The makers of the Fairphone can certainly claim to make the most sustainable smartphone currently available. While some devices will not even let you swap out the battery anymore the Fairphone comes with various modules in order to reduce waste. Let's find out how the concept evolved with this latest iteration, the Fairphone 3, in our review.

The Fairphone 3 is not the most impressive smartphone when it comes to specs or looks, but it certainly walks the walk when it comes to delivering one of the most responsible, ethical, and sustainable devices available today. If you are someone who really cares about the environment, fair trade, and labor practices, and you want to be on the leading edge of a social and business movement, then you'll truly appreciate this phone. If you're just looking for an affordable or mid-range Android phone, then you'll probably be disappointed.

This is an unusual phone, it does not have the latest and fastest processor, nor does it have the largest screen in the thinnest body, it is sold at a premium price but unlike the competition you can get into it and it even comes with a screwdriver so instead of the standard 12-18 months life this is marketed for a five year cycle of use.

The Fairphone 3 is a phone that should be analysed from a different point of view. We cannot compare its specs, power or design with other smartphones that are cheaper and more powerful, because they do not promise the same commitment to our society as the Fairphone does. However, if you are conscious of the environment and social issues, the Fairphone 3 is the phone you are looking for. The company offers the certainty of knowing that you have a device in your hands that has been manufactured in a fair and sustainable way. To summarise: you will not get a premium smartphone with the best specs, but you will have a very capable, decent device made by a company that has not dirtied your hands when manufacturing it.

Fairphone deserves a lot of plaudits for what it's trying to do in the areas of sustainability, eco-friendliness, repairability, and protections for workers along the supply chain, and the Fairphone 3 has enough going for it to make it a viable option for your next smartphone.

The Fairphone 3 is designed to factor in the human and environmental costs of smartphone manufacturing and disposal. As with other phones with relatively low-cost components, of course, it does not have a camera module that any serious photographer or videographer would choose for its image quality. Nevertheless, the reality is that while it is not great for shooting video, the Fairphone can produce largely usable moving and still images under many common shooting conditions; and with the exception of underexposure, what flaws and faults there are simply aren’t noticeable on a small display. Near-chronic underexposure is a problem, though, as is its near-omnipresent pink cast.

For Android fans, the Fairphone 3 is nothing like the shiny new device we usually see. It’s about a completely open and fixable modular phone, it’s about freedom to repair your own product, actual spare parts, and fair, ethically-sourced components. The specs are good enough, but definitely not great. Is it a bargain? No. Think of it this way: Have you been to shops where they sell goods made locally and decided you should support people, not big business? Maybe you have, even if you only bought soap. It’s the same concept.

If you are someone who wants a more ethical and sustainable alternative to a budget £200 device, then the Fairphone 3 Plus delivers. It’ll serve your needs in the same way as a budget smartphone will in 2020 but at a price premium that reflects its ethically sourced materials and repairability. But don’t expect this to compete with other similarly priced phones. Fairphone has different priorities, and in order to buy one of its phones, you need to share them.

The Fairphone 3 Plus, like the Fairphones before it, stands out as the number one ethical, eco-friendly smartphone choice. That approach is either going to compel you to buy it, or make you look elsewhere for better options in terms of performance and camera quality.

Like many other phones, it’s possible to overlook the flaws on the Fairphone 3+, and if you have a big interest in its modularity and the sustainable approach, it can still be worth the price tag. The flaws don’t make it unusable or an outright bad phone, but you really have to be all-in on the company’s philosophy to justify what you have to pay. If that’s the case for you, you can buy the Fairphone 3+ from Fairphone’s website, or opt for last year’s Fairphone 3 if you don’t need the upgraded cameras.

We go hands-on with the Fairphone 3+, a mid-range phone with a focus on sustainability and fair production. It has a Snapdragon 632, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, and a 3,040mAh battery. The back has a single 48MP camera, and the front has a 16MP selfie camera. It costs €469.

I'm used to seeing the latest feature-packed smartphone phones with their fancy industrial design, or models that accentuate one specific feature, or try to deliver a great price/performance ratio, or have some other aspect to shout about. The Fairphone 3+ isn't designed to keep up with the pack, and to compare it to other handsets in terms of 'bang for buck' rather misses the point.

Should you buy the Fairphone 3+? Well if you’re reading this article you must be interested and with good reason. The phone delivers a smartphone experience and it does so without any glaring omissions that would make you feel like you’ve compromised greatly. You get all of this while knowing you’ve helped the world through buying a more environmentally friendly phone that features a modular design, allowing for upgrades to keep your phone feeling fresh, saving you from spending more money on a new phone and saving the world from more technological waste. So in summary we applaud Fairphone for it’s stance here and for making a truly usable smartphone that delivers on the brand’s and their customer’s morality. It won’t be everyone which is a shame, but for those looking to make a difference, there’s no better time to adopt.

Fairphone has its sight set a lot higher, aiming at goals like fair compensation for workers in China, fair-trade gold, fair cobalt and conflict-free tin and tungsten. Recycling and sustainability. Above all else, Fairphone's key immediate ambition is to convince as many users as possible to keep their devices for as long as five to seven years at a time, reducing its carbon footprint by as much as 28 to 42%. Regardless of whether those are its own products, specifically crafted to aid the process or any other piece of tech, headed to an inevitable landfill. If you share the same goals and believe in them deeply enough, the Fairphones look like a great means to an end.
