Reviews for the Google Pixelbook
The Chromebook poster child. The most expensive Chromebook available is unsurprisingly fast and very versatile. Just be prepared to bring all your USB Type-C adapters along for the trip.

Google truly outdid themselves with this device, and while I understand the reason they aren’t building Chromebooks any longer, it still makes me a bit sad about that whole situation when I use the Pixelbook. It’s just so good and so nice to use that I sometimes wonder what it would be like if we had 4 or 5 iterations of it by this point. I suppose we’ll never know, but it’s still fun to be able to pick up a device that started a movement and not just look at it, but actually use it. It’s a testament to how long-lasting and awesome Chromebooks are, and I’d bet in a few years as the Pixelbook turns 10, a similar test will be able to be run with similar results. It’s just that good.

So then, the Pixelbook is the best Chromebook ever. And, providing you’re OK with Chrome OS, there’s an awful lot to like. Aside from the fact it’s an expensive piece of tech, it’s unfortunate that the hardware features a low-power Intel processor.

The Pixelbook's aesthetics, performance and display are great for a Chromebook, but they also stack up well against Windows- and iOS-powered competitors. If not for its higher price and subpar battery life, the Pixelbook would be an easy recommendation.

Even then, before splashing out on a Pixelbook, just remember that there are alternatives. Check out Lenovo’s Yoga Book, for example. It might be smaller, but it comes in Windows and Android versions and costs half as much.

The Google Pixelbook deliver and brings you to Chromebook heaven. Even with the Core i5 edition, the Pixelbook delivers an exemplary, flawless web experience, with a user interface that can be smoother than more powerful PCs. If you like having more tabs open, I recommend the Core i7 version, which has 2X the memory and a slightly faster CPU.

My time with the Pixelbook was one of mixed results as I will go into more detail about. On the one hand, the £1200 price tag for the version I was loaned was too high. I would have been crazy to pick one over my cheaper, yet more expandable MacBook Pro that I have had for a few years now.

If you're in the market for a top-of-the-line Chromebook, you can't get much better than the Pixelbook. Between the long battery life and convertible design, it's an absolute pleasure to use. Plus, the powerful internals make it one of the fastest Chromebooks we've ever tested. While we love the full Android support and lightweight body, it's not without its flaws.

If you want a simple laptop mostly for browsing the internet and using some apps from time to time, this is a good option — albeit an expensive one. More demanding users will find this machine can get the job done, but computers with other operating systems at similar price points will get it done better and with less hassle.

Price aside, the Pixelbook represents the best Chromebook you can buy right now, a laptop that gives the Microsoft Surface and Apple MacBook lines some stiff competition. With its Android app support, the multiple modes of use, the optional stylus, the excellent design, and the top-level specs, it's very much the Chromebook to beat in 2018.

Still, the $999+ price tag is hard to get past, especially for a platform which continues to demand such compromises. What the Google Pixelbook does, however, is leave me actively wanting to be able to make the switch: the hardware, design, and performance are all so beguiling. It might not be the notebook for me today, but it means I’ll be watching Chrome OS even more closely to make that jump when the feature delta finally closes.

Truth be told, the Pixelbook probably has more power than most Chromebook users will ever need. It gets a high rating not because I think everyone should buy it. Frankly it’s unaffordable for most people, and hard for many to justify compared to a full-fledged Windows or Mac PC. Instead, the Pixelbook earns its rating because it succeeds in showing the best a Chromebook can be.

Chrome OS has matured to the point where it is a legitimate option for many consumers, and the Pixelbook represents the best hardware to run it on. Mediocre battery life is a disappointment, but the Pixelbook's hardware is otherwise as good as it gets. Unless you absolutely need a Mac or Windows PC, the Pixelbook is worth its high price.

As someone who used to primarily work from an iPad, about halfway through the Pixelbook review process, it occurred to me: The Pixelbook is more of a computer than the iPad Pro is. Yes, Apple has many more apps, and better quality apps at that, than Chrome OS right now.

Even if you are a Google devotee, it's worth considering alternatives, even those that aren't a single convertible device. You could get a very good clamshell Chromebook like the Acer Chromebook 14$297.41 at Amazon and an excellent Android tablet like the Huawei MediaPad M3$289.00 at Amazon. All your Android apps would run fine on the latter and you'd have a bigger screen for getting work done on the former. You'd save about $500 over the Pixelbook in the process. And we guarantee that the 0.7-pound MediaPad M3 will be more comfortable to hold for long periods while reading or gaming than the 2.4-pound Chromebook Pixel.

It's an amazing device and lives up to all the hype that has surrounded it since we first heard of it. And there are people who will buy it, but not because it's something anyone needs. If you've never used a Chromebook, you should be aware they have some limitations. While you will be able to access the full Google Play store on the Pixelbook (Snapchat is even making a desktop version of its app for the Chrome OS store), you won't be able to download any desktop software you might be accustomed to using. That's because Chromebooks are primarily meant to be used online. But because the operating system is constantly being updated, it's better protected from viruses than many PCs.

It also feels *far* less cumbersome than Microsoft's Surface Book -- an important comparison even if the Book's discrete graphics options can put it in a different weight class. Other touches, like a magnet that holds the Pixelbook in tablet mode, and the ability to charge it with either of its USB-C ports seem pretty convenient.

All of the Pixelbook’s internal components, including the processor, RAM and internal storage, are soldered to its motherboard, which is to say there’s no way to upgrade any of those after purchasing the device, which is something to keep in mind for consumers that are thinking about purchasing the Pixelbook.
