If this is the future of Dell’s XPS family, then bring it on. The new keyboard deck design with its hidden touchpad, huge keycaps and capacitive touch bar gets a solid thumbs up from me and the updated chassis design breathes new life into the classic XPS formula. Wrap all that up with Intel’s 12th generation CPUs, an excellent touchscreen display and powerful speaker system, and Dell truly has a winner on its hands. The middling battery life sets it behind the M2 MacBook Air but this is otherwise a superlative alternative.

A few days back, I received a message on Linkedin from a senior executive who wanted my advice on a premium laptop. I must have suggested one or two options but he kept telling me how he is averse to change when it comes to laptops. That conversation made me realise one thing: not every consumer is ready to trade comfort and familiarity for a notebook with experimental design and features. When I reviewed the XPS 13 Plus, I got the impression that Dell manages to strike a balance between the aesthetic of thin-and-light laptops while somehow modernising it with their own flair that will in turn resonate with their most loyal high-flying executives. The XPS 13 Plus is a fusion of sleek looks and fantasy but still builds on the formula of top-of-the-line compact laptops the XPS line is known for.

The new Dell XPS 13 Plus features some immediately noticeable changes over its predecessors, the first being the keyboard. The capacitive touch bar that replaces the function keys didn’t feel like it served any additional purpose and felt more like a gimmick. The hardware inside the XPS 13 Plus is top-of-the-line, including the display, and Dell has put in an effort to wring more performance out of the XPS 13 Plus, including a performance mode that makes the laptop fans faster (and louder), but this does impact overall battery life as well. We certainly felt the lack of IO port options, even though the two remaining ports are Thunderbolt 4 ports (which are quite versatile). Overall, the Dell XPS 13 Plus is still a beast of a machine but it felt a bit lacking in certain aspects.

The new XPS 13 Plus model offers a beautiful design, the edge-to-edge keyboard is an absolute triumph, and the OLED display is an eye-bathing treat. It’s not the most practical laptop for serious or power users, however, thanks to underwhelming battery life, a poor port selection, and a needlessly gimmicky approach to function keys.

The Dell XPS 13 Plus is an extreme computer. It’s slimmer and lighter than most, and design-wise, it’s quite spectacular. It’s also just as fast as bigger and heavier laptops, and the 4K touchscreen is nice and sharp. When generous amounts of SSD and DDR5 RAM are added, a hefty price point is inevitable. If you can afford it (or if your company pays for it – which they’ll later deduce from your taxes), you’ll get a computer that’s bound to get some attention at the conference table. The invisible trackpad is a wild idea that, in my view, makes operation unnecessarily cumbersome. At least until you get used to hitting the right spot with your finger. The comparison with the Apple MacBook Air is unavoidable. The performance is on a par with it. And if you scale back the RAM, storage and screen resolution requirements, you can easily find a Dell XPS 13 Plus that matches the MacBook on both price and specifications. But it’s in this super edition that it’s most interesting.

The Dell XPS 13 Plus (9320) is a futuristic Windows laptop with a glamorous, sleek design and packs very impressive performance in a very compact chassis. And that OLED display and comfy keyboard are both impressive. However short battery life and some overheating under heavy load will give some pause.

We had an honestly different experience using this laptop. It is not often when you find yourself trying to get used to a touchpad, and a function key row. To be frank, neither of the two was completely new, as the function row is kind of reminiscent of the MacBook shenanigans of the last few years. Respectively, the touchpad is a refined version of what Lenovo tried to do with its Yoga 9i (14″). However, to have both of these things together is definitely new. Another thing new to us is the edge-to-edge lattice-less keyboard. It too requires some time of getting used to. And the short key travel is not your best friend, by any means. However, it is pretty okay for typing. With that said, we would prefer a ThinkPad keyboard 10 out of 10 times. We almost forgot to mention the fantastic battery life. Dell has truly tamed the Alder Lake family, as this laptop is capable of delivering more than 20 hours of Web browsing on a single battery charge. At the end of the day, the XPS 13 Plus 9320 is an expensive, yet innovative laptop, which will definitely turn heads.

Use the optimized performance preset, turn down the screen brightness, close unused apps and you can likely push the battery life to a better place. But I don't feel confident that I could pick up this laptop in the morning and work on it all day without charging. It helps that there's an express charging preset for powering up part of the battery quickly. The nearly 4K screen doesn't do the battery any favors, although the fact that it's an OLED panel should help. That's one reason I'm cautious about recommending 4K laptops -- higher-resolution screens are a battery killer. The XPS 13 Plus has a lot of innovative ideas -- some of which are important, while others seem like change for the sake of change. We may even disagree on which is which. If I were working on the next generation of this laptop, I'd keep the design updates but suggest sacrificing a little thickness for a bigger battery so this could be a more travel-ready companion.

Despite my reservations around some of Dell's design choices, the XPS 13 Plus still looks and feels like an upgrade from the standard XPS 13. The large borderless keyboard is a touch-typist's dream, and the Infinity Edge display still looks fantastic.

Not only is it a solid design with premium build quality and nice looks, it also has an easy keyboard to type on and an intuitive and yet invisible trackpad. On a first look, with the premium build, the updated hardware, thermal design, and battery, as well as the improved audio and the multitude of screen options, the 2022 XPS 13 Plus might have what it takes to continue the series’ winning spree over the years. However, Dell decided to experiment with this generation by opting for an atypical keyboard and clickpad design, which could end up being either a success and a unique selling point, or a potential deal-breaker for this XPS 13 generation. Furthermore, they also gimped the connectivity of this series, dumping the card reader and the audio jack, both decisions that affect the laptop’s overall ergonomics in a negative way. I look forward to spending more time with this laptop and gathering my thoughts for a proper review. In the meantime, I’m curious what you guys think about the hardware changes, the OLED screen option, the inputs, and the USB-C-only connectivity of this 2022 Dell XPS 13 Plus 9320 series.

The Dell XPS 13 Plus is great if you are looking for a compact and slim laptop. It has a striking design with a lightweight and compact form factor, which is particularly convenient if you travel a lot. The borderless trackpad and glowing touch panel give the laptop a futuristic look, meaning this is not something that you see often in laptops. However, the zero-lattice keyboard and the absence of a physical trackpad can be a drawback for users who are not well-versed in the functionalities of a keyboard or are proficient typists. The exorbitant price tag of Rs 1,84,000 may also be a concern for some buyers. The display is the standout feature of the laptop, with its 13.4-inch InfinityEdge display being a delight to look at. Overall, the Dell XPS 13 Plus is a good option for those who prioritize design and portability over practicality, of course, and are also ready to pay a hefty price.

I did not care much for that capacitive touch bar, for example, and I also wasn’t a fan of the so-so battery life and the minimal IO. We're getting in-depth on all these aspects in this review.

There's undoubtedly a lot to like about the XPS 13 Plus. It has the feel of a laptop that wants to be used, and that makes you want to use it even more. The screen and speakers are undoubted standouts compared to many other devices in the same class, and the performance is slick enough to satisfy all but the most demanding workloads. However, the hybrid-haptic keyboard idea feels like a mission in style over substance - it's impressive at doing what it does, but we're left questioning whether it's adding anything new to the party (fancy backlighting aside). If there was some tangible benefit to it beyond shaving perhaps a millimetre off the chassis, then we'd be more enthusiastic, but given that it takes a lot of getting used to and is prone to cutting out, it feels like a bit of a gimmick. On the other hand, let's not lose sight of the fact that this is a lovely machine, with a lot to recommend it. If you can stand the steep learning curve of the haptic surfaces, or are willing to be mildly put out until there's a firmware fix, you could do a lot worse than the XPS 13 Plus. It's definitely a machine to consider - but if you're thinking of buying it for its major differences, it might be worth holding off - bleeding edge isn't always the solution.
