, all of this is moot when you look at the lacklustre display and the non-ergonomic keyboard.

Dell's design philosophy for the Inspiron 15 7000 seems to be a nice stylish system that focuses on efficiency rather than performance. This is apparent in the choice of a lower voltage processor that helps extend battery life but makes the system underpowered given its size and competitors.

So it seems that corners are obviously being cut in some of the most surprising places, but Dell does have the good grace to provide a year’s subscription to MacAfee LiveSafe, probably to make savings on virus-related tech support calls. However, the version of Microsoft Office shipped with the Inspiron 15 is a mere trial. Not only that, you’ll have to rely on Windows Essentials for any multimedia creation exploits. Even that forged metal casing isn’t all encompassing as the underside is plastic.

It's quite good to see Dell refresh the look and design of the Inspiron range of notebooks, starting with the 7000 series, both for the 14-inch and 15-inch versions. The resemblance to the much more premium XPS range is uncanny, and that is a good thing. It offers stable performance and very good battery life. But, the 15.6-inch display is still stuck at 1366 x 768 pixel resolution, which is a disappointment. But for that one shortcoming, the Inspiron 15 7000 is a very capable machine. We would recommend this for the good build, stable performance, much improved keyboard and very good battery life.

The $699 Dell Inspiron 15 7000 offers an elegant aluminum design, a responsive touch screen and impressive battery life. The notebook also provides solid audio, graphics and overall performance. What prevents this 15-incher from grabbing a higher rating is its shallow keyboard and dimmer-than-average display.
