Loaded mobile workstations are hellaciously expensive because they're built for jobs where their price is a rounding error in the eventual return. The Precision 5690 is no exception, though it's positioned one slot below the tippy top where gargantuan storage and error-correcting code (ECC) memory are required. The Dell Precision 5690 earns our Editors' Choice award among high-end mobile workstations for putting maximum power into a reasonably portable PC package.

I have to say the Dell Precision 5690 is an incredible laptop. It’s stacked with powerful components, crafted to help you design the next architectural wonder, a futuristic sports car, or the next top-selling AAA video game. Or if you’re a photographer or cinematographer, the laptop can carve through those big editing projects like a hot knife through butter. And when you’re not working hard, use that beautiful OLED display and punchy speakers to watch some of your favorite movies. Throughout the course of my testing, the Precision 5690 rarely faltered in performance. And I’m never going to say no to nearly 11 hours of battery life. If security is a major selling point, Dell offers several options to keep your data secure. It’ll cost you though. That’s one of the biggest drawbacks of the Dell Precision 5690.
