Affordability and style. No one will accuse HP’s latest Chromebook of neglecting its appearance; as far as plastic devices go, it’s an attractive contender. But at just $279, is it even possible to supply the parts necessary for adequate performance?

At its launch, the Chromebook 11 was already a bargain at £229; now you can easily find it for £190, making it irresistible. To be sure, there are compromises, notably on speed and longevity – we'd love to see a model with a Bay Trail or Haswell processor and a longer-lasting battery. But even as it stands, the HP Chromebook 11's display, keyboard, trackpad and comfortable, lightweight design make it a joy to use. Whether you share it with the family or use it in your business, this is a brilliant Chromebook at an almost unbelievable price.

For the asking price of $399 (and even with a lower street price of $349), the HP Chromebook 11 isn’t as enticing an option as it should be, and it could stand to lose at least another $50 off the street price to make it a more serious alternative for those of you who are after a tiny and basic laptop.

On the Chromebook front, we’ve seen lots of resolutely budget-focused ones and one overkill model (Google Chromebook Pixel). The Chrome OS experience is elegant enough and getting better, but know that buying one is still very much an exercise in stepping voluntarily into a soft, Google-lined cage.

The HP Chromebook 11 (Verizon LTE) takes everything we love about the Chrome-OS family—low priced, Web-connected, extremely simple devices—and adds the freedom that only 4G LTE can provide. It's not a perfect solution, of course, but any mobility offered by LTE is a significant improvement over past Chromebooks. Pair this with great features like a bright IPS display, a unique microUSB charger, and a magnesium-reinforced design, and the HP Chromebook 11 (Verizon LTE) is the clear choice for Editors' Choice Chromebook, replacing the touch-capable Acer Chromebook C720P-2600.

HP's Chromebook 11 is lovely little laptop to consider if all you want to do is get online and you are already an everyday user of Google's online services. It looks good, feels comfortable to use, and boots up in no time. However, its performance can sometimes feel slow, and it's a very glossy product.

HP's Chromebook 11 offers a stylish and light design for those that want portability but it sacrifices its performance and features in the process. The ARM base processor is slower than Intel while not providing as long of battery life. The lack of USB 3.0, SD card slots and HDMI make expanding the devices capabilities more difficult.

So, at the end of this review, I'm left with mixed feelings. Yes, the Chromebook 11 has beautiful styling (most definitely stolen from the mid-2000s MacBook). However, performance-wise, I'm left wanting. It's nice that the system is completely fanless and remains cool, but the sluggish webpage loading sort of diminishes the system's overall value. When you start looking at comparable systems in terms of cost, there are-at least in my opinion-many other options that are much more attractive. For instance: the Dell Venue 8 Pro comes with double the storage, is full x86-compatible, and is much more capable in terms of what the operating system can do and system can do.

All in all, I like what HP did with this 11 inch version of the chromebook. I can work around the few shortcomings of this notebook. Keep the number of running tabs in check to alleviate performance and plan for the low battery life. One option would be to get one of those 2.1A, 10K+ mAh power pack battery and take advantage of the micro USB charging port. The selling point for me about this device are, the fun, good looking, lightweight and compact design, but the real deal is the IPS screen. The chromebook that I would really fall for would be laptop based on Haswell, IPS screen with 4GB of RAM, 11in or 13in for about $350ish. How does that sounds to you?

Chrome OS still has some growing up to do, or perhaps the ecosystem around it has some bedding in to do; a task as simple as printing (directly to a Google Cloud Print-enabled printer, or via a PC on the same network running a little helper app) can be complex, for example, but for most of the computing most of us spend most of our time doing, it's actually not just on a par with a traditional PC or tablet, but is in some ways even better at it. It's a quarter of the price of even the cheapest 11-inch MacBook Air and it's far more than a quarter as lovely. If Chrome OS could work for you, buy this laptop.

HP’s Chromebook 11 reinforces what’s becoming a maxim around the Computer Shopper offices: that Chromebooks are their own little universe, so they need to be reviewed by their own set of rules. HP's 11-inch Chromebook is a well-designed, elegant machine that transcends its budget pedigree. Its build, typing feel, and lines trump the rest of the low-cost Chromebook brigade.

The HP Chromebook 11 is a mixed bag, and whether it will work for any given user depends ultimately on what their needs are and where they are willing to sacrifice. If you’re a business user, there is little incentive to use the Chromebook 11, in that the performance and battery life are both lower than what you’d get from the Acer C720. In addition, the Acer offering brings to the table more options than the Chromebook 11, namely USB 3.0 rather than just USB 2.0, an HDMI video port, an SD card slot, and about three additional hours of battery life.

The Chromebook 11 looks great, is small and light and has the best screen we’ve seen on a Chrome OS device. However, build quality isn’t quite up to scratch and – more importantly – neither is performance. With several other rival Chromebooks about to be launched, it’s definitely worth waiting to see if one can combine good performance with a good screen at the right price. HP’s aims well with its latest effort, but misses the mark by a good margin.

The Chromebook remains a strange kettle of fish. Whether you'll warm to it mostly relies on whether or not you think Chrome OS is a good or bad idea. Clearly to make the most of the operating system you have to be online, although you can now use Chrome OS offline in some cases too just to quieten those naysayers. The Chromebook 11 looks good, but poor performance and cheaper yet more advanced alternatives have us struggling to recommend this over other products on the market. The Chromebook is getting better, but it's still a long way from being a worthwhile investment as far as we're concerned.

Costing a modest £230 and featuring a lightweight but solid design there is a lot to like about the HP Chromebook 11. It has a surprisingly bright and vibrant screen, reasonable port offering and the latest version of Google's Chrome OS operating system. And with its lightweight design, it's an ideal option for firms looking to invest in pooled laptops for business travel. However by running on a Samsung Exynos rather than an Intel Haswell chipset, the Chromebook 11 boasts a shorter battery life than a number of other recently announced, similarly priced Chromebooks.

The HP Chromebook 11 isn't perfect, with all of the limitations of any other Chrome OS device (though those limitations are likely fewer than you might imagine). The inexpensive laptop does, however, manage to bring some new and improved elements to the inexpensive Chromebook category, boasting a bright IPS display, a unique micro USB charger, and a magnesium-reinforced design. It's definitely a good value, but it doesn't replace the Editors' Choice Acer C7, which offers a larger port selection and larger local storage for those not yet fully migrated to the cloud.

Even though the HP Chromebook 11 is completely different from the high-end Pixel, it gets the same rating because it achieves the same mission. It advances Google's Chrome OS platform not with what it does, but how it does it. It exudes style and even a bit of unapologetic Chromebook pride. HP says the Chromebook 11 will ship on October 16. I expect that the white ones will sell better, and a canny retailer will bundle a microfiber cleaning cloth with each one.

Its screen and design make it very aesthetically pleasing, and it's certainly the best iteration of the Chromebook yet, making the Pixel look more and more like a grand folly. Overall, we really took to the Chromebook 11, which could well prove to be the first Chromebook that tempts us away from our catwalk dwelling ultrabooks to try something a bit different, honest and (whisper it) maybe even a bit sexy. But it has to be remembered that at this price, Chromebooks are almost certainly going to be about compromises for the foreseeable future, whether that's wringing the most out of the comparatively limited Chrome OS, plugging it in more often, or putting up with less screen estate and processing horsepower. It'll be available from PC World in the UK and Amazon (among other retailers) in the US from November.

Writing the pros and cons for a Chromebook review is a tricky task. Aside from the flaky touchpad, the biggest disadvantages -- only 16GB of SSD storage, an operating system largely limited to Google's own ecosystem -- are part of what makes a Chromebook a Chromebook. And while Google will tell you that this machine is "for everyone," it's clearly not.

HP’s take on the Chromebook is a familiar one, especially if you’ve seen the shiny not-quite-MacBook that was the Google Chromebook, because HP has built both. As a result of that last fact, the systems are nearly identical, with the same CPU, memory, storage inside, wireless technologies, and charging mechanism, with the only difference being a screen. But this screen is far less impressive than the one HP shipped with the original Google Chromebook, and so if we had to choose, we’d say the Google Chromebook beats this one without questions, and they even run for the same price.

The best word to describe the HP Chromebook 11 G4 is "adequate." If you need to do some light browsing, document editing and video streaming, this machine can handle it. It has a good keyboard and trackpad combo and loud speakers but falls behind competing Chromebooks with a screen that doesn't get particularly bright, a webcam that takes dark images and below-average battery life.

HP's corporate and education Chromebook model takes much of the same design elements as their previous consumer model but improves on it somewhat. Battery life and port selection have both improved and the display is certainly better than most. The problem is that this is larger and heavier than most 11-inch Chromebooks but costs slightly more. The HP Chromebook 11A-NB0013DX is a bestselling 2020 Chromebook laptop that received positive reviews for its slick and lightweight design and affordable price, a comfortable keyboard, its price as the cheapest new Chromebook on the market at the time of writing. The pandemic has forced schools to go digital, and this means kids require a big enough display to focus and do minor tasks. So, is this Chromebook worth the asking price? 100% it is! With a more-sturdy build than most in this price range, a reasonable keyboard/trackpad, and long battery life, you have the makings of a very, very solid Chromebook package. If you are at all interested in this one, that tells me that overall value is what you are after, and I really think the HP Chromebook 11a delivers in that regard. Whether it acts as a secondary device around the house or a decent performer for the kids, the HP 11a deserves your attention. And after some of HP’s earlier attempts at cheap Chromebooks, I’m very glad to say that is the case this time around.

A lot of credit here goes to HP for giving Chromebooks and Chrome OS an opportunity to shine. And shine it does. At Rs 21,999, the Chromebook 11a is a steal in terms of value and what it offers. The search for a budget laptop can genuinely end if more brands start making Chromebooks, which surprisingly they haven’t. Windows, of course, remains a far more refined OS but Google Chrome OS looks like it is here to stay. For those who are looking for a laptop for ‘basic’ needs or online classes and meetings, the HP Chromebook 11a is the device to go for. We would say that for Android users there’s an added advantage but the truth is that literally anyone can buy this laptop and find it easy to use for all kinds of tasks. Budget Windows laptop better worry as this is a computing device to watch out for.
