84.6% Google Pixel 5 smartphone review: Powerful mid-range with Android 11 | Notebookcheck
The Pixel 5 is the new smartphone flagship from Google, and it turned out extremely compact at 6 inches. In addition, the Android 11 phone is not equipped with a high-end SoC but only with a mid-range processor. However, as our test shows, things work out well in the end.

Google Pixel 5 one year later: Is it still worth buying?
Source: Android Authority English EN→zh-CN
Google no longer sells the Pixel 5 on its storefront and appears to be phasing out the handset in favor of its newer Pixel 5a 5G. The Pixel 5a offers very similar specifications and comes in at a more affordable $449, at least in the US and Japan — other regions are left with the lower-end Pixel 4a. It’s a good job, too, because, at $699, the Pixel 5 would be impossible to recommend instead of the company’s new Pixel 6, which retails for a very reasonable $599. While the Pixel 5 is still a perfectly serviceable handset twelve months later, Google has managed to pack way more into its newer Pixel 6 while also knocking $100 off the price tag. With an all-new design, faster charging, a custom flagship-tier Google Tensor processor, a more modern camera package, and a slightly longer update pledge, Google has really stepped up its game with the Pixel 6 series. You can still find the Pixel 5 renewed or “as-new,” but it’s hard to recommend it at anything over $500. Given the lower-cost entry point and superior future-proofing of the Pixel 6, you’re better off spending your money on Google’s latest smartphone.

The Google Pixel 5 loses some of the more advanced features of its predecessor in order to keep the cost down, and the result is a streamlined phone with great camera software and a clean Android interface. But without some of those premium perks, like a telephoto lens, that appear in other handsets at the same price tier, the Pixel 5 struggles to distinguish itself from the competition. It's a good handset at a consumer-pleasing price – but that's true of other 2020 phones, too.

After the Pixel 6 arrives, the Pixel 5 may no longer be the best Pixel ever. But it is still a really solid little phone. It fixes a number of the issues raised in the flawed-but-ambitious Pixel 4 line while introducing genuinely new, useful camera features, though many of them quickly trickled down to older Pixels. It may have minor downgrades over the Pixel 4, especially in the processing speed and biometrics department, but the battery improvements alone make up for it. If you're in the market to upgrade your phone this year and don't want to get into the stinging nettles of $1000+ smartphones, you could do a lot worse than the Pixel 5. But it's no longer a clear winner in any category — not for price, not for software, not for performance, and not even for cameras. Instead, it rests near the top of all of them, amalgamating into an experience that I prefer over basically every other Android phone.

However a phone isn’t merely a fashion piece or a camera. And speaking of the Pixel 5’s wonderful camera, you can get it in the $499 Pixel 4a 5G — hell, you can get it in the $349 Pixel 4a. Since the Pixel 4a 5G offers the same dual camera array as the Pixel 5, the same processor and the same 5G connectivity but for $200 less, it's hard to recommend the Pixel 5 over Google's less expensive phone if you're looking for a 5G device. Those who love Pixel phones do so because of the software, and Google has done well to make that software accessible in much cheaper phones. Unfortunately for Google, that very ambition has almost neutralized any reason one might want to purchase a Pixel 5.

Although Google engineers have done a terrific job optimizing the software and default settings, the Pixel 5’s battery performance was lagging behind its less-expensive competitors — and particularly so when on the go. Its biggest weakness, however, is in charging, with an 18W charger that was not efficient. Nevertheless, the smartphone itself proved to be very efficient in most of our protocol’s use case tests.

Google's Pixel 5 is a new kind of flagship that puts software and imaging first. That's not to say the rest of the hardware experience is an afterthought—and with wireless charging and an IP68 rating, we think it's worth the additional $100–200 over the Pixel 4a 5G. Compared with the Galaxy S20 FE 45G, however, the choice isn't as clear. The Pixel offers a superior software experience and better low-light imaging, but the Galaxy has a higher refresh rate and a much more powerful processor. It's a close call, and while the Galaxy gets our nod as Editors' Choice, the Pixel 5 is a fine alternative, as well as the type of flagship phone we hope to see more of in the future.

The Google Pixel 5 was released last October as the follow-up to the Pixel 4. Rather than offering an XL version as Google had done with previous Pixel flagship models, the Pixel 5 was more of a “take it or leave it” proposition. In the end, I still feel like Google’s release schedule is handicapping the company’s product lines. If the Pixel 5 had been released in early 2020, I think it would have had an easier time to rationalise itself. Being released in November, the phone really only had a couple of months opportunity to position itself in the market before getting crushed by the new spring generation refreshes – if one could argue that it had a competitive positioning at all at release.

83% Pixel 5 review: Google's newest phone hasn't pulled ahead of its rivals
Source: CNet English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
From what I've seen so far, the Pixel phones are able to go without charging for more than 24 hours with mild usage. I remember last year with the Pixel 4, that phone's battery noticeably drained pretty quickly through the day and fortunately I'm not seeing the same thing here. Battery tests on the Pixel 5 for continuous video playback on Airplane mode clocked an average of 21 hours, 43 minutes. This is an excellent time, especially when considering that the Pixel 4 averaged half that time at 10 hours. But we're going to conduct streaming tests on the Pixel 5, so check back for an update. Lastly, Google is introducing a new mode called Extreme Battery Saver. It's an option on top of the regular battery saver mode and it severely limits app usage to extend battery life.

Google Pixel 5 Audio review: Focused on the basics
Source: DxOMark English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
The Google Pixel 5 turned in a solid performance overall, with no huge flaws and mostly above-average marks across all attributes. In comparing it with the Google Pixel 4, it lost a little bit of ground in terms of playback but picked up ground as a fairly agile recording device. In terms of playback, it delivered decent high-end extension in timbre, and good intelligibility of dynamic content, even at minimum volume, and our engineers noted few artifacts. But the tonal balance was off because of a too-prominent upper midrange and a lack of low-end extensions. The inconsistent midrange impaired localizability and distance in the spatial attribute.

This is the Pixel 5, what Google calls the Ultimate 5G Google Phone, and what I'm gonna call proof to the theory I had earlier this year. The Google Pixel 5 solves my two biggest complaints about the Pixel 4, which to be fair, weren't complaints last year. One is that there's a fingerprint sensor; as I said earlier, any company that made a phone without a fingerprint sensor in 2020 would have to be completely tone-deaf. The Pixel 5 is much more like a no nonsense tool to me than other phones. Everything else that is encased in glass comes off more like a fashion accessory or an extra item in your life you need to take special care of. With Google’s new phone, I feel more and more each day as if it’s just there to help me stay connected, get some things done, and then go away. It’s not special, it’s not even trying to be. And because of that, I can actually appreciate its simplicity. While I wanted Google to go weird, they didn’t. They went basic almost to the extreme, which I guess is in a way weird, compared to industry trends.

Instead, it’s a Google Pixel that comes with just enough compromises to make it a solid option for the “average” buyer. In the US, it does feel a tad overpriced but still, is an overall solid device that manages to fix some previous Pixel-specific gripes. In Europe, with incentives and gifts, it’s almost a steal — and on top of that, a solid smartphone to boot. If you’re a hardcore Pixel fan — especially Pixel 4 XL owners — we’d have to say that this might be the first outright skippable flagship Google phone for some time.

Google's jumping on the 5G train with the $499 Pixel 4A 5G (£499, AU$799) and $699 Pixel 5 (£599 and AU$999). The phones run the latest Android 11 OS, have a second ultra-wide camera and bigger batteries than any previous Pixel phone. But as the marquee device, the Pixel 5 is equipped with a few more features.

Google Pixel 5 Review: Refined And Feature-Rich With Caveats
Source: Hot Hardware English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
What’s more vexing is that Google decided against offering a Pixel 5 XL this year, leaving many potential customers in a difficult position. Do you buy the Pixel 4a 5G for the larger display, but give up 2GB RAM, the 90Hz refresh rate, wireless charging, and water resistance? Or do you spend more on the Pixel 5 and live with a smaller phone? For $600, we’d pick the Pixel 5 for sure, because its additional features and benefits easily justify the somewhat higher price. However, as it stands, we’d probably choose the Pixel 4a 5G and save a few bucks if we were coming from a larger, previous-gen Pixel XL-sized device.

It seems like just yesterday that Google released the Pixel 4a, and it kind of was, such is the time warp of 2020. This year Google had their Made By Google event at around the same time of the year as usual, once again announcing two new phones to the market. This year though there is no ultra-premium, or even premium, flagship.

At four years old, Google’s Pixel smartphone family has been around long enough that even non-geeks probably know the basics: the Pixel is made by Google; it’s got a world-class camera; and physically speaking, the phone’s color is usually the most interesting thing about it.

Google has arguably been the Pixel’s worst enemy, with previous generations of phone demonstrating that its ambitions can easily end up outstripping its ability to fully deliver on them. The Pixel 5 works, in contrast, because Google showed some degree of restraint. By avoiding clever – but undercapitalized – gadgetry like Soli, Google manages to side-step the flaws that proved so frustrating with last year’s flagship.

Google's 2020 flagship is something of an oddball. Sure, it's a very competent phone with the power, camera, performance and build quality. But there are downsides - such as the poor ear speaker, and the larger and cheaper Pixel 4a 5G being much the same - that detract from the overall package.

Of course, the Pixel’s star quality has always been in its camera. And yes, photos taken with the Pixel 5 are great. Google Pixel 5

Google's Pixel 5 is a new kind of flagship that puts software and imaging first. That's not to say the rest of the hardware experience is an afterthought—and with wireless charging and an IP68 rating, we think it's worth the additional $100 to $200 over the Pixel 4a 5G. Compared with the Galaxy S20 FE 45G, however, it isn't as clear.

Google’s Pixel 5 is an interesting device. In many ways, it embodies the ideals cultivated by the Pixel series over the past few years, focusing on the slick software and great camera that made past Google phones dynamic and inviting. But equipped with a midrange processor and a somewhat stagnant feature set, one starts to question whether it deserves the flagship moniker it bears.

The Pixel 5 has a 6-inch OLED screen, rounded on the corners and interrupted only by a (somewhat large) hole punch for the selfie camera. There’s no XL version with a bigger screen, which might annoy some (and the Pixel 4A 5G isn’t so much bigger that it makes for a viable big-screen alternative). I personally love the size, but then I have always been a fan of something just slightly smaller than the Max / XL / Plus phones.

With the Pixel 5, Google is aiming for a more sensible pricing strategy, and for that we commend it - but it does raise the question of whether this phone has much to recommend it over Google’s other midrange device, the Pixel 4a. The 4a, after all, is just over £200 cheaper than this handset, and although at £416 the 4a 5G is much less of a bargain, the original is still a compelling proposition.

Google Pixel 5 review: An off year for Pixel fans

It used to be that, if you bought a Google Pixel, you were getting a powerful smartphone with some of the cleanest, most clever software around. Then, last year, things started to change: Google started offering lower-cost smartphones that, while maybe not as technically impressive, retained that focus on excellent software and intelligent features. That embrace of the mid-range has culminated in Google’s 2020 smartphone lineup. There’s the cheap and cheerful Pixel 4a, the slightly slicker Pixel 4a 5G, and now the Pixel 5 — a device that seems more like a lateral move from the 4a than a significant upgrade.

Lisa Gade reviews the Pixel 5, Google’s higher end Android phone for late 2020. The 6” Pixel has a FHD+ OLED 90Hz display, an aluminum back with a somewhat grippy textured coating and it runs Android 11 on the Snapdragon 765G with 5G. The $699 smartphone has 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, is IPX8 water resistant, supports wireless charging and has stereo speakers. As ever, cameras are a focus, and the Pixel 5 has a main 12MP camera and a 16MP ultrawide camera. Battery capacity is significantly improved from the Pixel 4.

The Pixel 5 is small and perfectly formed and it’s a super smartphone for the new 5G decade. It’s about all your data – and most of the world’s data, delivered at possibly brain-numbing speeds – in the palm of your hand. And without wishing to tempt fate, the tough textured metal frame should endure most of what you encounter day to day without needing a protective or grippy case, making this potentially the slimmest and lightest smartphone of the year.

Google Pixel 5 unboxing and hands-on: The premium Pixel for 2020
Source: Android Authority English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
At $699, the Google Pixel 5 is one of the most affordable flagships Google has released since the Pixel series was born. That being said, $699 is still a lot of cash, and there are plenty of people who were disappointed that Google didn’t use the flagship Snapdragon 865 processor from Qualcomm. Personally, I think the 765G was a great choice since it will offer enough performance for most people at a more affordable price than last year. But I think $649 would have been a better price, especially since the Pixel 4a 5G is $150 more expensive than the Pixel 4a. In this house, we like consistency.

Google Pixel 5 camera preview
Source: DxOMark English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
Looking at the camera hardware alone, it’s fair to say the Pixel 5 offers decent specs, but the dual-camera setup and processor are not on the same level as current flagships from the competition. However, this is reflected in the phone’s price, which is a good deal lower than most 2020 flagships. It’s also worth mentioning that while camera hardware is important, software is a major contributor to image quality, too. And software is obviously where Google’s expertise is. With algorithms like HDR+ and Super Resolution, the company has been able to squeeze the most out of limited imaging hardware for years, so we’d expect the Pixel 5 to do the same and deliver very good overall image quality for its price segment.

The Google Pixel 5a delivers the same experience as the Pixel 5 or Pixel 4a 5G, but for only $449. It’s also got the biggest battery ever in a Pixel — at least until the Pixel 6 Pro came along — and it’s the first A-series Pixel to sport water resistance. The phone’s big OLED display, two rear cameras, and decent amount of power are great for the price.

90% Google Pixel 5a review: Still great, but it's not the Pixel 6
Source: Android Authority English EN→zh-CN
Google has subtly proved a point over the last few years: it is very good at making basic smartphones that work well. The Google Pixel 5a is no exception, and it’s made even better thanks to the IP67 rating and gigantic battery. No, it’s not the most exciting phone you can find, but it works, and that’s exactly what it’s supposed to do. I, and many others, would have loved to see a more powerful processor and a 90Hz display on this year’s model, but that likely would’ve bumped the price up to $500 or so — then we’d be having a different conversation. And let’s be honest, asking Google to add notable camera hardware improvements to a mid-range phone is pretty much out of the question. While the phone is all-around good, it’s that $449 price tag that really makes the Pixel 5a stand out. I’ve enjoyed using it, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a sub-$1,000 phone that “just works.” At this point, Google has this down to a science. There’s just one problem: the Pixel 6 is just $150 more expensive, and for that you get a whole lot more for not a lot of extra cash.

I'm not crestfallen that Google stuck with a mediocre 60Hz display, either, but it is a bit behind the competition — even OnePlus is managing high refresh rates in cheaper devices. If Google had given this a 90+ Hz display, I'd probably be calling this the Pixel 5 XL, regardless of the name Google chose. As it stands, I think it's a label you could use anyway, although the comparison besmirches the 5a. It's a better phone at a better price. Ultimately, that's what I think this all comes down to: the $450 price tag. Sure, outside the US and Japan, you can buy a phone with much better hardware for that much money — and you can bet that our comment section below is already loaded with folks screaming about random Xiaomi or Realme phones that you can't get here. But right now, in the US, the Pixel 5a is a very attractive option. Last year's 4a 5G was already tough to beat and my favorite phone of 2020.

If you love the simplicity of stock Android and don’t want to overspend on a phone, then it’s hard to look past the Pixel 5a, in much the same way as the iPhone SE. Here, for $399, you’re getting 3 years of guaranteed Android updates, meaning you’re sorted for at least Android 13 and Android 14. And there’s an Android 12 update waiting for you right out of the box. Plus you’ll get those updates very shortly after release. The cameras also overachieve the moderate specs, thanks to Google’s advances in machine learning and computational photography (housing all those Google Photos libraries has paid off). However, the Pixel 6 just took the biggest leap forward in the history of the range in terms of design, processing, display, and cameras. The 5a feels a lot less attractive than it just a couple of months ago. The Pixel 5a feels like the Google phone of the past, which makes the purchase less exciting and harder to recommend. If you’re hard capped at $400 for a phone, you’ll find none better. If you can spring the extra couple of hundred dollars, you’re unlikely to regret it.

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro introduce more significant changes to Google's phone lineup, but the Pixel 5a is worth strong consideration if you want the Google software and camera experience for a lower price. Despite $449 being a $100 hike from last year’s phone, the Pixel 5a delivers almost everything that the $699 Pixel 5 managed, minus the 90Hz display, for $250 less. The Pixel 5a’s claim to fame comes down to its cameras, and boy do they deliver. This phone runs laps around anything at this price, even the iPhone SE. Apple’s budget iPhone isn’t a bad camera phone by any means, but the 5a is just better all around. This should come as no surprise to anyone who knows that Pixels regularly feature in our picks for the best camera phones. Despite the battery life not knocking my socks off, I really like the Pixel 5a. It does everything the Pixel 4a 5G did well for $50 less, and that’s impressive. While people in other countries will feel left out that the Pixel 5a only ships in the U.S. and Japan, you should absolutely consider this phone if you want a top budget handset.

89% Google Pixel 5a Review: Boring looks hide an outstanding budget phone
Source: Phone Arena English EN→zh-CN
The Pixel 5a might not look exciting on the outside and this combined with what looks like Google trying to hide this phone from the world, it can almost fly under the radar. But it shouldn't be this way: this phone excels in the fundamentals in an outstanding way. It is built like a tank with a metal body, a rarity these days, it features a massive battery and we can call this a 2-day phone, another achievement that most others cannot match, and topping it all is an excellent camera system that performs during the day and shines above rivals at night. Sure, the lack of a fast refresh rate is a bit of a disappointment and Google using the same chip instead of a slightly faster one is lamentable, but even with those compromises the Pixel 5a is definitely in the race for one of the best budget phones around.

When my only real complaint about a phone is that it's not launching in enough countries, it's safe to say it's definitely a phone I recommend buying, If you've been hanging onto an aging Pixel 3a (XL), or even if you're on a Pixel 2/3 and know the Pixel 6 is going to be too expensive for you to stomach, the Google Pixel 5a gives you the best of both worlds: you'll get all the new Android and Pixel features for the next three years (or more), and you won't break the bank doing it. Between a battery that you'll be able to charge less, consistent performance, a bright, easy-to-read screen, and that sweet, sweet Pixel software, the Google Pixel 5a is shaping up to be the best cheap Android phone of 2021 and probably one of the best Android phones of 2021 period. It may not be pretty, but that's what cases are for — and Google brought some beauties this year.

Google Pixel 5a :The LAST Stop to the Pixel 6!
Source: Pocketnow English
We're on the cusp of a dramatic shift in the Pixel smartphones -- the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro are going to bring a new design and plenty of new hardware to meet the great software we've enjoyed from Google for years now. However, the Pixel 5a serves as our last stop toward the new flagships, and JV thinks that it serves as a great snapshot of what marks the essentials in a smartphone. Let's talk through the Pixel 5a just days before the Pixel 6 arrives!

Source: Android Police English EN→zh-CN
The Pixel 5a is a great phone, but it's also a shift in Google's smartphone strategy that makes comparison across generations a little awkward. As much as we loved the absolute crap out of last year's Pixel 4a, between the Pixel 6 leaks and the Pixel 5a's much larger footprint, Google is seemingly done with smaller phones. In my mind, that means the Pixel 5a is more of a successor to the Pixel 4a 5G than the Pixel 4a, and it does a great job at replacing it — great, but not fantastic.

90% Google Pixel 5a Review: The Best 5G Android Phone You Can Buy for Less Than $500, but There Are Some Caveats
Source: Gear Diary English EN→zh-CN
While the highly anticipated Google Pixel 6 flagship series will be available in just another month or so, it will most assuredly be much more expensive. With that in mind, the Pixel 5a is an excellent choice if you are looking for an affordable, updated Pixel device, so long as you live in the US or Japan; those are the only two countries where it is available. Should you get a Google Pixel 5a? That depends. If you already have the Pixel 5, it would be silly to get the Pixel 5a unless you have the same complaints regarding the Pixel 5 that I did. If you have a Pixel 4 series (or an older model) and want to get an updated Pixel experience but don’t think you can stomach the premium price of the Pixel 6, then yes. In that case, you absolutely should upgrade — especially if you had one of the 64GB models or your model doesn’t have an IPXX rating.

Google Pixel 5A Review in India: Best Budget Photography King
Source: Cashify English EN→zh-CN
The Pixel 5A is worth strong consideration if you are looking for Google's software and an excellent camera experience in a budget price range. Despite the $449 (Rs. 33,300), the Pixel 5 delivers almost everything that the Pixel 5 manages to offer. Google claims that their budget smartphones have the best cameras and take to deliver on their promise and we found that true in our experience. The Apple's budget iPhone SE isn't that bad in terms of camera performance, but the 5A is just better all around. I will not be surprised as everyone knows that Pixel smartphones are regularly featured having the best smartphone cameras on the planet. It does everything that the Pixel 4A 5G did well, and that is very impressive. While you might be excited about buying the device, sadly, it is only available in the US and Japan; you can't get the smartphone if you live in India as of now. But the device is expected to be launched in India very soon. Stay tuned for that.

The Pixel 5a is an interesting price point of $449 in the US. While It's a shame the phone isn't available outside of the US and Japan, it doesn't make sense for Google to launch the Pixel 5a outside of these markets since the competition and alternative devices are not as threatening as they are in other markets like the EU and India. Google's Pixel 5a 5G has imposter syndrome out of the box: Google doesn't believe that it's worthy enough to compete in markets outside of the US and Japan. The Pixel 5a 5G is a great phone with excellent battery life, a great camera, snappy software, and a bright display. However, this year's "a" Series device is catching up to support 5G and was obviously not meant to be competitive enough in markets like EU, South America, China, and India.

Google Pixel 5a Review, Pros and Cons
Source: OI Spice Tech News English EN→zh-CN
Based only on the hardware of the Google Pixel 5a smartphone, it wouldn’t be good to buy a smartphone at that price. Although the price is lower than the previous Pixel 5, it’s not worth your money with such a mid-range budget. You can certainly adopt the built-in features, including the brilliant Snapdragon chipset, a nice screen, but the camera and battery section won’t appeal to you at all. In fact, there’s a bigger battery pack than the previous model, so the smartphone can deliver more battery life but you will miss wireless and reverse charging. With limited specs, the Google Pixel 5a does not fit your choice at this high price range. So here are our recommendations. It would be better to go for the Xiaomi Poco X3 GT where you have more specs in a decent price range.

Google Pixel 5a Review (Part 4): Final thoughts
Source: XDA Developers English EN→zh-CN
There’s a lot that’s good here, as you’d expect. Google continues to deliver value in a way that few can compete with. It brings software features like Now Playing, dual exposure with the camera, and more to the mid-range price point. Of course, that existed with the Pixel 4a as well. It’s still missing wireless charging, which is a shame, but it’s made up for with a big battery. The biggest problem that I has was that the camera caused the device to overheat on numerous occasions. It’s been widely reported by now that the camera shuts down when recording 4K 60fps video, but there were times it would shut the flash off just when taking pictures. It was a real pain point. That’s just one thing to get hung up on. If you’re looking to spend under $500 on a phone, I’m not sure what else you’d be looking at, to be honest. It’s got a great OLED display, even if it’s not 90Hz, and it’s got a phenomenal camera that includes Night Sight, astrophotography, and more.

What happens if you cross the Google Pixel 5 with the Pixel 4a? You get the new Google Pixel 5a, a $449 Android phone with sub-6 5G, a 6.34” OLED display and the same excellent main and ultrawide rear cameras as the more expensive Pixel 5. The Pixel 5a has a high capacity 4586 mAh battery, a plastic-clad “Mostly Black” aluminum casing and is IP67 water and dust resistant. It’s sold unlocked for use on most carriers, has NFC, a fingerprint scanner and a 3.5mm headphone jack. And yes, an 18 watt fast charger is included in the box. As a Google branded phone, it will get OS and security updates for 3 years.

85% Google Pixel 5A review: Snappy performance, familiar design
Source: CNet English EN→zh-CN
Google's $449 Pixel 5A with 5G is the second major Pixel announcement this year, hot on the heels of the Pixel 6 teaser earlier this month. It features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor that powers a 6.34-inch OLED display. The phone also has IP67 water- and dust-resistance. So while Google's highest-end Pixel 6 and 6 Pro phones will include the new in-house Tensor chip, the 5A (as I'll call it from now on) will have more in common with last year's Pixel 4A 5G. For Pixel fans with deeper pockets, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro's chip and redesign could be exciting, but this Pixel likely will be shooting for a more budget-conscious crowd. For the value, it's hard to not like what Google has done with the Pixel 5A. The only real thing holding it back is Google's inability to commit to supporting upcoming 5G networks that are set to start coming online in a few months.

Pixel 5a: The $449 Way To Say "Hey Google"

It might not be the Google phone most of us are looking forward to in 2021, but the Pixel 5a wasn’t made to speed up your heart rate; it was made to slow down your burn rate. It’s cheaper, is what I’m saying – and while there's not much new here if you're already familiar with its predecessors the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5, getting this much camera capability for $449 is at least worth a hands-on video.

The Google Pixel 5a delivers the same experience as the Pixel 5 or Pixel 4a 5G, but for only $449. It’s also got the biggest battery ever in a Pixel, and it’s the first A-series Pixel to sport water resistance. The phone’s big OLED display, two rear cameras, and decent amount of power are great for the price.

Google Pixel 5a With 5G
Source: PC Mag English EN→zh-CN
The Google Pixel 5a with 5G is an incredible midrange offering, and well deserving of our Editors' Choice award. It has plenty of power, a crisp OLED display, excellent battery life, and some of the best cameras you'll find on any smartphone. At $449, it's a better value than the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G ($699.99), the previous mid-tier title holder. In fact, it’s hard to find much fault with the Pixel 5a at all. Sure, it may not have wireless charging or a display with a high refresh rate, but it performs like a champ and has the same durable build quality of the more expensive Google Pixel 5. And though Google only offers a sub-6GHz version of the Pixel 5a for now, it seems likely that a mmWave version for Verizon will be announced in the very near future. If you're looking for a 5G phone that delivers outstanding performance and features for the price, the Pixel 5a should be the top contender.

The Google Pixel 5a isn’t much different than its predecessor aside from a bigger battery and a rating for water and dust resistance, making it an underwhelming upgrade, but still a solid mid-range phone with fantastic cameras. Google has subtly proved a point over the last few years: it is very good at making basic smartphones that work well. The Google Pixel 5a is no exception, and it’s made even better thanks to the IP67 rating and gigantic battery. No, it’s not the most exciting phone you’ll see in 2021, but it works, and that’s exactly what it’s supposed to do. I’ve enjoyed using it, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a sub-$1,000 phone that “just works.”

Google Pixel 5a Review and Unboxing!

During the past 7 days, I spent a good amount of time with the Pixel 5a and came away feeling like this would be a solid choice for those with a sub-$500 limit on phone spending. The upgrades here (IP67, bigger display, and bigger battery) along with the $50 price drop from last year, create a package that runs well, lasts a long time, and can still take a good picture. There may not be anything incredibly exciting about the Pixel 5a, but I’m not sure there is supposed to be. Again, the Pixel 6 is coming and Google is expected to go big there.

90% Google Pixel 5A Review: The Best Phone Under $500
Source: Best Products English EN→zh-CN
I’d take the Pixel 5a with 5G over any smartphone that costs below $500 because the product ticks all the important boxes. It’s sleek, durable, fast, great at capturing photos and video, and capable of making it through a full day of use, all at an agreeable price. To top things off, the phone delivers a cutting Android user experience that’s second to none in its class. For $449, the Google Pixel 5a with 5G comes with 128 GB of non-expandable storage — enough for all but the most data-demanding consumers. For comparison, the iPhone 11 — Apple’s best alternative to the product — will cost you $649 with the same amount of storage and no 5G. I’d still pick the Pixel 5a with 5G for its superior camera and craftsmanship (the Galaxy is made from plastic), as well as the next-level Android experience it brings.

The biggest hurdle the Pixel 5a faces is availability. Previous Pixel phones gradually made their way into carrier stores, but you’ll only find this one in the Google Store online, or via Google Fi in the US. Unlocked, it’ll work on Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, USCC, Charger, C-Spire, Visible, and other US networks, but you won’t see it in their retail locations. In Japan, it’ll be offered at SoftBank, too. For all the fancy foldables and other experimentation at the flagship end of the market, the real progress in smartphones over the past few years has undoubtedly been in just how much you get for your money in more affordable devices. The Pixel 5 felt refreshingly attainable, but the Pixel 5a doubles-down on that. You really don’t have to spend four figures – or even close to that – for a great all-round experience, and that’s something worth celebrating.

Source: Hot Hardware English EN→zh-CN Archive.org version
It’s easy to be cynical and dismiss the Pixel 5a as just a minor update to the Pixel 4a 5G, but there really is more to the story. The Pixel 5a is a fantastic mid-range handset, especially for $449. While some things remain the same, like the Snapdragon 765G, RAM, storage, cameras, and design, others are significantly better. Who’s going to complain about a bigger battery or water resistance for $50 less? The larger (taller and narrower) screen and metal build are also nice bonuses. In all, we highly recommend the Pixel 5a -- it’s simply greater than the sum of its parts. And once you consider the price, it makes even more sense. You can pre-order the Pixel 5a today (Aug 17) or wait until Aug 26 to buy it for $449 (unlocked) from the Google Store and Google Fi ($15/month subscription) here in the US, and for ¥51,700 from the Google Store and Softbank in Japan.
