Every convertible design has its trade-offs but the XPS 13 2-in-1 is the most attractive take we’ve seen on the idea. Dell has created an uncompromising laptop that just happens to also offer the convenient option of flipping around into tent or tablet mode. Of course, if you have no use for the folding design, you can save money by choosing a regular Dell XPS 13 or a Surface Laptop with a taller, sharper screen. Conversely, if you plan to use tablet mode on a regular basis, you might find the Surface Pro 7 suits you better: it’s lighter and doesn’t have a keyboard sticking out of the back. But for many users, we suspect the idea of a high-quality touchscreen system that can occasionally be transformed into other modes will hit the sweet spot. Even if you’d usually turn your nose up at a convertible, you might find it hard to resist the charms of this fast, stylish and portable machine.

The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 retails in Australia from AU$2,038.99 (US$999.99 in the USA for a lower-spec i3 version that's not available in AU). Price as tested: AU$3,798.99 (US$1,699.99 as it's currently on special in the USA. Aussies might find it significantly cheaper to buy a plane ticket AND a laptop). Budget extra for a microfiber cloth; one clear drawback of these 2-in-1 jiggers is that your screen will always have smudgy fingerprints on it.

The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is close to being the perfect convertible 2-in-1 laptop. It's got a premium design, flaunts Intel's new Ice Lake chip which is capable of casual gaming and has an absolutely gorgeous display. Dell's determination to convert to the new USB-C ports may frustrate those who don't want to use adaptors to hook up old peripherals and it's unfortunate how much the 4K panel saps the battery, but otherwise it's difficult to find much wrong with this superb portable.

There’s a lot to unwind on Dell’s new XPS 13 2-in-1. The first is the performance front. Yes, you can argue (and we’d tend to agree) that performance in an ultraportable laptop is secondary—but it’s also something worth rating. You are, after all, paying extra money for that Core i7 over a Pentium for a reason, right?

Thanks to all that new tech, Dell's latest represents a substantial shift in the age-old performance/mobility trade-off. The CPU performance gains over Whiskey Lake-based 8th generation Intel processors are significant and meaningful. However, pairing those gains with significantly enhanced efficiency is downright impressive. Add to that a near-doubling of performance in graphical tasks, and there's a ton to love about the new Dell XPS 13 7390. This is the first time in quite a while that you can get more of both without taking a second mortgage out on your home. On top of that, this system is a real looker and very lightweight while being durable and versatile. If you've been hanging onto an older business-class notebook, it's time to consider and upgrade. To sum up this laptop's performance with Intel 10th Gen Core CPUs we'll borrow a line from Seinfeld: they're here and they're spectacular.

The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is possibly the best 13-inch convertible on the market, hands down. It solves some major pain points of previous generations, mainly having to do with performance. Of course, the webcam finally being above the display instead of beneath it is a big plus. My two biggest complaints are that it doesn't ship with the pen, and that there's no IR camera. For the pen, it's a real shame that a premium PC like this doesn't come with it. I'd expect that kind of cost-cutting from an Inspiron, but not an XPS. Of course, Microsoft sells the pen separately on Surface PCs too, so I guess this is acceptable. The bit about the IR camera isn't a big deal to me. It has a fingerprint sensor, and frankly, I'm only logging into the PC once per session.

Dell’s XPS 13 2-in-1 is more than a companion to the excellent XPS 13 -- in many ways, it’s the sequel. It’s incredibly thin, impeccably designed and powerful enough to go toe-to-toe with any ultraportable. The fact that it can twist into a few different positions is a nice bonus.

The XPS 13 2-in-1 delivers everything a cutting-edge ultraportable laptop should: excellent design and build quality, proficient computing performance, and long battery life. Its minor keyboard and fingerprint reader flaws keep it from earning the outstanding five-star rating that its clamshell XPS 13 sibling did, but it's nevertheless clearly the best convertible 2-in-1 laptop you can buy right now.

With a stunning display, long battery life and zippy Ice Lake performance packed into a gorgeous and portable chassis, the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is at the top of the convertible class. However, its MacBook-like keyboard might be too shallow for some, and its limited port selection might force you to live the dongle life. If you want a more comfortable keyboard, louder speakers and an included stylus, the HP Spectre x360 ($1,049 starting) is a solid alternative. But if a great design, a movie-worthy display and top performance are your priorities, the XPS 13 2-in-1 delivers big.

The XPS 13 2-in-1 is a monster in a small package. Its slim design is jampacked with powerful performance, a superbright 16:10 display and an excellent battery life. Unfortunately, you might find it difficult to get used to the shallow keyboard and the less-than-desirable number of ports. If you're looking for a laptop with a better keyboard and more ports, than the Razer Blade Stealth is perfect for you. For $1,599, you'll also get strong graphics performance and better audio than on the Dell. However, the XPS 13 is not only one of the best 2-in-1 laptops around, but also one of the best laptops currently available.

The XPS 13 7390 2-in-1 will be available in black with carbon fibre or silver with woven fibreglass, and we really liked the quality of the material that we were able to spend hands-on time with. The body is made out of a single block of aluminium. The design also features narrow screen borders with a webcam still embedded above the screen, which is something that many of Dell's competitors have not managed to achieve. There are two Thunderbolt 3 ports and built-in Wi-Fi 6 as well as a microSD card slot and 3.5mm audio socket.

Perhaps the best feature is the sensible positioning of the camera. Like with the new Dell XPS 13 laptops, Dell has come to its senses and moved the webcam to the north side of the display, meaning whoever you’re videocalling won’t be staring at your chin the whole time – previously, Dell had mounted cameras under the south bezel, which allowed for rather unflattering views of your face. Despite this move, the bezel here is very thin – you’d be hard pressed to spot the camera sensor at a glance. I barely even noticed it was there initially.

We won't know just how well the new 10nm Intel chips perform until we get the XPS 13 2-in-1 into the office for a proper review, but on paper this looks like a very capable machine. Strong specs combined with the best of Dell's already strong XPS design language mean that not only does this look like a good convertible, it might even dethrone its clamshell cousin from the top of the laptop world.

After spending two weeks with the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, I had no doubt that this is one of the best notebook computers that I’ve reviewed to date. Dell has successfully redesigned their XPS 2-in-1 and made it even more usable than ever. In terms of the machine’s usability and design, even if I had to nitpick, there just simply wasn’t anything much that’s worth complaining about. Everything just works.

Dell has made incremental improvements to its XPS notebooks in recent years and the newest XPS 13 2-in-1 is easily the best XPS convertible notebook yet. Having watched the Dell XPS 13 evolve over the past several years, I really thought we had reached the end of the line in terms of possible improvements. The 2019 version had a super-slim bezel, good performance at a decent price, 4K screen options, and was more of a major step forward, solving a long-time engineering problem by putting a super-tiny webcam up on top of the screen, instead of underneath it.

Dell has seemingly pulled out all the stops for its flagship 2-in-1 laptop for 2019, crafting what will likely be its most versatile and powerful mobile computer to date. Not only is this Dell’s first laptop to use a 10nm CPU, but it’s the first to adopt Dell’s new 16:10 display aspect ratio and new keyboard technology. That’s a lot of new ground covered in a single device.

The XPS 13 2-in-1 starts at $999.99, which is very competitive, and although that model does ship with just 4 GB of non-expandable RAM, it does at least offer 256 GB of storage. Realistically customers should opt for the i5-1035G1 / 8 GB / 256 GB model which does jump the price up to $1299.99. As configured for the review unit, which is the i7-1065G7 / 16 GB / 512 GB, the price is $1699.99; but the added RAM, storage, and the top-end processor with the G7 GPU does add a lot of performance as well.

Overall, the XPS 13 2-in-1 is the computer I’ve been wanting Dell to make — more daring and interesting than the staid standard model, but still maintaining the qualities that have made the XPS 13 a perennial contender. The 2-in-1 makes no compromises when it comes to performance, is just as compact and portable as the standard XPS 13, and has a more usable display. If the low-profile keyboard doesn’t stop you in your tracks, the XPS 13 2-in-1 is the best XPS 13 to buy this year, and perhaps one of the best 13-inch laptops you can buy, full stop.

At this point, we're just comparing two fantastic portable PCs though. You can't really go wrong with either. The XPS 13 is going to provide a great all-around experience, and yes, it's a bit lighter and more inexpensive than the 2-in-1. While Dell was focussed on certain aspects for its XPS laptops until last year, this year it seems to have aimed the device for a wider set of audience. With a good IPS display, sleek and premium design, top of the line processor, impressive battery life and some extra features such as good speakers, fingerprint-laden power button and more, the XPS 13 (2019) seems like a laptop that has something for everyone. It can be used by power users for media consumption and even for playing light games. However, the device seems most ideal for on-the-go users who like to get things done while travelling or commuting.

The six-core XPS 13 is a strange computer. It feels like a holdover until something better is available in both design and internals. That first part probably isn’t too far off, since CES 2020 is just about a month away, but it’s hard to say how long it will be before Intel introduces Ice Lake chips that have six cores, a 10-nanometer die, and the improved Iris Plus Graphics. Once that happens, then we’ll have some real performance jumps in the thin and light category to celebrate.

In our review of Dell’s last XPS 13 - which ran on 8th Gen Intel hardware - our biggest complaint was that it felt like a more advanced CPU was just around the corner. Now that that’s played itself out, the new XPS 13 easily cements itself as one of the best professional work laptops you can buy. It’s got an effortlessly beautiful display, premium-yet-prepared design smarts and delivers close to the best performance in a laptop of its class. You just have to be willing to make the jump to USB Type-C. If you are, I doubt that there’s any aspect of the Dell XPS 13 that’s going to disappoint.

Look, I got my own mother an XPS 13 three years ago, and it’s still going strong, just as it should. With the improved design, updated performance, and beautiful display, the latest XPS 13 builds on the pedigree that Dell has cultivated over the past few years, making a system that is easily one of the best on the market.

The XPS 13 7390 excels in all the usual areas including display, performance and, of course, its design. That said, we cannot recommend purchasing this particular model. In particular, its entire reason for being lies with the inclusion of a 10th-gen Intel CPU, but it’s barely an improvement of the 8th-gen chip fitted into the early 2019 edition. While the late 2019 Dell XPS is excellent in its own right, users are better off either grabbing its predecessor, or better yet, holding out for the 2020 XPS 13 - which promises key design changes in addition to more impressive hardware.

As always, the XPS 13 7390 is an amazing laptop to have. Not only it is one of the most portable notebooks on the market, but it also provides performance beyond the expectations of a ULV processor. As we saw in the temperature segment of this review, the laptop was actually able to maintain 2.70 GHz of sustained clock speed – a feat that is still hard for some gaming notebooks on the market.
