Reviews for the Fairphone 4
Fairphone 3,其厚厚的显示屏边缘,看起来相当过时。现在是时候推出新版本了。Fairphone 4提供了更现代的设计和5G手机,但它是否还能像以前那样容易维修和可持续发展?

The Fairphone 4 doesn't boast the best specs or a unique design. But it does offer a few meaningful things you just can't get from any other phone maker.

The Fairphone 4 is the best Fairphone yet by miles and a very solid smartphone in general. If the company can keep spare parts in stock and stays true to its five year software promise, it will be hands down the most ethical and sustainable phone you can buy now and for the next few years. It’s the best way to own a decent new smartphone while supporting an ethical supply chain, though you could also promote sustainable smartphone use by buying a second hand device from another manufacturer. But if Fairphone’s mission appeals to you, and you don’t mind using a phone with mid-range specs and hardware for the next few years, I don’t hesitate in recommending it.

From a purely technical perspective, there isn’t too much that’s impressive about the Fairphone 4. Most smartphone selling points can be found implemented better on rival devices and the phone’s mid-range price doesn’t reflect the performance of its hardware. However, if modularity, repairability, and eco-friendliness are at the top of your purchasing requirements, you’ll find nothing better. Essentially, the Fairphone 4 is the phone to get if neither you nor your business really cares about getting the absolute best performance-per-pound. It’s the best eco-friendly device on the market and if your organisation is pursuing green initiatives, there’s no better device to represent your company’s values. What’s more, the modest price coupled with Fairphone’s five-year warranty makes it an attractive investment regardless of its perceived technical shortcomings. It’s a device for businesses that’s both as friendly to the environment as it is to your PR strategy.

Fairphone 4 is based on a sound and sympathetic idea: to avoid obsolescence while ensuring that nothing goes to waste as electronic waste. The idea that users can replace defective parts themselves also appeals to my hobbyist heart. Unfortunately, you cannot replace the processor yourself with a faster version. Even today it is relatively slow. And I dare not think how technologically obsolete it will be in 2027. That makes the longevity of the device rather hypothetical. The Fairphone 4 is priced in the premium segment. But that’s not where it belongs. Incorporating recycling into the process is costly and when factory workers have to earn a living wage, it will inevitably affect the selling price. But as it stands, conscience is the sole argument for buying the Fairphone 4.

The Fairphone 4, like previous models in this eco-conscious line, is modular, and set up so that users can easily replace the battery and some other parts themselves. Parts and raw materials are as much as possible sourced responsibly, according to the company. Running on Android 11, the device is powered with the mid-range Snapdragon 750G chipset and is 5G ready. On the audio front, the device has two speakers, one top center and one bottom right. Among its peers in this price range (about 650 euros), its global score was among the lowest, notching a 53, which matches the score of the Vivo X51 5G. In playback, the Fairphone 4 is functional. Balance is good, and voices are in general intelligible. But the timbre is very midrange focused — low end is desperately absent and high end isn’t great either — and at maximum volume artifacts become glaring. As a recording device, the Fairphone 4 is functional with some flaws in most use cases. But the device’s memo app was deeply flawed across use cases and attributes, bringing down the overall score. In some cases, the recordings were simply unintelligible.

The Fairphone is a nice phone and a change from the norm in all the good ways — as well as a few of the not-so-good ways. I am sure the company wants to sell enough products to stay in business, but I can't help but feel like profit isn't the company's end game as much as shaking up the industry is. It's also a nice upgrade from the Fairphone 3, bringing meaningful features like water resistance and a better chip for better performance. To me, the good outweighs the bad, and I would recommend that anyone in the market for a new phone in Europe at least give it a second look. The Fairphone 4 doesn't boast the best specs or a unique design. But it does offer a few meaningful things you just can't get from any other phone maker.

The Fairphone 4 shows a few frame drops at 30 fps and when playing FHD 60 fps videos, but no frame drops are visible when playing video games. The device does not manage motion blur well, and sometimes the device pauses before resuming video playback after moving in the timeline. The Fairphone 4 is quite accurate when zooming in the gallery app, but the device lacks smoothness regardless of the use case.

The Fairphone 4 is a significant step forward for the company, and it is its first that I can recommend unequivocally for those who care deeply about a repairable, fair, and long-lasting phone. While there are some issues like the camera, the display, and the vibration motor, none of these are real deal breakers. I’m just so glad that Fairphone has finally chosen a processor that won’t be hopelessly underpowered over the next few years. However, I still stand by my conviction that iPhones are a close second. iPhones have historically been among the longest updated devices, with more than five years of software support being the norm. Apple also has a huge network of repair shops, both first-party and third-party, should something go wrong. Sure, fixing the iPhones is more cumbersome and will cost you more, and Apple doesn’t care as much about the fairness of its supply chain, but if the Fairphone isn’t available in your region or you want faster software updates, they’re the way to go.

The main feature that Fairphone 4 offers users would be 5G connectivity. The company has made a lot of changes compared to last year’s Fairphone 3 Plus smartphone. Furthermore, the protection features are also exceptional, and there are a number of smartphones in the same price range that do not offer these features unless you are purchasing a shielded phone like Ulefone. The camera is good enough to satisfy your needs, while the battery life is a little outdated. Now, let’s talk about the alternative options you can choose in the same price range. If you are looking for a full-throttle gaming phone at the same price, the Asus ROG 5 would be a great alternative option. Instead, if you prefer versatile features, of course, you won’t regret buying the Samsung Galaxy S21, as this device offers robust features at the same price tag.

If you’re looking for the most eco-friendly phone of 2021, the Fairphone 4 is far and away the best option for you - it’s the newest smartphone from Fairphone, a company that specializes in tech made from eco-friendly material sourced in sustainable ways and built in factories that treat employees well. We normally see one new Fairphone device a year, and the Fairphone 4 is 2021’s entry, but it’s the first ‘new’ device from the company since the Fairphone 3 in 2019. We say that because 2020’s Fairphone 3 Plus was actually just an upgraded version of the 3 - and we don’t say that flippantly, as you could literally replace the parts in your 3 to turn it into a 3 Plus. Fairphones are modular, which means you can easily remove and replace the components yourself if one gets damaged or you want an upgrade. This is great for the user, as it means you don’t have to pay someone to repair your device, and it stops you needing to replace your smartphone if one small part plays up. The modular nature of the phones is just one of many ways in which they’re eco-friendly.

The Fairphone 4 5G is a perfectly serviceable mid-range smartphone, albeit one that can't compete with the rest of the market in terms of specs for the price. But that's not the game this phone is playing: Fairphone gives ethical consumers somewhere to go, and that has to be a good thing.

The Fairphone 4 removes some, but not all of the compromises previous models have made for two big upsides: being as ethical and easily repairable as possible. It is chunky but with a more modern, distinctive design. It has a decent screen and 5G, but the camera isn’t great. Battery life is good but the processor isn’t particularly fast – fine for now but likely slow in five years. A five-year warranty and a pledge of six years of software support is far longer than any other Android manufacturer. And there’s nothing else on the market that is designed to be taken apart and repaired at home with just a standard screwdriver. There’s no headphone socket though, and wifi and mobile performance was a little weak. As with previous models, the Fairphone 4 best competes with the likes of the £300 OnePlus Nord CE, meaning you are paying about a £200 premium for ethical construction and vastly longer support. Overall it is a great device for people who want to support the company’s movement and are prepared to pay over the odds to do so.

If you’re spending money on a Fairphone 4, your money isn’t being spent on performance. It’s being spent on that five-year warranty, the promise of years of software support, and the security of knowing that, when 2026 rolls around, you’ll still be able to buy a new battery and pop it into the back of the phone without having to learn what a pentalobe screw is. And, of course, you’re paying to ensure that all these parts have been made from as responsibly sourced materials as possible in the first place. Whether it’s Fairtrade or organic food or sustainably produced clothing, there’s the expectation that you’ll have to pay a price premium for ethically-produced goods, and that’s exactly the case with the Fairphone 4.

Fairphone, the Dutch social enterprise, has just announced the launch of its latest device. This is the Fairphone 4 5G which comes with the claim of being more sustainable, repairable and a socially responsible device. Featuring a five-year warranty to encourage users to retain their handset for even longer, the Fairphone 4 5G has been constructed using lessons learned from previous phones including a modular approach with eight spare parts, being available in Fairphone's workshops and worldwide distribution, for easy repair.
